    We Need To Apologise

    We Need To Apologise

A Victorian woman's heartbreaking plea to politicians in response to a ban on IVF has gone viral. What does it tell us about our collective frustration, and is there ever really such a thing as 'elective' surgery?

We need to talk about one of the characters in And Just Like That to whom some feel a grave injustice has been done.

And, there are some things we’d like to apologise for already even though we’re only halfway through January.

    The Djok Block

    The Djok Block

We're back! It's our first official show of 2022 and we missed you. Have you had Covid? Holly has, and she needs to talk about brain fog and guilt.

Plus, we asked Outlouders what we should talk about today. In even numbers, they asked us to please definitely talk about this, and please definitely don’t, but of course, we couldn’t not, the story that has swallowed much of the Summer news cycle, that of a particular Number One tennis player, Novak Djokovic

And, we are going to talk about the things that have brought us joy over the past weeks, including some out there celebrity news because we all needed some of that…

What did it take to make a tabloid mag in the It Girl era? You know, the days when Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Nicole Richie or Lindsay Lohan were falling out of cars, in and out of rehab and a ruthless paparazzi pack was documenting all of it? It’s the era that, through a 2021 lens, might be the most problematic of them all, but back then, what was it like to work in the magazines that knew the more outrageous the antics, the higher the sale?

On this episode of Extraordinary Stories: Magazine Queens, Emma Gillespie speaks to Australia’s weekly magazine Queen Louisa Hatfield and Mamamia’s own, former OK! Deputy Editor Holly Wainwright, about the Britney years.

    THE END BITS:

BONUS: 3. Magazine Queens: When Supermodels Turned Deadly

Episode three of Extraordinary Stories - Magazine Queens - was originally released to MPlus subscribers. Subscribers get early access to Extraordinary Stories, and unlimited access to all Mamamia content. To subscribe head to mamamia.com.au/mplus

The 1990s were the era of the supermodels, the waifs, and a trend so deadly it came with a health warning: heroin chic. Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Marie Claire brought luxury to the local newsagent and gave Australian women a taste of the runways of Paris and Milan. A handful of women known by their first names only were on every cover: Naomi, Cindy, Linda, Elle… until the waifs came along and knocked them off.

On this episode of Extraordinary Stories: Magazine Queens, Emma Gillespie speaks to former Vogue Editor Kirstie Clements about what it was like working in a world that would fly you to Paris for a manicure and also refuse to make clothes that could fit grown-up women. And Paula Joye tells us about what it was like working with the supermodels of the 90s... And yes, she saw them all naked.

    THE END BITS:

Episode two of Extraordinary Stories - Magazine Queens - was originally released to MPlus subscribers. Subscribers get early access to Extraordinary Stories, and unlimited access to all Mamamia content. To subscribe head to mamamia.com.au/mplus

The most infamous battle in Australian magazine history happened against the backdrop of an imploding royal marriage and an obsession with a tortured princess. And the most infamous editor in weekly magazines, Nene King, had exactly the killer instinct to capitalise on it. Welcome to the Diana Wars, when two esteemed editors went head to head in a circulation battle for the eyes and attention of millions of Australian women - whatever the cost.

In episode two of Extraordinary Stories: Magazine Queens, Nene King, Angela Mollard and Louisa Hatfield talk to Emma Gillespie about an era of tabloid excess, and how it all came crashing down after a midnight high-speed chase through a Parisian tunnel.

Thought this would be dross how wrong I was!!

Love this Podcast. Gave it a whirl on a long drive and thought I would hate it. Much to my surprise I really enjoyed the banter and the different points of view on hot topics.
Now Holly, Mia and Jessie are my friends in my ears. Have missed them over the Xmas break and can’t wait for the new eps.

One of my faves

I look forward to this drop every day it is released each week. Holly, Mia and Jessie are clever, balanced, insightful, curious, bold and funny. I love being kept up to date on what is going on in the world by them. Swimming deep in motherhood with little kids, this podcast keeps me informed enough to have conversations about important things in the world whilst I’m braindead and sleep deprived.

Mean Girls Vibe with no objectivity.

I’m an Australian expat journalist and this reminds me of what Aussie Karen’s are like with a pretentious progressive slant . It’s no wonder you can see the creator stole her whole media empire from Ariana Huffington .. it’s a family business with no objectivity- It’s a cliquey atmosphere and it shows . 😂😉
