Mr Cruel 1 - Serial Abductor and Probable Child Murderer - Overview of Case

Mr Cruel is the moniker for a serial child abductor, and most probably murderer, who terrorised Melbourne in the late 80s and early 90s and has never been caught for his crimes. In this first post, I start with an overview of the case and try to clear up some confusion about which crimes were actually attributed to Mr Cruel.

The Unresolved Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

The Unresolved Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

On 21st of October, 1978, 20 year old Frederick Valentich is flying a Cessna 182L light aeroplane from Moorabbin Airport to King Island. Not long after commencing the over water section of the flight, between Cape Otway and King Island, Valentich reports to the air traffic controller seeing a craft with 4 bright lights passing over his plane. The unusual craft returns and Valentich reports it behaving strangely by playing some sort of game with him, and travelling at such high speeds he could not identify how fast. Valentich reports that the craft is a long shape and has green lights. The conversation lasts 6 minutes before he declares that the object is not an aircraft. Suddenly all radio contact with Valentich's aircraft is lost and he and his cessna disappear never to be heard from again. Despite a massive rescue operation, no evidence is found that would suggest what happened to Valentich or his plane.

    The Cranbourne Meteorite

    The Cranbourne Meteorite

In the late 1700s an iron meteor the size of a truck broke up and fell over Bunurong country, about 40km south east of the modern city of Melbourne. The event would have been spectacular visually and accompanied by sonic booms and a shock wave. It resulted in a number of large iron meteorites falling in what is now the Cranbourne area.

Great Historical Podcast

It’s a shame I didn’t find this podcast earlier as it seems to have ended a few years ago. Great content and no annoying interruptions or distractions. I like the minimalist approach of just talking which is rare in podcasts today.

Marvellous Melbourne

I had to move from Melbourne a few years ago and miss it terribly, so it’s wonderful to hear tales from this beautiful city which is steeped in history. Please continue to podcast on Melbourne and surrounding areas... there is still so much to uncover

The Disappearance of Frederick Valentich

This podcast brought back a hazily remembered story of some 42 years ago. One of those stories at went unsolved at the time and the story in itself disappeared out of view as stories in the media often do when supplanted by other big stories of the day. The joy of this podcast was was there there was a careful blending of sub stories connected to the main account and indeed quite an exercise to weave those complex sub stories together.

Frederick Valentich's own life story prior to the final events leading to his disappearance was in itself quite fascinating as a human interest story the revelling of that story was interesting enough in itself.

The podcast captured some of the 'theories of the day' and I was able to recall some of that thinking.

Added to this was the narration of these events the delivery is; clear, concise and diction was such that it was a pleasure to sit and listen to such a story with such complexities attached. A 'great listen' in a true story telling manner.
