Bright lights, centre court, multimillion dollar contracts and adoring fans. That’s what most of us imagine when we think of the world of professional athletes. But what is the story behind the images? What does the road to stardom look like? What does it take to get there? Who better to answer these questions and many more, than the moms who were there every step of the way.“Court-Side Moms” is the first of its kind to focus solely on the experiences of professional basketball player’s mothers, giving us a new perspective on the lives of some of our favorite athletes. We explore the thoughts, feelings and experiences of those moms who have watched their children join the elite world of pro sports. The joys, the challenges, the heart aches, the big and small moments that transformed their lives and those of their children. No one understands this better than Wendy Sparks, the mother of Toronto Raptors Center, Khem Birch and the host of Court-side Moms. Wendy will sit down with other basketball moms to hear their stories, creating the first platform for moms to kick back and chat about their kids, and to discuss the reality of raising high performance athletes.

    Talen Horton-Tucker's mom, Shirley Horton

    Talen Horton-Tucker's mom, Shirley Horton

Wendy welcomes Laker Mom, Shirley Horton to the show to hear all about the talents and the treasures of being Talen Horton-Tucker. Starting from a strong family with fierce family values, Shirley saw his talent and love for basketball really bloom from the time he was a toddler. As an HBCU Alumni, Shirley made sure Talen always knew the importance of education, and how sacrificing one for the other was never going to be an option. “Give it to God, write it down, but you have to work on it too.” This was a philosophy instilled in Talen from a very young age.

An opinionated, and loving parent - Shirley never forgets that she is Talen's mom first and he is always her first priority. Shirley makes a point that a lot of mom’s struggle with, and a lot of children don’t always appreciate, but she will be a mom forever, it doesn’t matter if her child is grown, it is still her responsibility to be there and to be a mentor, a champion and a sounding board for her child.

Knowing the role has, and will continue to, change as Talen goes through different stages in his career and life, means her role as mom needs to change and look different, but doesn’t mean forgetting her responsibility.

Lots of great lessons to be learned, and information for our sports moms out there, make sure you tune in to this inspiring and informative episode.

    Malachi Flynn's mom, Kristi Flynn

    Malachi Flynn's mom, Kristi Flynn

Kristi and Wendy met at this year’s NBA Summer League. Wendy was the first Raptor mom Kristi met; here we are today with a live episode at the Toronto Raptors OVO Athletic Centre. Our first live recording since January 2020.
Since birth Malachi has always been front and centre in a basketball court, sitting on his mom’s lap as a child; whether his dad was coaching a game or his siblings were lacing them up.
They discuss the college recruiting process that led Malachi to Washington State and how much that meant for him and his family. Why he ultimately transferred to San Diego State and how the NBA became a realistic goal for Malachi.
We take a stroll down memory lane, sharing what the draft process was like during a pandemic and her thoughts on being drafted by an NBA team in an entirely new country. Kristi relives the special moment they got the call that he was drafted and then watched it live on TV. All the hard work and time had paid off.
Malachi’s first season with the team down in Tampa and the transition to Toronto for the Raptors return home. Kristi is a proud mom and still can’t get used to seeing her son play in the NBA – it is just an incredible feeling.

A thoughtful important podcast!

Wendy is so thoughtful and kind in her interviewing. I’m so glad a podcast like this exists, especially since it’s hosted by one of my favourite raptors moms! Such a treat!

There is without a doubt a need for more women’s voices in basketball, in sports in general. These moms contributions to their children, especially in elite level sports is massive: long drives, unconditional support and so much more. It’s so beautiful to be able to understand a player and their life better through their mother with this special podcast. Its always important to appreciate all the moms out there and their undying love and contribution to their children and who they grow up to be.

Great perspective

This is the type of podcast that gives you a point of view that just isn’t available at the moment. Terrific insights at the very least. Bravo!

Perfect idea!

This podcast has shown to be the only podcast focusing on NBA/WNBA mothers. Very cool concept!!
