Florence Black: Childhood Trauma, Motherhood, Reclaiming Your Identity, & Building A Business

In this episode, Florence shares what it felt like to lose her mom to cancer at seventeen and navigate a father's serious illness as a young girl — and how that early trauma planted the roots of anxiety, people-pleasing, and depression on her young. She opens up about a fast and furious relationship she was in at 21 where she got engaged, pregnant, and what it actually takes to leave a toxic relationship. We go deep into single motherhood during COVID, and the isolation of raising a baby alone. She shares her experience with hyperemesis, what birth taught her about her body for the first time, and how becoming a mother transformed her relationship with herself. Her experience with her kids is honestly healing something in Marnie. In the final stretch, Flo walks us through building One for Blue — her children's clothing brand — from sewing at night after her son went to sleep, and what entrepreneurship as a mom actually looks like. She closes with what it means to finally experience safe love, starting a beautiful modern family, and a life that feels like her own. This episode is for women of all ages and stages of life. Marcus Paladino: Learning to Feel Through Anxiety, Loss, Love & Becoming Yourself

In this deeply moving episode, Marnie sits down with Marcus Paladino, Tofino-based surf photographer to talk about all things family, anxiety, identity, love, loss, and learning how to feel the fear and do it anyway. Marcus opens up about growing up in a tense household, being bullied, and carrying shame into adulthood. He shares the moment anxiety first showed up in his life, how therapy and meditation helped him reconnect with himself, and what it took to accept who he is beneath everything he was carrying. The conversation flows through Marcus’s creative journey — from photo school and financial fear to going all in on surf photography and finding a sense of belonging in Tofino. Marcus vulnerably reflects on falling in love with his best friend, getting engaged, experiencing heartbreak, and rebuilding his identity without losing himself. In the second half of the episode, Marcus speaks candidly about caring for his mom through cancer, the intimacy of caregiving, the reality of grief, and the moments that stay with you forever — including the quiet ritual of leaving the door open. This episode closes with a powerful discussion on men’s mental health, community, asking for help, how to navigate the holidays, and what it really means to show up for yourself even when it’s hard. The Golden Hammock: Breaking the Stigma Around Mental Illness (Live Show)

What happens when a room full of people decide to drop the mask and talk about the things we usually keep to ourselves? In this special Giddy Up Live Show partnered with WIRTH Hats, we explore the stories we often carry quietly—severe mental illness, debilitating anxiety, isolation, and the cost of pretending we’re "fine." We are joined by Psychotherapist Hiroko Demichelis, who breaks down the reality of loving someone with schizophrenia and introduces the "Golden Hammock"—a powerful framework for moving care from the individual to the community. We also hear the incredible story of Connor McCracken, who went from paralyzing social anxiety and isolation to walking 1,000km on the Camino de Santiago to document the universal language of mental health. This wasn't just a podcast recording; it was a night of breaking stigmas, raising $1,300 for the WIRTH Foundation, and proving that we don’t have to do this alone. In this episode, we cover: The "Golden Hammock": Why healing severe mental illness requires a community, not just a family.Schizophrenia & Stigma: How to navigate the "crunchy" realities of psychosis and finding meaning in the chaos.Men’s Mental Health: Why men mask their pain, the dangers of isolation, and how a single "check-in" from a friend saved Connor’s life.Project Pilgrim: How exposure therapy and a 1,000km hike helped cure social anxiety. The Call to Action: Why we need to stop waiting for tragedy to check in on our homies. Key Takeaways: Silence is a cage: Mental illness thrives in isolation; talking about it is the first step to freedom.Recovery isn't linear: Healing is messy, and that is okay. The power of "The Check-In": A simple conversation can be the permission someone needs to seek help.Community is the cure: We are not meant to carry the weight of mental illness alone.Movement is medicine: How mindfulness and exercise (like hiking) can interrupt negative spirals.
