When Tony Hathaway was arrested outside a Seattle bank in February 2014, it brought an end to one of the most prolific bank robbery streaks in American history. Hathaway robbed 30 banks in a single year, all within a 30-mile radius of his suburban home. But that’s not the most surprising part of this story. Before Hathaway was a masterful bank robber—a shape-shifting professional who confounded multiple police departments and the FBI—he was a top design engineer at Boeing, one of America’s most important companies. Hathaway traveled the world in business class, working on the 747, while hiding a gigantic secret: an OxyContin addiction that ultimately unraveled his life. Based on three years of conversations between Hathaway and journalist Josh Dean, Hooked is a different kind of crime story that takes listeners on an exceptional and very personal tour of America’s opioid epidemic.

Intelligent & Honest
A personal and honest narrative about the opioid crisis. Purdue pharmaceuticals should be held to account.
Heartbreaking, Honest and Unforgettable
Tony’s story sheds a light on the tragic consequences of a pharmaceutical industry that cares more about profit than healing. Tony and Connor were so incredibly honest and brave to tell their truth and share it with the world. They own their crimes but one cannot listen to this story and not walk away furious that once again a huge corporation is responsible for the death of countless people yet barely faces the consequences of their actions. It’s an unconscionable tale of corporate greed committing mass murder of citizens and the humans behind it shielded from faces of their crimes. These people should be tried for every death they caused! Thank you to Tony and Connor for the heartbreaking and honest truth everyone should hear.
Honesty makes this story relevant
Such a traumatic and sad reality. Very well produced and captured the struggle that touches so many people.
I was struck by the episode where you mentioned you were surprised you hadn’t noticed Tony was drinking. I heard the change in tone of his voice immediately and it brought up some very real and painful memories. I used to call this “losing his tongue” when someone close to me was drinking and started slurring his words. Your honesty in telling your reaction to the situation was well communicated. Thanks for your commitment to this podcast.
