Great series and as a physician in mental health, I always find Laura’s content to be evidence-based, heartfelt and accurate (I have been listening since she started this prior to leaving RCP. I do want to add that she is not a psychologist as she states in the intro of her latest episodes. However she does have an MSc in legal and forensic psychology. I’m not sure why she feels pressure to exaggerate her status, but at least, in Canada, you cannot call yourself a psychologist without having a PhD. As someone who has done a PhD in a clinical field and has an MD in psychiatry, I can say that there is a difference. This has dropped my rating to 4 stars …
Also, I wanted to emphasize that rapper “Fifty Cent” had also been accused of violence against women, including one of his previous wives who pressed charges. I think Laura should speak more here perhaps about how the Sean Combs documentary was well done, BUT Fifty Cent has not exactly been a “hero” to women, and the documentary was likely more driven by his longstanding feud with Sean Combs. I’m not negating that the documentary was good., but prior allegations against Curtis Jackson’s (AKA. ‘Fifty Cent) should be mentioned to give listeners a balanced perspective.
In response to the criticism surround Laura about not speaking of victims of male violence - it’s correct that her sole focus is largely on cis-females in abusive or coercively controlling relationships. This is what is important to her for advocacy.
However she is able to appreciate nuance. This is evident in her coverage of the Menendez Brothers, her recent episode on Ghislane Maxwell, and her criticism of “influencer tradwives” that they are largely independent in making they make significant money off of selling a false lifestyle. She is not ignorant of the fact that some women do perpetrate violence on others, but chooses to focus her content on the more common patterns of IPV, stalking, coercive control and supporting legislation surrounding this.
It is an excellent podcast and I look forward to the weekly episode drops. I see why she left RCP to dedicate herself to this more fully. Congrats on a well done and very successful podcast!
