Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth Interview with Legendary Actor, Singer & Dancer, Ben Vereen About Harvey's guest: Today’s special guest, Ben Vereen, is an immensely popular and beloved, multi-award winning actor, dancer, and singer, who first became a superstar because of his performances in the original Broadway productions of “Jesus Christ Superstar”, for which he received a Tony Award nomination and a Theatre World Award, and “Pippin”, for which he won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for Best Actor in a Musical. He’s also appeared on Broadway in “Hair”, “Grind”, “Jelly’s Last Jam”, “Fosse”, “I’m not Rappaport” and “Wicked”, in which he played the Wizard of Oz. On the big screen, you’ve seen him in great movies like “Sweet Charity”, “All That Jazz”, “Why Do Fools Fall in Love”, “Idlewild”, “Tapioca”, “Time Out of Mind”, and of course, “Funny Lady”, for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination. On television, he’s been nominated for 3 Emmy Awards. The first was for his brilliant portrayal of “Chicken George” in the groundbreaking miniseries, “Roots”, for which he also won a Television Critics Circle Award and a TV Land Award. His second Emmy nomination was for his wonderful medley from “Jesus Christ Superstar” in “The Bell Telephone Jubilee”. And he received a 3rd Emmy nomination for his portrayal of “Gene Randall” in “Intruders”. He’s also appeared in many classic TV shows including “Webster”, “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air”, “The Nanny”, “Touched by an Angel”, “Oz”, “How I Met Your Mother”, “NCIS”, “B Positive” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, for which he won a Prism Award for Best Performance in a Drama Series. And he got a second Golden Globe Award nomination for his terrific performance as “Roscoe Haines” in “Ellis Island”. And besides his iconic performance in “Roots”, he also co-starred in many other great TV movies and miniseries including “Mary’s Incredible Dream”, “Lewey Armstrong – Chicago Style”, “The Jesse Owens Story”, “A.D.”, “The Kid Who Loved Christmas”, “Accidental Friendship” and “Pippin: His Life and Times”, for which he was nominated for a Cable Ace Award. Most recently, he got rave reviews for his performance as “Isham Worthy” in the gripping and poignant miniseries, “The Gray House”. And when he’s not performing, our guest is highly devoted to public service. He’s an active member of Americans for the Arts, and he has served on the boards of Ballet Florida, the American Red Cross, and the American Diabetes Association.
