234: Destroying Amarna / Splitting Heirs

Sometime in Ramesses II's reign, royal artisans dismantled the city of Akhet-Aten (Amarna). Carefully, methodically, they removed the talatat blocks and carted them away to the nearby town Hemenu (Hermopolis) for reuse in a temple. This demolition of the Horizon of Aten remains a matter of debate among scholars: why now, and what motivated it? Meanwhile, Ramesses II has a problem. His sons keep dying. Between regnal years 25--55, at least twelve princes "passed to the west." We meet the designated heirs (and the spares), and see who finally got the top job... An Amazing trove of Knowledge

As I approach episode 100, I just realized I haven’t given this podcast a review. What I appreciate about this podcast is that Dominic is very good at actually bringing you into Ancient Egypt. He expands on events, relays what it would feel like to be there to witness the events, and pulls you back in time with him. This is very hard to do. Other podcasts may feel dry but this podcast makes the dead civilization feel alive again. The crumpled statues and tombs are now back in their former glory for you to observe and appreciate. The daily rituals, and the sights and sounds of ancient Egypt are there for you to enjoy again. As I approach episodes 100+, I wonder where the story is now and when I will finally be amongst those who are forced to wait for the next episode! I’m not looking forward to it.
