I’m a white, 77 yr old retired Ontario teacher. I’ve been aware of residential schools and the Sixties Scoop since 1970. I learned both while living and working in NW Ontario. When I returned to southern Ontario, I realized that none of my colleagues, save one teacher from close to Thunder Bay, knew what I was talking about. No one wanted to believe it. Your handling of this story, your love and kindness and your care to show how incredibly resilient and happy victims had been and have continued to be is such a testament of the strength of Indigenous hearts and culture. I don’t have enough words to properly describe the kindness, empathy, and investigative prowess it would’ve taken to report on these important and devastating stories involving Indigenous women - all of which form part of Canada’s sad, bizarre history. As a white woman who also grew up in SK not knowing these stories until inexcusably much later in life, I am in awe of the courage and clarity that was necessary to report them.
