History as it should be

I am so sorry Now and Then has come to an end, for myself and for the American voters who could use this dose of common sense that draws a clear line from the past to the present. People need to understand the past befire the can understanding the trajectory. Good fortunes in your future activies, Heather and Joanne.

Missed the survey but wanted to say that you are doing everything right. Always fascinating, frequently riveting. Excellent illustration of why the study of the past is essential to an understanding of our present. Now and Then is everything a podcast should be: informative, thought-provoking, and easy to listen to. I enjoy how much these two skilled and talented professors enjoy researching and sharing relevant events from American history to provide context for today’s news. History does not have to be exclusively grim and solemn. Cognitive dissonance can have its amusing side. The opportunity to share laughter is always a welcome bonus.

Now and Then

I listen to this podcast every week. Heather and Joanne are the best historians. Clear, helpful analysis. And the podcast for July 11, 2023 gives you a moment of actual summer
“ holiday” relief. Thank you to these two!

Canada-US

Great show, discussion of the history. English Canada, basically in what is now Ontario, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick was settled by English speaking “Loyalists” who were actually refugees from the American Revolution (which is the British-Canadian nomenclature, not the American “War Of Independence”, a difference which reveals and real difference in perspective of the fateful period from 1775-83 that transformed the political character of North America. In fact, the official motto of the Province of Ontario is in Latin and translates in English as
“Loyal She Began, Loyal She Remains” and that, of course, alludes to our loyalty to the British Crown
which continues officially in Canada, whatever current Canadian sentiments might be toward the British/Canadian monarchy. It has been part of what has enabled a unique Canadian perspective on the United States and its people. Friends, longtime allies, neighbours and even to some extent “family” (as even George Bush stated after 9/11), but always distinct and apart in innumerable ways. But we stand together—still—on the values of classical liberal democracy and the Western alliance against autocracy (see Ukraine) but it has increasingly become a concern about the future here in Canada and throughout Western democracies. ✌️ 🍁 🇺🇸 🇺🇦 🌎 🙏🏻
