Cannot Recommend Enough
Found this podcast surfing the internet nostalgic for Johnny Carson; a talk show host who was always more interested in his guests and entertaining his audience than himself and a time when this felt like more the norm than it does today. Found The Carson Podcast and it not only scratched my TV nostalgia itch, made my appreciation for Johnny Carson grow but introduced me to the the talents of Mark Malkoff who does the same hour after hour speaking to producers, members of The Tonight Show crew, frequent guests, guest-hosts, Carson’s comedy writers, Tonight Show band members, just about everybody (still hoping he gets Letterman and Leno- both owe it to this archive) who ever had anything to do with the history making, never to be seen again show business, 30 year, perfect storm. Malkoff’s curiosity, appreciation and authentic interest with every guest makes the hour fly by and is excellent light company any time of day. If you loved Johnny Carson and grew up appreciating the Art of the Talk Show you must listen to The Carson Podcast.
History and Entertainment
All of us should love one thing as much as Mark Malkoff loves Johnny Carson and the Tonight Show in his time as host. There's seemingly nothing Mark doesn't know about the show and yet in every episode of his podcast he's digging up new stories about the relationships between Carson and his celebrity guests and staffers, from the producers right down to the executive assistants. Mark casts light not just on the man in the spotlight but also the making of the show that was to this day an unmatched television institution. Five stars and abundant thanks to Mark whose work is fascinating insight and important history.
The Carson Podcast Experience
This is an exceptionally well researched and presented podcast. One thing I noted is that Mark and I are the same age - 42 years old. I have long thought that I may have been one of the few, or only, my age who delved into everything “Carson”. The fact that someone my age has been able to research and access first hand sources to produce this is amazing. The guests who have appeared are remarkable in their own rights let alone their connections to Carson. Each episode is fantastic. As the episode list grows, it is interesting to hear “the other side” of some stories from earlier episodes. Darn it if that doesn’t make me go back and listen to a previous episode again. I’m not certain what my praise means to you, Mark, and the podcast community. So, don’t take my word for it. Listen for yourself. :)
