#97 Let’s talk everything to do asphalt and asphalt sealing and more with Leo Ing Asphalt Services

Leo sings an original rap for us and he doesn’t approve of drinking and fishing for the record. Before we get right into asphalt and trust us, that one word will be expressed a number of times on this show, we get briefly talking about millennials and what they are worth, a constant battle of wage vs worth. Bottom line everyone must always deliver on their worth and the moment any tradesperson decides to slow down, not care, make mistakes, because these are choices they made, and when the GC speaks up and questions to wage vs worth don’t be surprised if you are not asked back on site. Now on with our show about ASPHALT SEALING. Leo has established a well-respected sealing business where he educates clients on why he is better and what he does to be better. Leo is Chinese but recently found out that his family tree has some native Canadian so now he considers himself Chindian. What sets Leo apart? He doesn’t spray driveways; he brushes the product onto the surface passing a 4-foot-wide brush over the same spot 4-5 times working his way down the drive. The actual sealer used is critical, there is a difference between sealers and Leo educates us on latex vs oil sealers and he has amazing insight regarding driveway failures. From crack repairs to actual real talk about when it is time to repave because Leo will not steer any homeowner wrong. Find Leo at www.ingservices.net sales@ingservices.net and 416 892-4526 Thank you so much Leo for being on the show. Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end and now the brand new and very well received Ten Questions of Construction.Thank you to Mark from @skyluxeroofing for letting us record the show in his breakroom and welcome him and his guys always walking through the recording. We open with the good old boys and what an opener to out show, one of the best ones yet, thanks Jeff for setting the bar. The Loft Doors story actually began with a fireplace mantle that led to a pergola for a client and that very first trip to a dilapidated barn, take as much of the board you want, the owner said to Jeff. Jeff and his creative team considers his pieces as “functional art”. This podcast was an overload of visually stunning pieces in the showroom and a free for all creative session talking about all kinds of custom home décor items. Listen to this amazing show and learn so much about building a brand, the ups and downs, and diving into a market that Jeff had a huge hand in building. Thank you so much Jeff for joining us and sharing so many great stories behind Loft Doors.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end and lastly we have the ten questions of construction.Thank You so much Jeff for joining the show, all the amazing pieces of art, doors, so many doors and more and lots of insight into the construction, design and clients. #95 Maple Leaf Construction Demolition Waterproofing Underpinning and Termite

Chris comes from the Hospitality sector and Jason was always in construction and they thought let’s partner and take on the construction world. Wasn’t an easy task. It all began with a bin business, that led into more reno work, then it was too much to handle without any proper organization so Chris and Jason sat down during the early Covid days and came up with this Business and Employee Guideline Plan they developed and that is when their business actually became a proper business. We begin chatting about termite issues and how termites love nesting inside spray foam, they will build a colony twice as fast in foam over wood. But we get right back into running the business and learning what is and isn’t working from the way the employees arrive on site to deliverables. One of their key guidelines, set hours, you begin and end at a certain time, that way every employee can have a personal life. What a crazy idea that is.The guidelines talk about personal hygiene, clothing and work uniform – no track pants Carlito, tool care and use, driving habits and company vehicle usage, smoking, language on site, manners and more. This guideline was developed to build a better team and eventually a better brand. This podcast has been a great resource for so many trades to reach out to people that have been on the show and even Maple Leaf has reached out to Jorge from DGR to talk shop. We love that our little podcast is adding to the construction industry.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Chris and Jason for joining the show, sharing all of that information about your beginnigns and where Maple Leaf Construction is heading and changign the industry. #94 Turn Key Shoring with Matt and we are talking building a better kind of shoring company

#94 Turn Key Shoring with Matt and we are talking building a better kind of shoring company

We get right out of The Construction Life gate with food that Matt brought us from Speducci, pizzas, spiedini and more, what a pure gem of a gentleman. Matt began his construction career like most, sweeping floors in sub division and once he saw other trades digging holes for the next build he was hooked and wanted to know everything about excavation. The official term that Matt performs is Engineered Earth Retention Shoring. We get chatting about his very first machine and what that cost him to rent per week and then quoting his first job right from the cab of that excavator. Espresso machines come up of course and we get right into the good, the bad and the Chinese machines that are ruining the true espresso nature of the coffee. That chat brings us right back to shoring machinery and back to the construction site. The connection of Chinese tooling vs Italian and American is what determines how successful your business will be. 1/3 operator, 1/3 machine and 1/3 tooling is what makes his business successful and Matt has done his R&D to streamline a very successful business. That tooling talk brings us right into his loyalty to tools and brands and which tools are best for his business and why. Matt talks about his online network of shoring, concrete, machinery connections from Russia, Germany, Italy and more, where he is always networking with them and looking to build his business better by way of technique and tools. We even get into how Covid effected his business, how many guys stayed at home, how many guys came back and how he adjusted everything to survive. Where is Turnkey heading Matt? He’s getting into drilling for geothermal and being a part of geofields. Matt has the machinery and manpower to drill and dig so why not expand a successful business. He is also getting into dewatering on job sites, where you basically drill a hole to let the water table rise up to grade and escape from the excavated area. Matt has built a successful business based on quality and safety first followed by profit, it’s a TrunKey culture that he has built and everyone associated with his brand has that common goal. Thank you so much Matt for being on the show. Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Matt for joining the show, all the amazing food and sharing so much great insight about your construction shoring business and all of the amazing projects you have had a chance to be a part of from the very beginning. #93 We have Brendan Goulding and a different take on the apprentice route

#93 We have Brendan Goulding and a different take on the apprentice route

We begin with a specific shout out to David from @blucarpentry and how he gets a good laugh at Manny and Carlito having a hard time converting imperial to metric. Enjoy.Brendan gets right into his pretty sweet IG handle @redsealcarpenter and his matching license plate that has been stolen before. Brendan wrote his test, achieved higher than 70% and that grade got him into his first year of apprentice and with that got a secure job with an established builder. Right of the construction gate and he’s making great moves. We get right into Journeymen wages across the country, the national average and local average and what the work day is like or what it should be like.Brendan makes the statement that all Carpenters should be licensed just like Plumbers, HVAC, Electricians and we discuss would it be better industry if that was the case? Will the cost of you running your business and the cost of your service you provide, will it increase? Brendan brings up a great point, how much do you value your worth? We have some fun with what type of tool brand is Brendan and that leads us into job site etiquette and supplying or not supplying tools to apprentices. Then we touch upon females in trades and how they get a higher incentive from the government to get a career in trades. As an apprentice you have to go into construction and construction education with an open mind, check the ego at the door, you are there to learn, to watch and to listen. 1, 2, 3, if you can’t retain the task and it takes you more than 3 attempts and you are continuously wasting material, then you are gone and should consider another career. Farmers make great contractors and Brendan has farming in his family history.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and Green Book Talk with Carlito at the near end.Thank You so much Brandan for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about your construction path and all of the amazing projects you have had a chance to be a part of. #92 Upwardor Garage Doors – Let’s talk everything to do with garage doors

We are talking with Tony Anderson from Upwardor, one “o” should have been two “o”’s but he never named it, he just bought it. We have a lot to talk about when it comes to garages. We get into colors, styles, construction of the doors, all of those little details that make a garage door last a very long time. People don’t realize that a single car garage door is 56 sq ft of surface area and on your front façade of your home and more attention to detail and care should really be put into the selection of your garage door. We even discuss the R16 in a 1 ¾” thick door, it’s a trade secret and they know how to make that happen. We discuss fast opening air doors with uses for ambulance and fire hall applications, we get right into jack shaft or direct shaft openers and the benefits and even prom night is brought up. Let’s get into the world of installation and what to look for when hiring a professional and how the future garage door will be integrated into your smart home systems. A garage door should never be an after thought, homeowners really should spend more time on a garage door.Don’t forget we have Construction History from Manny at the beginning of the show, Building Code Talk with Manny at the midpoint and lastly the 10 questions of construction.Thank You so much Tony for joining the show and sharing so much great insight about your garage doors and all of the amazing products you have. Funny & Transparent

The Construction Life is a great podcast to listen to, to learn and laugh!

I was lucky to be a guest on this podcast, and I found the tone to be honesty- they truly care about giving their listeners unbiased, hard facts.

Good debates, smooth flow of conversation, and neat segments keep listeners engaged for the duration of each episode.

The Construction Life Podcast

For a very long time the construction industry - especially the residential sector - has been misunderstood, mistrusted and had really limited representation in the general public. The only exposure most home owners have is limited to entertaining episodes on TV, where months-long projects often appear to be completed over a long weekend or, for entertainment value, the drama is cranked to ten. In this podcast, once you see past the humour, swearing and banter, it’s clear the hosts, Manny and Carlito, are trying to demystify and improve the industry by discussing it in depth with a wide variety of specialists who work in and along side building trades. The format is solid and comes across like a shop floor, or garage door chat among seasoned professionals who hide nothing. It’s a great view of honesty and reality for an industry which has been wrongly vilified for decades - check it out! CM
