    S4E1: No Place Like Nome

Often Nome, Alaska is claimed to be settled by gold miners, but Alaska Natives have been in the sub-arctic area for thousands of years. It is also unfortunately the site of a disproportionately high number of missing Indigenous and Native Alaskan women. When Up and Vanished host, Payne Lindsey, receives a tip from one of his producers about Florence Okpealuk, an Alaskan native who went missing in 2020, he is drawn to the mystery of her disappearance. As Payne begins his research, he finds an email from Okpeluk's family asking him to cover her case, and is compelled to continue. He will soon learn the difficulty of covering a case in the Land of the Midnight Sun as he begins his journey northward to Nome.

Florence Okpealuk is not the first Alaska Native to go missing from Nome. Seventeen years prior, Sonya Ivanoff was reported missing by her roommates and was found murdered. The crime has forever left a mark on the relationship between the community and the local police department. Payne arrives in Nome and learns that not much has changed since Ivanoff's tragic end. He connects with journalist and Alaska Native, Alice Qannik Glenn, who shares how the story inspired her journalism and changed the way she viewed the world.

Super Troopers?

Episode 8 was torture. It’s like a fictional, farcical representation of the most incompetent and unprofessional police service- except it’s real life. No wonder people go missing and get murdered. Brutal.

The clip of Payne in discussion with the female police administrator at the door was appalling. Her light treatment and indifference to this poor missing man is absolutely disgusting, while his mother and sister suffer without answers. What a disgusting police department. Good work, kudos to Payne & the team.

Seasons 3&4 are a vast improvement

I listened to this show in reverse order, and am glad I did. Obviously the production value improved, but the main difference is in Payne’s role and storytelling. There were definitely some cringe elements in season 1, but 3&4 showed a real depth of empathy and advocacy for the MMIWG crimes and tragedies. Particularly season 4, where the family affected have a central step by voice. For those who liked the later seasons, I’d suggest Someone Knows Something, which I think is the gold standard for ethical, empathetic cold case reporting that centres the voice and healing process of the families at the centre.
