Each week on the movie and culture podcast Captive Audience, regular Outside contributor Alex Ward and his co-hosts break down a classic film that one of them hasn’t seen. This week, they invited Outside Podcast host Peter Frick-Wright to discuss the Keanu Reeves cult classic, and the debacle that is the remake.

Your Rain Jacket May Soon Be Illegal

Your Rain Jacket May Soon Be Illegal

'Forever Chemicals' keep mud out of your boots, and make rain jackets waterproof, but they’re about to be illegal. Back in 2013, footwear maker Keen decided to try and figure out the formula for keeping everyone dry without poisoning our drinking water and contaminating our soil. Could they make high performance boots and shoes without causing cancer and suppressing the immune system? Would the rest of the outdoor industry follow their lead?

Wild Animals Taught Me to… Run!

Wild Animals Taught Me to… Run!

Singer-songwriter David Lindes found his way into running with help from the most unexpected teacher: a bull moose. Growing up in Guatemala David had learned to ignore his body. Thanks to beatings by his adults, his body was a source of pain, and not much else. So he didn’t play sports, he didn’t dance, he found out later he wasn’t even walking correctly. But as an adult, as he started to heal, he began to learn about his body. What it could do, how good it could feel to run and hike through the canyons near his home. Then, one day, he encountered a family of moose. And they put his newfound trust in his body to the test.

ScoutAl ,

Enjoy the show but perspective on relationships please

Long time supporter of podcast, very much appreciate the narrative approach to the outdoors. I have to make a comment on the most recent episode though; I was very much looking forward to the episode entitled “do couples who ski together, stay together?” - and I enjoyed the story and it peaked my interest on Portillo, Chile. I realize those that make the podcast are in a very different stage of life and the couple was very lovely but as a married mom of three small children trying to balance family life with demanding full time job and maintaining myself as an outdoorswoman/athlete - I was flabbergasted that the title referred to a newly married couple still in the famous honeymoon phase of their marriage…it was lovely to reminisce of how we all were when we skied and climbed together at that stage of life without a care in the world but was expecting to hear how a couple had used skiing to face some of the long term and testing challenges had used the outdoors to keep them together as a couple. It was nice to bring in a different element to these stories but a broader perspective on range of life experiences/time in life would be nice next time. Thanks so much.

We hope you continue this podcast a long while!

I am a loyal listener and regularly have my sons listen, too. The stories are full of wisdom - about how to behave outside, what to watch out for, what we can do when we put our minds to it - and the storytelling, sounds, the story structure, all make the listening extremely pleasurable. I heard you mention you are deciding whether to continue - we certainly hope you do!
