Why the U.S. Wins the World Cup Economically (Without Even Winning)

The Economics of the World Cup: Prestige, Tourism, and Why the U.S. Wins Financially Nick discusses the World Cup’s broader economic and social impact beyond sports, arguing that international competition and hosting major events can boost a country’s prestige and reputation, especially for smaller nations, while sometimes serving as “sports washing” (with Brazil cited). He suggests successful hosting often signals development, referencing Seoul 1988, Beijing 2008, and LA 1984, and predicts the U.S. will host another World Cup as soon as 2038 (or 2042) due to strong domestic ratings, sold-out matches, and existing NFL-stadium infrastructure. Nick expects limited U.S. GDP or employment impact because the event is distributed across many cities, but anticipates reputational and tourism benefits. High ticket prices are framed as vacation substitutes or luxury spending by elites. Nick ends with a disclaimer and plugs for a Substack and upcoming events in Denver, Santa Cruz, San Diego, and Newport Beach. Why You Have Same Career as Your Parents

The Truth About Social Mobility: Why Kids Often Inherit Their Parents’ Careers Occupational and income mobility often stay within the “niches” people grow up in. People are far more likely to share a profession with their parents—especially in licensed fields like medicine and law. Drivers include human-capital transmission, psychological conditioning (notably for entrepreneurs), and inherited networks. The Economy Is Strong. So Why Is Everyone Miserable?

Economic sentiment in 2025–2026 is near record lows despite strong measures like low unemployment, solid real GDP growth (Atlanta Fed GDPNow around 4%), and expansionary ISM readings, while inflation has ticked up to about 3.8% partly tied to oil-price spikes from the war in Iran. Traditional sentiment indicators are described as increasingly politicized, yet pessimism appears to be broadening beyond partisan lines, reflecting concerns about job-market instability and rising living costs. A key explanation is that social media amplifies dissatisfaction: negative experiences are voiced more loudly, algorithms reward outrage, and constant exposure to wealthier lifestyles heightens resentment and feelings of relative decline. As a result, the economy can be growing while many people experience it as worse, especially if gains are unevenly distributed. Where the Upper Classes Live in the American South

Geography of Wealth in the American South: Old Money vs New Money (Austin, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Tampa) Nick continues the Geography of Wealth series by explaining how Southern wealth shifted from a plantation-based economy largely destroyed by the Civil War to a post-1980 boom driven by air conditioning, business-friendly policies, and migration, making the region more new-money dominated. He maps old- and new-money areas in five Southern cities: Austin (older areas east of the Colorado River like Tarrytown/Pemberton Heights/Enfield; newer wealth west and in South Austin and hill-country suburbs), New Orleans (old money in the Garden District and Audubon Park/Carrollton; limited new money near Metairie Country Club amid long-term decline), Nashville (limited old money in Belle Meade; newer wealth in Brentwood and Franklin), Atlanta (wealth concentrated north, with Buckhead a core mix; old money also in Cascade Heights, Inman Park, Druid Hills/Ansley; new money in northern suburbs from Sandy Springs to Alpharetta/Milton), and Tampa (old money in Davis Islands and Palma Ceia; new money south of Kennedy and on Pinellas barrier islands and Belleair areas). How to Network into Higher Social Classes

Nick argues most networking advice is ineffective because it prioritizes indiscriminate events and business-card tactics instead of building genuine relationships before you need them. He explains that at any event most people won’t click with you, so aiming for universal appeal is a poor strategy, and for professionals networking is often about finding true peers rather than social climbing. He recommends clarifying long-term goals, attending environments aligned with your real interests, and approaching conversations with curiosity rather than an agenda. Nick emphasizes giving first through referrals, keeping track of helpful contacts, and using personal stories to break the ice organically. He discusses how event pricing can filter crowds, why authenticity matters to avoid “social climbing” vibes, and why planting roots in one community helps networking compound over years, with elite schools or top firms as the only partial fast track. Cat Ladies & Peter Pans: How Aging Millennials Will Shape Cities

This episode explores how low marriage and birth rates among millennials, combined with “Peter Pan syndrome,” are reshaping major cities—especially San Francisco and Santa Monica—as their median ages rise and families become rarer. It argues that aging, childless urban populations change everything from community investment and school demand to politics, housing policy, and long-term economic dynamism. The script also introduces a “Peter Pan income shock,” where older professionals face squeezed real incomes and AI-driven layoffs, potentially creating a larger lower-income cohort in expensive urban cores. The host predicts more anti-growth, protectionist city politics, greater reliance on tourism, office-to-hotel conversions, and eventual migration toward lower-cost cities like Charlotte, Atlanta, and Dallas, ending with questions about the broader economic implications.
