Now It's Ruined

Kate Bridal and Larkin Harrington

Hello! We're Now It's Ruined, a podcast that reveals questionable facts about everyday objects, activities, and people in the hopes that you will never be able to truly enjoy them again. Hosts Kate Bridal and Larkin Harrington answer seemingly innocent questions like "Where did hammocks come from?" and "Who invented the chainsaw?" with distinctly unpleasant facts. We talk about the dark side of things we tend to take for granted and highlight the people who are often left out of the narrative. While we are a comedy podcast, we discuss some very disturbing and violent things, so listener discretion is always advised.

    31. Weed

Happy 4/20! In honor of the informal holiday, we’re giving you this episode two entire days early! If you celebrate, grab your favorite means of ingestion and listen as Larkin talks all things sticky and icky, breaking down the history of how cannabis was used as an excuse for racism and anti-immigrant sentiment, eventually leading to its criminalization. The movement against this hearty “herb” has fueled oppression, fed the prison-industrial complex, and stalled research about the potential benefits. Plus, the formerly social drug is now increasing social isolation among 1 in 15 American adults.  References Kursgesagt - In a Nutshell “You Need to Quit Weed” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brm71uCWr-I TIME Magazine article “420 Day: Why There Are So Many Different Names for Weed” Katy Steinmetz. Episode 30. Clothing Sizes (Feat. KP Deluxe)

Kate and Larkin welcome fashion enthusiast and content creator KP Deluxe, who tells us about the predictably racist, patriarchal origins of sizing in fashion. KP outlines our journey from bespoke, customizable pieces to the fast fashion nightmare of today, and how the realities of women’s bodies were repeatedly ignored in favor of mass production.  Follow KP/Styled Over Substance on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.  Check out Ifemi, the ready-to-wear line for plus-sized women, and sign up to be notified when it drops. Episode 29. Patreon Upcycle: The Origin of the Boycott

We’re upcycling this week to give Kate a break as she prepares for a panel at Wonder-Con (March 27, 2026 at 6 pm in room 207!). Thankfully we have a timely one for you: The story of the boycott, a great example of community advocacy that’s quite relevant today. Plus, it’s about the Irish, so the fact that it was recently St. Patrick’s day lined up nicely as well!  Get ready to learn about the man behind the movement, mediocre white man Charles Boycott. Boycott worked as a land agent for the oppressed tenant farmers of British-occupied Ireland in the 1850s, showing up post-famine and pissing off pretty much everyone. His refusal to lower rents, imposition of fines for petty violations, and general jerkishness did not ingratiate him to the locals. Little did he know that his name would live on as one of the most effective tools in the protest playbook.  Kate also gives you a hefty (yet woefully inadequate) summary of the conflicts between the English and Irish up to 1853. She does her best to hit the highlights from 700 years of war and rebellion, including the Norman invasion, Oliver Cromwell’s campaign of terror, and the pathetic English response to the famine that killed a million people.  And, as a bonus, you’ll hear the origin of boycatting! Episode 28. Hammocks (Full Episode)

It’s our 1-year anniversary!!! To thank you for making our first year so fantastic, we finally did the full-length episode on hammocks that we’ve been promising since we started with the mini-sode a year ago.  Kate dives more into the history and culture of the Taino people, including their invention of the hammock, as well as the deeply horrific details of their encounters with the Spanish, instigated by Christopher Columbus.  This episode comes with an enormous CONTENT WARNING for graphic violence, including against children and infants, as well as torture, rape, and suicide.  References A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies, Bartolomé de las Casas, first published 1552, translated to English 1689 https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/who-were-taino-original-inhabitants-columbus-island-73824867/ https://www.britannica.com/biography/Bartolome-de-Las-Casas https://origins.osu.edu/milestones/july-2015-bartolom-de-las-casas-and-500-years-racial-injustice https://www.britannica.com/topic/Taino https://www.britannica.com/place/Lesser-Antilles https://www.britannica.com/place/Greater-Antilles https://www.britannica.com/topic/shifting-agriculture https://www.taino-tribe.org/tribal-culture.html https://tainomuseum.org/taino/ https://www.rutopia.com/en/blog/the-hammocks-mayan-handcrafts-for-your-home https://www.caneycircle.org/female/ https://www.britannica.com/biography/Christopher-Columbus#ref25447 https://www.biography.com/history-culture/christopher-columbus https://en.unesco.org/silkroad/content/did-you-know-spread-islam-southeast-asia-through-trade-routes https://www.worldhistory.org/article/2045/the-gold-of-the-conquistadors/ https://www.metmuseum.org/essays/gold-of-the-indies https://www.ebsco.com/research-starters/history/transatlantic-slave-trade-begins https://www.njstatelib.org/research_library/new_jersey_resources/highlights/african_american_history_curriculum/unit_2_rise_of_afro-americans/ https://www.britannica.com/biography/Christopher-Columbus/The-second-and-third-voyages https://www.hatueyproject.org/who-is-hatuey/ https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1769869/ https://chacruna.net/latinos-coast-to-coast/ If you know something we can ruin, send the topic and a brief hint at how it's ruined to nowitsruined@gmail.com. This week, Kate and Larkin are thrilled to chat with professional cosplayer Alia Pyatt, aka Magical Black Girl Alia, who discusses her experiences as a Black female cosplayer. While her time in cosplay has been overwhelmingly positive, she’s also seen her fair share of racism, sexism, and ableism in the community. About
