Why Can’t I Moderate? with Addiction Psychiatrist Dr Daniel Hochman (Subscriber Exclusive)

Dr Daniel Hochman is a board-certified addiction psychiatrist who specialises in understanding the emotional and psychological drivers behind substance use. As the first doctor on the show, I had questions that continuously come up in my interviews, but I was hesitant to ask them in case they seemed too “basic” to bring to a doctor. But I realised pretty quickly these aren’t basic questions at all, they’re the ones we all end up asking at some point in our journey. Like, why can’t we moderate? Is addiction a genetic trait? And why do some people keep using even when they know it’s ruining their lives? This conversation was incredibly insightful, and I’m so grateful for Dr Hochman’s time. I hope you enjoy this chat with Dr Daniel Hochman. Growing up around addiction, instability and an absent father shaped the course of Luke’s life long before he understood it. Childhood Trauma and a Three-Day Exorcism: Danny’s Story (Subscriber Exclusive)

Experiencing sexual abuse as a young child, unfortunately, isn’t unique in Danny’s family. The women in her lineage carry their own stories too. In this episode, we explore what going through something like that at such a young age does to a person, not feeling safe, not being believed, and how those experiences ripple into adulthood. By just 12 years old, Danny had already been exposed to gambling harm, turning to pokies as a way to self-soothe. She later faced eating disorders, serious mental health breakdowns, and a three-day exorcism. TRIGGER WARNING: this episode discusses suicide and touches on themes some may find confronting, including spirituality and experiences that sit outside the norm. 4. The Hidden Grip of Pokies: How a Mum of Six Nearly Lost Everything

    26 APR

The Hidden Grip of Pokies: How a Mum of Six Nearly Lost Everything

If a mum of six can walk into her local pub and lose hundreds of thousands on a poker machine, where does the responsibility actually sit? Is it the machines, engineered to be addictive? The system that allows them to exist in every pub and club across the country? Or the individual sitting in front of them? In this episode I sit down with Kate Seselja, founder of The Hope Project, who shares her 15-year experience of gambling harm inside Australia's pokies crisis. She opens up about pulling money from her family business and mortgage just to keep playing, and what it actually cost her and her family. I also bring in a political voice. NSW Greens MP Cate Faehrmann joins to break down what is really happening, or not happening, in parliament when it comes to poker machine reform in Australia. When Porn Turns Compulsive with Jeremy Lipkowitz (Subscriber Exclusive)

Jeremy’s earliest memory of being exposed to erotic material started young, when a shopping catalogue with a lingerie section began arriving at his family home. What started as curiosity became something he kept returning to, and over time, his relationship with porn escalated. It began impacting how he saw women, behaved socially, and showed up in his relationships. What once felt private was no longer contained. In this episode, Jeremy opens up about what porn addiction can actually look like, how to recognise when it’s becoming a problem, and the impact it can have on your brain, behaviour and relationships. We also explore how to approach the conversation with a partner if you’re concerned about their habits, and how parents can navigate these conversations with their children in a healthy, open way. "Jeremy Lipkowitz is a former Buddhist monk meditation teacher and coach helping high-achieving men break free from compulsive behaviours especially porn addiction and build lives of integrity and fulfilment. With 15+ years of meditation experience and time spent in silent retreat he blends ancient wisdom with modern science to support lasting change. JOIN THE UNSPOKEN: https://patreon.com/SoberlySpeaking Sarah went sober twice. The first time, she did everything right. AA, the meetings, the label, the work. It held for two years. Then it didn't. The second time, she did none of that. No meetings, no sponsor, no step work. She poured the leftovers down the sink, snapped her cigarettes so she couldn't tape them back together, and decided she was done. That was three years ago. Together we talk about what it actually takes to stop when you are truly ready. Sarah talks about growing up in a drinking household, functioning through her twenties and thirties with her career intact, and the moment she looked around a pub and realised she was becoming the furniture. She also gets into why she refuses the word alcoholic, and what it felt like to discover the person underneath was someone she actually liked. Trigger warning: this episode contains discussion of alcohol dependency and drug use. The Secret Inside the Family: Understanding Tanisha’s Substance Use

Trigger warning: This episode discusses child SA within a family, domestic violence and su*cide. Listener discretion is advised. Support resources are listed below. As a teenager, when Tanisha tried to speak her truth, she was not believed by those closest to her. That silence left her carrying a deep emotional weight alone. Over time, she entered a difficult and unsafe relationship, and in that period she began using cash advances to obtain substances, believing she would not have a long future. When the money ran out, she turned to alcohol, believing it was a more socially accepted way to cope. What started as occasional drinking gradually became more frequent. It wasn’t until she began therapy that she was able to reframe her past, reflect on her experiences, and slowly move toward sobriety.
