Loonies and bins: Britain's long love affair with novelty politics

It's pretty grim when your main political opponent is a man with a bin for a head. That's the situation that's faced Nigel Farage in the Clacton byelection in the UK. Count Binface has pledged to nationalise the singer Adele, cap the price of ice creams and build at least one affordable house. It might sound surreal, but the count isn’t the first satirical candidate in election history. Historian Richard Toye argues we should take them seriously. You can read his analysis on our website. The soviet origins of shadow libraries

Balázs Bödö's first interaction with a shadow library was when, as a young professor at university in Budapest, he was faced with a dilemma: what should he teach his students? Is time an illusion?

Without a sense of time, leading us from cradle to grave, our lives would make little sense. But on the most fundamental level, physicists aren't sure whether the sort of time we experience exists at all. We talk to three experts and find out if time could potentially be moving backwards as well as forwards. Is there a multiverse?

Interest in the multiverse theory, suggesting that our universe is just one of many, has spiked since the movie Everything Everywhere All At Once was released. The film follows Evelyn Wang on her journey to connect with versions of herself in parallel universes to stop the destruction of the multiverse. The multiverse idea has long been an inspiration for science fiction writers. But does it have any basis in science? And if so, is it a concept we could ever test experimentally? Featuring Andrew Pontzen, professor of Cosmology at University College London, Katie Mack, Hawking chair in cosmology and science communication at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, and Sabine Hossenfelder, research fellow of physics at the Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies. Fundamental constants: is the universe fine tuned for life to exist?

Imagine a universe with extremely strong gravity. Stars would be able to form from very little material. They would be smaller than in our universe and live for a much shorter amount of time. But could life evolve there? It after all took human life billions of years to evolve on Earth under the pleasantly warm rays from the Sun. Now imagine a universe with extremely weak gravity. Its matter would struggle to clump together to form stars, planets and – ultimately – living beings. It seems we are pretty lucky to have gravity that is just right for life in our universe. How Manchester shaped Andy Burnham, the UK's incoming prime minister

Three months ago, Andy Burnham’s desk was filled with the business of running Greater Manchester. Buses. Housing. Policing. This mayoral region in the north of England is home to 3 million people and Burnham, a former minister in the Labour governments of Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, has been its mayor for nearly a decade. But after a whirlwind ten weeks, Burnham travelled to Buckingham Palace on July 20 to meet King Charles, who appointed him as Britain’s new prime minister. At the heart of Burnham’s plans for power lies Manchesterism, a political philosophy that centres on giving cities and towns outside London more political control. In this episode, we explore how running Greater Manchester shaped Andy Burnham’s politics with researchers Kirsty Fairclough from Manchester Metropolitan University and Philip Brown from the University of Huddersfield. They assess what Burnham achieved as mayor and discuss whether a philosophy designed around one city can work on a national level for the UK. Quantum mechanics: does objective reality exist?

It is hard to shake the intuition that there's a real and objective physical world out there. If I see an umbrella on top of a shelf, I assume you do too. And if I don't look at the umbrella, I expect it to remain there as long as nobody steals it. But the theory of quantum mechanics, which governs the micro-world of atoms and particles, threatens this commonsense view. Anne et les tambours des chamanes Kham-Magar

Consommation d’Ayahuasca, incantations magiques sur Facetime et séjours de reconnexion à la nature : les pratiques dites chamaniques ont la cote. Mais, qu’est-ce vraiment que le chamanisme ? Loin des people en manque de sensations fortes et des stages à plusieurs milliers d’euros la semaine, les pratiques rituelles des chamanes sont avant tout ancrées dans un rapport à l’invisible, à la connaissance et au sensible. Mais les chamanes partagent rarement leur savoir via un compte Instagram. Il faut négocier, se familiariser avec les praticiens, respecter leur réticence, patienter parfois des mois voire des années. C’est ce qu’a fait l’anthropologue Anne de Sales au début de sa thèse : nous sommes en 1981 et elle part vivre durant 18 mois dans un village de l’ouest du Népal. Adeline et le village de Maître Feng

De Bruce Lee aux films hongkongais de Kung-fu, nombreux sont celles et ceux qui ont grandi en rêvant de temples perdus au sommet d'une montagne chinoise ou de vénérables sages à la barbe immaculée et au coup de pied parfait. Dans une Chine communiste post-Mao, on imagine que la religion a souvent été reléguée au folklore ou à la culture pop'. Pourtant il existe des lieux et des personnes qui tentent tant bien que mal de faire vivre des traditions ancestrales. C'est ainsi que l'anthropologue Adeline Herrou fait la connaissance de Maître Feng. Un jour de printemps au tournant de l'année 2013, elle découvre ce que le moine taoïste est en train de bâtir. Muriel et Saïdou

En 2016 environ 9 000 enfants vivaient dans les rues au Burkina Faso, en particulier dans les deux grandes villes du pays, Ouagadougou et Bobo Dioulasso. Ces enfants, livrés à eux mêmes et débrouillards portent un nom: les «bakoroman». Comme l'explique l'anthropologue Muriel Champy, les bakoroman «s’insèrent dans différentes niches de l’économie urbaine et assurent leur survie au quotidien par le vol, la mendicité et les petits boulots.» En grandissant quelques uns viennent à leur tour en aide à d'autres enfants. C'est le cas de Saïdou. Ce jeune homme a marqué la vie et les recherches de Muriel Champy.
