The Trial+: Robert Bush - "Dishonesty, Deception and Heartlessness”

The funeral director described by Judge Justice Hilliard as being driven by "dishonesty, deception and heartlessness" has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. In this episode, Caroline is joined by reporter Glen Keogh to discuss the sentencing of Robert Bush, the 47 year old undertaker from Hull who pleaded guilty to denying 30 people a decent and proper burial, stealing from charities, and fraudulent trading over more than a decade. One of Bush's victims, Michaela Baldwin, shares the heartbreaking story of discovering that her stepfather was one of the 35 bodies left at the funeral parlour. She explains why she believes the 20 year sentence does not go far enough. Caroline also speaks to Karen Dry, who set up a support group for the affected families. Bush's funeral business handled the funerals of both of Karen's parents, and she has since been campaigning for stricter regulation of the funeral industry and believes a public inquiry should be held. Finally, we hear from one of the first responders at Legacy Independent Funeral Services who discussed what he saw as 'harrowing' and 'disturbing'. In this episode Caroline and Nick have the start of the defence case - and the news that Simon Levy will not be giving evidence. His barrister Siobhan Grey KC told the judge he would not be going into the witness box to face questions but she said again he did not harm any of the woman at the centre of this case. She said no crimes were committed. Today we also have the latest from Hull Crown Court and the extraordinary story of Robert Bush - the funeral director who deceived the local community on an "industrial scale" after he failed to bury and cremate their loved ones. We also speak to Karen Dry, who still doesn't know for sure if the ashes she carries with her are her mum and dad.
