    Alcohol is the Worst One

Miquita Oliver and Jordan Stephens debate your questions around the substances people take to escape from the world at times, and Miquita reveals she only recently dated soberly for the first time. They get into why alcohol is legal while other mind-altering things are not, and why many of us can be afraid to sit with our feelings. Is it about time we got comfortable with being uncomfortable? Next week the theme is DRUGS - part 2! So much more to explore. Professor Liz Morris, glaciologist

Professor Liz Morris is a glaciologist whose work in some of the earth’s most inhospitable environments has broadened humanity’s understanding of climate change and polar science. Her accolades include the prestigious Polar Medal and an OBE for services to Polar Science. Liz was born in London in 1946 and family legend has it that she fell in love with snow and ice the following year during what was known as the Big Freeze - one of the most severe and punishing winters in British history. She studied physics at Bristol University and applied for a role at the British Antarctic Survey in the early Seventies. At that time the institute did not have any female scientists working in the field and her application was rejected. Liz bided her time and eventually did get to work at the BAS, becoming head of the Ice and Climate Division in 1986. The following year she became the first British woman to undertake tent-based research in Antarctica, arriving just as the ozone hole discovery was breaking. Liz completed her last field trip in 2014. In 2020 the Antarctic Place-Names Committee named a glacier in her honour. Liz divides her time between the Cotswolds and Scotland. SIMON PEGG: I Want To Be a Good Man For My Daughter

Simon Pegg is a legend of the entertainment industry, with a career spanning more than 30 years. Growing up in Gloucester with a cinema just down the road, Simon’s deep love of films was fostered early on. From Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End to Star Trek and the Mission: Impossible franchise, he’s built one of the most beloved bodies of work. I grew up watching Simon’s films, so getting the chance to meet him was surreal. We talked about everything from working with Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams to our shared love of horror movies and what it means to be a good dad. In this conversation, Simon shares: Why he’ll never make a sequel to the Cornetto TrilogyBeing the child of divorce and what that’s taught him as a parent His favourite thing about his best friend, Nick Frost The moment he got the call for Mission: Impossible  Simon is a reminder that turning a childhood passion into a lifelong career isn't about luck, it's about never letting go of the thing you love. Jennie Godfrey: 'midlife is a powerful place if you lean into it'

My guest today is the bestselling novelist Jennie Godfrey. Jennie has experienced the kind of midlife turnaround most of us can only dream of. She started her career working in HR and rose to the top of her chosen industry working for a large corporation. Life was a whirlwind of high powered meetings, swanky job titles, frocks and heels - and boozing to release the pressure valve. Cue burn out - and drying out! In her mid 40s, in the midst of what she now knows was perimenopause, Jennie took voluntary redundancy and stepped back from her corporate job. Without a packed diary and a plan for the first time in decades she took a job in her local bookshop and signed up for a creative writing course.  There she started writing her debut novel, The List of Suspicious Things, loosely inspired by her childhood growing up in West Yorkshire during the reign of the Yorkshire Ripper. It became the subject of a massive publisher auction, went to number one in the Sunday Times Bestseller lists and was the biggest debut of 2024. Now she’s followed it up with The Barbecue at No9, set in the summer of 1985 amidst the biggest music event in history, Live Aid. Jennie came to my flat to hang out with sausage the cat and talk about what it’s been like living the fairytale publishing dream. But don’t hate her! We also discussed how it felt to lose herself both physically and mentally in her 40s, how she recognises balance when she swings past it, growing up as a ‘glass child’, becoming visible in her 50s and rediscovering her lighthearted teenage self thanks to kitchen discos. Hear Jennie talking about The List of Suspicious Things to The Shift bookclub. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Barbecue at No.9 by Jennie Godfrey as well as the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by Sam Baker. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift is created, hosted and produced by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls at Pineapple Audio Productions. Melvin Odoom: MiniDiscs, Memories and an Olympic Torch

In this episode Dilly is joined by Melvin Odoom for a cheeky and surprisingly revealing chat about the objects he just can’t let go of. Melvin brings along three items that tell the story of his life so far – a stack of MiniDiscs packed with homemade radio demos from his early attempts to break into broadcasting, a treasured Olympic torch from the London 2012 Games, and a retro computer game from his childhood that still brings back memories of growing up. As Dilly digs into the stories behind each item, Melvin opens up about why he gets emotionally attached to objects, the memories they hold, and why he struggles to throw anything away. From nostalgic childhood moments to the hustle of trying to make it in radio, the conversation is packed with laughs, honest reflections and plenty of cheeky back-and-forth between the pair. Along the way, Dilly tries to work out whether Melvin is sentimental or simply incapable of having a clear-out – and Melvin does his best to defend the ever-growing collection of memories he keeps around him. Information and support for some of the issues covered in our programmes can be found at bbc.co.uk/actionline Sort Your Life Out Unpacked is hosted by tidying expert Dilly Carter. In each episode, Dilly chats to a celebrity guest and unboxes three mystery objects from their home that reveal what is really important to them. At the end, Dilly asks her guest whether they are going to keep, donate or recycle any of the items and, along the way, we learn how to organise and sort our own lives out.
