OMG guys the Walter Rodney episode was my introduction to this podcast show. Wow wow wow. I absolutely loved it.
I was looking for a podcast on WI cricket and a friend pointed me this way. I’m British born Caribbean (Barbados & Montserrat) and needed more than the occasional commentaries on Sky and TNT/BT Sport. Looking at the back catalogue I have a lot to sink my teeth into.
However, this episode really touched a nerve. To understand cricket in general and especially the rivalries (e.g. ashes, India/Pakistan etc) or the significance of Lords you have to understand history. It’s fundamental. So because I self-studied Walter Rodney at A-Level nearly 40 years ago, it was really refreshing to link the discussion back to the current state of the team and the region right at the end of the show. The whole conversation was fantastic as it’s so important to highlight Caribbean history beyond Bob Marley, jerk chicken and reggae-reggae sauce.
Please don’t want another two years for a history conversation. I see connections between the current IPL and Kerry Packer World Series Cricket. Would Colin Croft be better remembered if he didn’t join a rebel tour of South Africa? I was recently in Antigua and I didn’t see anyone playing cricket and the but it was sad to see the old ARG crumbling away.
Can’t wait to dip into more episodes and in the meantime, I’ll rewatch Fire in Babylon to provide some context.
Thanks guys!
