Ep. 130 - From Rock Bottom to Helping Others Rebuild Their Lives with Pat Oden

What happens when addiction takes you to the edge of losing everything, including your life? On this episode of the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Pat Oden, a person in long-term recovery, recovery coach, therapist, trainer, and passionate advocate for individuals and families navigating addiction, mental health challenges, and recovery. Pat's story begins with a childhood shaped by his father's battle with cancer, anxiety, and the overwhelming feeling that life could change at any moment. At just 13 years old, he discovered alcohol and drugs as a way to escape those emotions. What began as temporary relief eventually became years of destructive drinking, isolation, and a downward spiral that nearly cost him his life. At 34, Pat found himself alone in a Brooklyn apartment, physically deteriorating from alcoholism. A wellness check initiated by his mother led to hospitalization, a difficult detox, and a life-changing realization. He didn't just want to survive addiction. He wanted to help others survive it too. Today, Pat has transformed that experience into a life dedicated to recovery coaching, therapy, advocacy, and community support. Adam and Pat explore the importance of compassion in addiction treatment, overcoming stigma, family dynamics, healthy boundaries, mental health, and why there is no one-size-fits-all approach to recovery. They also discuss Pat's work with The Lighthouse in New Canaan, Connecticut, where he has spent years supporting individuals and families through recovery coaching, and Friends of Recovery Westchester, where he helps expand access to recovery resources, education, and community programs. From Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and 12-step recovery to SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma, and alternative pathways to healing, Pat shares why empowering individuals to find their own path is essential. This conversation is a reminder that your lowest moment doesn't have to define your future. Sometimes it becomes the beginning of discovering who you were meant to be. Ep. 129 - The Hidden Cost of Being a Functioning Alcoholic with Gary Peluso

What happens when decades of addiction nearly cost you everything—and the life you rebuild is tested by unimaginable loss? On this episode of the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Gary Peluso, entrepreneur, recovery advocate, and co-founder of the No Matter What Foundation, for a powerful conversation about alcoholism, addiction recovery, grief, second chances, and discovering purpose through service. For decades, Gary lived a life surrounded by alcohol, working in restaurants, bars, and the hospitality industry while struggling with his own addiction. What began as a way to feel confident and connected eventually became a destructive cycle that affected his relationships, career, and mental health. In 2016, at age 54, Gary finally acknowledged that he needed help. Nearly ten years into sobriety, his story is a testament to the power of surrender, accountability, community, and personal transformation. But getting sober wasn't the end of his challenges. Gary opens up about his wife's long battle with illness, the devastating impact of alcoholism on their marriage, and the experience of caring for her through her final years. He shares how recovery gave him the strength to remain present, navigate grief, and find meaning during one of the most difficult chapters of his life. Adam and Gary explore Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), 12-step recovery, sponsorship, mental health, the importance of fellowship, and why helping others is essential to building a meaningful life in sobriety. They also discuss the No Matter What Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping individuals access addiction treatment, sober living, and recovery resources when financial barriers stand in the way. Gary shares how a small recovery meeting grew into an organization providing thousands of nights of sober housing support and helping hundreds of individuals pursue recovery. This conversation is about more than overcoming addiction. It's about rebuilding your identity, surviving loss, finding your community, and realizing that your greatest struggles can become the foundation of your purpose. This week on the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Cammy McFadden, recovery advocate, coach, and co-founder of Kindred Spirits Collective, to explore how to build a joyful, connected life without alcohol or drugs. With 35 years of continuous sobriety, Cammy knows recovery is about more than abstinence. Ep. 127 - How to Turn Grief Into Purpose & Help Others Heal with Carli Wargo

What happens when some of the most painful experiences of your life ultimately lead you toward your purpose? In this episode of the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Carli Wargo, licensed clinical social worker, addiction professional, and Executive Director of the InService Foundation, for an honest conversation about addiction, grief, recovery, family trauma, mental health, boundaries, and turning loss into meaningful service. Carli's connection to addiction is deeply personal. Growing up with instability, she experienced the impact of her father's depression and alcohol use while taking on significant responsibility at a young age. Years later, her younger brother died from a heroin overdose at just 21. Her father later passed away after years of struggling with alcohol addiction and depression. Carli opens up about grief, guilt, anger, shame, and the complicated emotions that can come with loving someone struggling with substance use disorder. She shares how working in the addiction field eventually gave her an opportunity to turn her grief into action—and develop a deeper understanding of the disease that profoundly affected her family. Adam and Carli explore addiction as a family disease, the stigma surrounding substance use, supporting someone in recovery, healthy boundaries, family involvement in treatment, relapse, compassion, and why getting sober is often only the beginning of the recovery journey. They also discuss the emotional realities of working in behavioral health—the incredible moments of watching people rebuild relationships, careers, independence, and their lives, alongside the heartbreak of relapse, overdose, and loss. Carli shares the work of the InService Foundation, a national nonprofit providing financial assistance, care coordination, and long-term recovery support to individuals who may otherwise be unable to afford the services they need. Ultimately, this is a conversation about what can happen when grief becomes action, compassion replaces judgment, and our most difficult experiences become an opportunity to serve someone else. Growing up, Lawrence experienced severe bullying, an abusive relationship with his father, and significant mental health challenges. At 12, he began therapy and was diagnosed with complex PTSD. As the oldest sibling, he also felt a deep responsibility to protect his younger siblings while struggling to understand his own emotions. Lawrence shares how therapy, journaling, fitness, mindfulness, fishing, spirituality, and honest self-reflection helped him begin processing his past and changing the trajectory of his life. Ep. 124 - How to Heal from Emotional Abuse & Rediscover Who You Are with Kristen Crabtree

Who were you before trauma, relationships, expectations, and survival taught you who you needed to become? In this episode of the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Kristen Crabtree—author, certified divorce coach, founder of Paramour Paradox, and self-described "archaeologist of the self"—for a powerful conversation about psychological abuse, divorce, trauma recovery, emotional sobriety, authenticity, self-discovery, and finding purpose after losing yourself. Kristen shares her deeply personal journey from experiencing sexual trauma as a teenager to spending 22 years in a psychologically abusive marriage. Over time, control, manipulation, isolation, and self-doubt left her disconnected from her own identity and questioning her ability to make even basic decisions. Everything began to change when Kristen realized she could no longer stay. After leaving her marriage in her mid-50s, she began confronting not only what had happened to her, but an even bigger question: Who am I now? Kristen discusses healing from psychological and narcissistic abuse, EMDR and trauma therapy, alcoholism and recovery, rebuilding self-worth after divorce, and recognizing how survival patterns can become mistaken for identity. She explains why constantly replaying our trauma can keep us attached to the past and explores her concept of "emotional sobriety"—understanding how our bodies and minds can become conditioned to familiar emotional states. Adam and Kristen also explore shame, addiction, emotional regulation, surrender, spirituality, people-pleasing, fear, living intentionally, and learning how to feel emotions without allowing them to control your life. Through Paramour Paradox and her work as an "archaeologist of the self," Kristen now helps people excavate the layers of conditioning and adaptation they've accumulated throughout their lives. Her philosophy challenges the idea that healing requires becoming someone new. Instead, transformation may be about remembering the person who was there all along. This is a conversation about surviving, healing, remembering, and finally giving yourself permission to live as the person you truly are. About Kristen Crabtree Kristen Crabtree is an author, certified divorce coach, and founder of Paramour Paradox. After leaving a 22-year psychologically abusive marriage, Kristen transformed her own healing journey into work designed to help others reconnect with their authentic selves. She is the author of Be the You That's More You Than You've Ever Been and uses psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, lived experience, and self-inquiry to help people uncover who they are beneath conditioning and survival patterns. Ep. 123 - How to Heal Your Past, Love Yourself & Find Your Purpose with Joseph Pellicci

What if the parts of your story you've spent years trying to escape are actually the experiences preparing you for your purpose? In this episode of the Finding Purpose Podcast, Adam sits down with Joseph "JP" Pellicci—entrepreneur, coach, author, and founder of Elite Life Emergence—for a powerful conversation about childhood trauma, self-worth, forgiveness, self-love, spirituality, fatherhood, and breaking the patterns that keep us disconnected from who we truly are. Joseph's story began in Stamford, Connecticut, where he grew up in his family's restaurant business and learned responsibility at an early age. But behind that upbringing were experiences that would profoundly shape his identity: struggling with dyslexia and special education, bullying, violence, feeling unsafe, becoming a father at just 15, raising children as a single father, and carrying a deeply rooted belief that he wasn't enough. Years later, discovering his wife's affair became another defining moment. Instead of allowing the experience to destroy him, Joseph began questioning the patterns that continued appearing throughout his life. What followed was a journey inward—toward responsibility, forgiveness, gratitude, spirituality, self-acceptance, and ultimately self-love. Joseph explains why healing begins when we stop blaming the world around us and become curious about what our triggers may be revealing within us. He and Adam explore childhood wounds, the inner child, external validation, vulnerability, ego, acceptance, nervous system regulation, breathwork, authenticity, relationships, fatherhood, and learning to take responsibility for the life you want to create. They also discuss why purpose isn't necessarily something we need to manufacture or chase. Sometimes finding purpose is a process of removing the conditioning, fear, judgment, and expectations that have separated us from who we have always been. At its core, this conversation is about coming home to yourself—learning to accept your entire story, transforming adversity into growth, and realizing that self-love may be one of the most powerful ways we can change our relationships, our families, and the world around us. About Joseph Pellicci Joseph Pellicci is an entrepreneur, coach, author, and founder of Elite Life Emergence. Through coaching, speaking, transformational experiences, and his book 12 Steps to Loving Yourself, Joseph helps people move beyond external validation, reconnect with themselves, and build lives rooted in self-worth, authenticity, love, and purpose. He is also involved in The Remembrance, an immersive retreat experience designed to help participants reconnect with who they are beneath conditioning, fear, and the noise of everyday life. About

Have you ever felt life is flying by, and as it does you're drifting deeper and deeper into a purposeless abyss? I know I have. Welcome to Finding Purpose. I'm Adam Vohra, and for much of my life I lacked purpose and direction, fueled by events in my early childhood and self medicating myself with alcohol. Together, we'll explore different paths to purpose and how you can make a positive impact in your own unique way. You'll hear stories of resilience, determination, and the pursuit of purpose. We'll delve into the personal journeys of guests who've looked their demons in the eye and conquered them. These remarkable conversations display a common thread with emotional intelligence serving as the beacon to navigate relationships, setbacks and opportunities that present themselves on the path to a fulfilling life. So, join me on this journey as we find meaning and learn how to uncover the beauty of purpose while striving to make a lasting impact in our communities and beyond.
