Episode 6 - A Midnight Clear (1992) with Billy Ray Brewton

A Christmas war movie that's actually more about coming of age in the shadow of death, Keith Gordon's A Midnight Clear casts Ethan Hawke as the leader of a squad of at-the-time rising stars, in what might be the first great performance of his career. It's also the first showcase of his natural ability with voiceover, most famously effective in First Reformed. Your hosts survive a plane crash in the Andes, trying to make meagre rations last without resorting to eating our special guest Conor O' Donnell (The B-Side) and get a gruesome camp fire story from the host of Filmmaker Magazine's Back to One podcast, Peter Rinaldi. Ethan Hawke is floppy-haired perfection in this imperfect one crazy night movie, that turned out to be a little too crazy for our filmmaker sibling guests, the Shakespeare Sisters (Soundtrack to Sixteen, Much Ado). In all seriousness Sam and Tim have been two of the most articulate and passionate film folk I’ve known. Now they get to express their love for one of cinemas best working actors. You can hear in their voices the genuine admiration for Hawke as an actor, writer and human being. All backed up by a wealth of knowledge on his work and their own life histories which drew them to the man.
