50 episodes

Comedian Lee Mack has long had an interest in Buddhism, mindfulness and the possibility of leading a more spiritual life. After a few years of dabbling in meditation, he feels the time has come to decide once and for all whether he should seriously seek spiritual enlightenment.

‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Buddha’ is a new podcast which finds Lee and his friend Neil taking their first (often clumsy) steps on the road to Nirvana.

From picking which type of Buddhism to follow, to contemplating what a woodland creature would say to you if you asked it the time; Lee and Neil explore the principles and practices of Buddhism in a way that spiritual practice has never been explored before… Possibly for very good reason.

Great at the beginning

The first say 20 episodes are really excellent as we follow the two finding their way. So many laughs. After this, the production quality and the content start to really suffer. Lee in particular sort of gives up on the show mentally and starts recording without a decent audio setup and also just doesn’t really seem interested any more. Then he stops attending altogether. At least Neil makes a good go of getting some guests on near the end, leading to some interesting chats.

Inspiring

I started meditating many years ago and then inexplicably stopped. This podcast is so funny and I really admire what Neil and Lee have tried to do here. It’s a huge and often complex subject and if you are from a small Leeds working class background it can be confusing. Neil is enthusiastic and willing to try anything. Lee is more skeptical and reserved. I would say I’m in the middle of that spectrum and that’s the beauty of this show. I can go on the journey and understand both of their point of views. I already own many of the books they discuss and others I have bought (second hand, very cheaply) This podcast has re-ignited my interest and I would like to thank Neil and Lee for this free, informative and often funny podcast.

Intrusive

I love this podcast, Neil and Lee are both great presenters as well as often hilarious. I'm still catching up and have been listening to Neil's episodes with Michael Taft - brilliant and informative even for those of us who have been meditating for a while.
But oh my, those adverts 😟. I get that podcasters have to bring in revenue, and that ads are one way to do so, but I'd much rather pay a charge to listen without interruption. They are so frequent, loud and inappropriate that they really disrupt the flow of the podcast. I'm sometimes getting into quite a meditative state while listening, and then BOOM - some loud chirpy woman telling me about something I have no interest in so that I have to leap to fast forward. Pointless and counterproductive.
