Navigating the AI-Driven Job Search with Jeremy Schifeling

In this episode, NCDA AI Task Force co-chairs Logann Todd and Conquaya James host Jeremy Schifeling, founder of The Job Insiders and author of a book on AI-proofing careers. Jeremy says the biggest shock in today’s AI-driven job market is a perceived loss of control, and he warns that using AI as a substitute for authentic voice makes candidates sound identical and harms hiring outcomes. He recommends using AI as a complement: to clarify fit (ikigai strengths and passions), identify roles, uncover the “burning pain points” behind job descriptions, and edit for specificity and connection rather than ghostwrite generic materials. He emphasizes fact-checking by asking AI to “show your work,” and notes referrals now carry even greater advantage because AI has eroded trust in digital documents. He highlights tools like Yoodli for interview coaching, urges practitioners to experiment to understand AI’s “jagged frontier,” and suggests AI can also help coaches with business-building tasks and entrepreneurship. Jeremy Schifeling is the Founder of The Job Insiders and author of the World's First Book to Help You AI-Proof Your Career. He has devoted his career to helping others succeed in theirs. From leading the Education Team at LinkedIn to the Marketing Team at Khan Academy, he’s touched the lives of millions of people at every stage of their journeys. Logann Todd, MBA, CCSP, GCDF  is a Co-Chair of NCDA's AI Task Force and President of the Michigan Career Development Association. She is the Director of Career Services & Alumni Engagement at United States University. Conquaya James is a Board Certified Counselor at Careers by Design and works with Campus Life at Emory University. She is a Co-Chair of NCDA's AI Task Force and NCDA's Ethics Committee. NCDA’s Research Committee Co-Chairs, Dr. Deb Osborn and Brian Calhoun, host Ville Puonti, winner of The Career Development Quarterly’s Article of the Year, about a Finnish longitudinal study of ninth graders who must choose between vocational or academic tracks. The discussion highlights using values exploration and targeted, holistic counseling, and recommends accessible practitioner tools. Ville Puonti is a career counseling psychologist in the Finnish Public Employment Services and a dissertation researcher with the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. His professional interests focus on the cross-cultural utility of career theories, models and career assessment instruments and evidence-based development of career counselling services, especially in the context of the public employment services. Dr. Galaxina Wright, NCDA Trustee for Counselor Educators and Researchers hosts panelists Dr. Elif Balin (San Francisco State University) and Dr. Jackie Peila-Shuster (Colorado State University) discussing the shrinking number of CACREP-accredited graduate career counseling programs (six remaining) amid job insecurity, AI-driven workplace change, discrimination, immigration barriers, disability, and chronic illness. They describe structural challenges including internship site shifts from counseling to advising/coaching that reduce qualified supervision, licensure terminology and requirements that can marginalize career counseling, and the greater public visibility of career coaching versus career counseling. The panel explains career counseling specialization training within professional counseling programs, emphasizing a wellness model, prevention, and integrating guidance, education, and counseling to address “the thing beneath the thing.” They highlight social justice, advocacy, and “decent work,” and call for stronger collaboration, clearer professional identity, and broader integration of career-work issues across counselor education.
