New hope in Psychiatry with Dr Joanna Taylor

Dr Joanna Taylor is a clinical psychiatrist. Her clinical perspective is further enriched by her background in English literature and political philosophy. She is a generalist with a deep commitment to careful diagnosis and long-term patient care. She has particular interests in ADHD, bipolar disorder, hormonal mental health, psychotherapy, and the rapidly evolving field of interventional psychiatry. Dr Taylor has also played an important role in public mental health in South Africa. Following the Life Esidimeni tragedy, she served on Gauteng’s Mental Health Review Boards. She currently serves on the national SASOP Executive Committee’s Interventional Psychiatry Special Interest Group. In this wide-ranging conversation, we examine the limitations of some longstanding approaches to anxiety, mood and depression. We consider how symptoms might be understood not only as sources of distress, but also as signals and potential levers for meaningful change. We explore the deeper work of healing through psychotherapy and other adjunctive treatments. We discuss adolescent mental health, the pressures facing young people today, and the complexities and potential risks of early pharmaceutical intervention during a period of ongoing psychological, physical, and sexual development. Looking ahead with hope, we explore the promise of interventional psychiatry, including treatments such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine, and consider how these evolving options may offer new possibilities for people who have not responded to conventional treatments. Our conversation touches on the importance of approaching major life and hormonal transitions with awareness, curiosity, and compassion. This is a deeply refreshing and inclusive conversation with a psychiatrist who brings insight, humility, openness, and warmth to the difficult, but often profoundly rewarding landscape of her work. From the Emergency room to Menopause, Dr Bianca Visser's personal story

Dr Bianca Visser is a brilliant emergency medicine specialist. She spent years working on the frontline of emergency medicine, thriving in a world driven by urgency, adrenaline, and high-stakes, life and death decision-making. Like many healthcare professionals, she was trained to put patients first, push through exhaustion, and keep going no matter the personal cost. What she wasn't prepared for was her own experience of premature menopause following a hysterectomy; and the profound impact it would have on her health, identity, family life, and understanding of medicine and healing itself. In this candid and deeply personal conversation, Dr Bianca shares how her own health journey led her to become a certified menopause expert and advocate. She reflects on the culture of healthcare, the dangers of chronic stress and work addiction, and the sacrifices many high achievers make in pursuit of professional success. Together, we explore the reality that menopause remains significantly underrepresented in medical training, leaving both doctors and patients navigating this transition with limited knowledge and support. Honest, vulnerable, and inspiring, Dr Visser's story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when we stop chasing the next adrenaline rush and start listening to what our bodies have been trying to tell us all along. For healthcare professionals, workaholics, and anyone striving to balance ambition with wellbeing, this conversation offers both a wake-up call and a hopeful path forward.
