Hope and Help For Fatigue & Chronic Illness

Institute For Neuro-Immune Medicine

Welcome to the Hope and Help for Fatigue and Chronic Illness Podcast. It's our mission to help people that have some really complicated illnesses. People that have post viral syndrome like long COVID and ME/CFS or chronic fatigue. Those that have had toxic exposures like gulf war illness, mold exposures, pesticides and heavy metals. These illnesses can present very similarly, they can actually look the same to your clinician. You may have fatigue, post exertional malaise, foggy brain and many other symptoms that seem to be common across many illnesses. Underneath all of these illnesses, the causes of the symptoms are very similar. We know first hand how hard it is to get access to meaningful information and care when you find yourself or a loved one here. It is our hope to give you, bit by bit, the knowledge and ideas that we have seen make a positive impact on individuals just like you. And that you will take all those threads and begin to weave back together a healthier person. Brought to you by the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine where we have over 200 years of combined clinical experience in Neuro-Inflammatory disease.

Environmental Medicine and the Root Causes of Chronic Illness

Donate to the Institute: https://givenow.nova.edu/assaf-family-and-community-me-cfs-endowed-fund-campaign/?a=1  In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy shares insights with Dr. Irma Rey, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and environmental medicine at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine, to explore how environmental factors are damaging the immune systems of patients with ME/CFS, Gulf War illness, and chronic inflammatory disease. Dr. Rey explains how mold toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, plastics, and electromagnetic exposure disrupt immune signaling at the cellular level, causing cytokine dysregulation, natural killer cell dysfunction, and viral reactivation in patients who were previously able to keep latent viruses in check. She introduces the concept of total body toxic load and explains why detoxification efforts fail when environmental exposures are not simultaneously reduced. She also shares practical guidance on water filtration, the Environmental Working Group's tap water database, the dirty dozen produce list, and sleep hygiene as it relates to immune restoration. This is a conversation about the environmental piece that most physicians are not trained to look for, and why it may be the missing key for so many patients who have tried everything else. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness. Dr. Irma Rey, M.D., is the Director of Medical Education at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine at Nova Southeastern University. Board-certified in internal medicine and environmental medicine, she is a former president of the American Academy of Environmental Medicine and has spent over a decade treating patients with ME/CFS, mold illness, environmental toxicity, and immune dysfunction alongside Dr. Nancy Klimas. From Disease Management to True Preventative Healthcare with Deepa Verma, M.D., AIHM

Donate to the Institute: https://givenow.nova.edu/assaf-family-and-community-me-cfs-endowed-fund-campaign/?a=1  In today's episode, Makena Thompson speaks with Dr. Deepa Verma, a double board-certified MD in integrative and anti-aging medicine, to examine why our population is sicker than ever despite greater access to healthcare. Dr. Verma argues that what we call healthcare is actually sick care. Rather than teaching people how to live well, the system waits for disease to develop and manages it with pharmaceuticals that treat symptoms rather than causes. She draws on 13 years of integrative practice to explain how the modern food supply, environmental toxins, glyphosate, microplastics, and chemical exposures in the home are driving the rise in autoimmune disease, infertility, hormone disruption, and chronic fatigue. She also addresses why so many patients are told their labs are normal when they clearly are not well, and what a truly preventative model of care would require. If you are tired of being managed and ready to understand the root cause, this episode is your starting point. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness. Dr. Deepa Verma is double board certified in family medicine and integrative functional medicine from Rutgers Medical School (formerly known as Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Dr. Verma completed her family medicine residency at Somerset Medical Center and was elected Chief Resident. After years of searching for deeper fulfillment treating patients traditionally, Dr. Verma changed course. She followed her passion to educate and heal individuals as a whole, rather than just focusing on treating symptoms. This led her to found Synergistiq Integrative Health in 2013. From the beginning, her goal has been to create a practice that could give patients an opportunity for a healthier and happier version of life. She understands frustrated patients who are fed up with traditional medicine.Dr. Verma's training has taught her that in order to find a long-term cure, patients need treatment that addresses the root cause of their symptoms, not just addressing their lab numbers. She is also an accomplished author, blogger, and regular television personality.   Website: https://synergistiqhealth.com/  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drdeepavermamd/?hl=en    Makena Thompson is a Research Program Manager at the Institute for Neuro-Immune Medicine at Nova Southeastern University.   Haylie Pomroy, Founder and CEO of The Haylie Pomroy Group, is a leading health strategist specializing in metabolism, weight loss, and integrative wellness. Beyond Blood Tests: Rethinking ME/CFS & Long COVID Diagnosis with Jonas Axelsson, MD, PhD

Donate to the Institute: https://givenow.nova.edu/assaf-family-and-community-me-cfs-endowed-fund-campaign/?a=1    In today's episode, Makena Thompson sits down with Dr. Jonas Axelsson, a Swedish physician-scientist specializing in post-viral diseases, to address one of the most urgent questions in ME/CFS and long COVID care: why do standard blood tests keep coming back normal when patients clearly are not well? Dr. Axelsson breaks down what standard diagnostic panels actually measure, why cellular oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction remain invisible to serum chemistry, and why a clean blood test is not the same as a healthy patient. He also outlines two distinct immune patterns he has identified in this patient population, explains why current criteria-based diagnosis is not sensitive enough to distinguish between them, and shares why he believes validated diagnostic tools and mechanism-based treatments are within reach within five years. Learn why your labs can be normal and your illness can still be very real. Tune in to Hope and Help For Fatigue and Chronic Illness. EP91: What Cell Therapy and Regenerative Medicine Can Do for Chronic Illness with Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, PhD with Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, PhD

Support the Institute today. https://givenow.nova.edu/donations-for-me-cfs-research-2026   In today's episode, Haylie Pomroy talks with Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, a PhD immunologist from UC Irvine and founder of ReStem, for a conversation that brings cutting-edge cell therapy research directly to the chronic illness community.   Dr. Gonzalez breaks down the science of immune exhaustion, explaining why so many patients with ME/CFS, long COVID, POTS, and autoimmune disorders are stuck in a state of dysfunction that conventional labs and appointments often fail to capture. He introduces the concept of senescent cells, what he calls zombie cells, and explains the specific role natural killer cells play in clearing viral burden and restoring immune balance.   Together, Haylie and Dr. Gonzalez explore how cell therapies, specifically quality-cultivated umbilical cord lining stem cells and activated natural killer cells, are being used in clinical studies to re-regulate immune systems that have gone into either hyper-inflammatory overdrive or complete exhaustion. Dr. Gonzalez also clarifies the significant difference between legitimate, rigorously tested cell therapies and the inconsistent products flooding the market under the stem cell label.   Dr. Rafael Gonzalez, PhD is a regenerative medicine expert and researcher with over 20 years of experience in cell biology, stem cell science, and immune health. He earned his PhD and BS from the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on immune system interactions following spinal cord injury. About
