The Pentagon announced plans to livestream Hasan’s firing-squad execution, scheduled for December 3, following his conviction for murdering 13 people in the 2009 Fort Hood attack. The victims, survivors, and their families deserve justice. I believe turning an execution into a public spectacle takes us in the wrong direction. My Catholic faith shapes how I approach punishment, human dignity, repentance, and the value of life—even when the person involved has committed horrific crimes. The Church’s current teaching in Catechism paragraph 2267 calls the death penalty “inadmissible” and affirms that a person’s dignity remains even after grave wrongdoing. Instead, America is once again at war with Iran, the Epstein files became another source of frustration and distrust, and despite a massive increase in immigration enforcement, deportations have struggled to match the scale many immigration hardliners expected. Now the political consequences may be arriving. With the 2026 midterms approaching, Democrats have opened a significant national polling advantage while Republicans are fighting to hold Congress. I believe those attitudes have left many young white men feeling alienated from institutions that they were once deeply represented in. So instead of abandoning Cornell, why not apply in huge numbers?
