Chuck Yates: AI Will Be Bigger Than Shale & the Internet! The Secret to Making Money in Oil & Gas

In this episode of The Energy Executive 360 Podcast, we sit down with Chuck Yates, former Managing Partner at Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors, podcast host and entrepreneur behind Collide, for a conversation about the US shale revolution, oil and gas private equity, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, failure and reinventing yourself.Having spent 25 years in oil and gas private equity, Chuck witnessed firsthand one of the greatest transformations in modern energy history: the American shale revolution. He takes us behind the scenes of how unconventional oil and gas development challenged some of the industry's best engineers, why the economics of shale investing were so unforgiving, and how the revolution transformed global energy markets and geopolitics. Now, Chuck believes we are witnessing another technological revolution — artificial intelligence. Drawing parallels between the internet, shale and AI, he explains why the next wave of innovation could be even more transformative, how energy companies are sitting on enormous amounts of untapped institutional knowledge, and why the people who embrace AI will have a significant advantage over those who don't.But this conversation goes far beyond energy and technology. Chuck opens up about getting fired after 25 years in private equity, expecting his phone to ring with new opportunities only to discover that nobody was calling, and how starting a podcast unexpectedly led him into entrepreneurship. He reflects on the realities of building a business after spending decades investing in others, the lessons learned from divorce and personal setbacks, and why understanding what truly matters in life becomes increasingly important as we get older. What You'll Learn:⬛ How the American shale revolution proved some of the industry's best engineers wrong⬛ What Chuck learned from 25 years investing in oil and gas companies⬛ Why the shale revolution transformed global energy markets and geopolitics⬛ Why successful investing isn't just about picking winners, but knowing when to cut your losses⬛ How the internet, shale and artificial intelligence represent three major technological revolutions⬛ Why Chuck believes AI could transform the energy industry even more profoundly than shale⬛ How AI could unlock decades of institutional knowledge hidden inside energy companies⬛ Why AI won't necessarily take your job — but someone using AI might⬛ What happened when Chuck was fired after 25 years in private equity⬛ How starting a podcast unexpectedly led him to build an AI company⬛ Why being an entrepreneur is far harder than being an investor⬛ What AI revealed about Chuck's own personality and behaviour⬛ The lessons Chuck has learned from failure, divorce and starting over⬛ Why challenging conventional wisdom is essential to innovation and success⬛ How to think about the legacy you want to leave for future generationsFollow Chuck Yates & CollideChuck Yates: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chuck-yates-4935834/ Collide: https://collide.io/ Follow Emilio and The Energy Executive 360Follow Emilio on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/EmilioFaulmataTEE360 Studio: https://www.emiliofaulmata.com #energy #oilandgas #shale #shalerevolution #artificialintelligence #AI #privateequity #energyinvestment #entrepreneurship #leadership #energytechnology #EnergyExecutive360

$900BN Energy Banker: True Price of Success & Why Energy Is Entering Its Greatest Era Yet!

In this episode of The Energy Executive 360 Podcast, we sit down with Stephen Trauber, Chairman and Global Head of Energy and Clean Technology at Moelis & Company, for a conversation about energy, investment banking, leadership, winning and the real price of success.Across a 38-year career, Stephen has advised on more than $900 billion of transactions across the energy industry. But despite nearly four decades in the business, he believes there has never been a better time to be in energy than today — with growing demand for natural gas, LNG, power, data centres and infrastructure creating a new wave of opportunity across the sector.Stephen also takes us behind the scenes of the world of energy investment banking and M&A. He explains why even the best bankers may only win 10–15% of the opportunities they compete for, why losing is an essential part of becoming successful, and how relationships, trust and relentless preparation ultimately separate the best from everyone else. But this conversation goes far beyond deals. Stephen opens up about the sacrifices required to reach the top, why he tells young people that investment banking “is not a balanced life,” building high-performing teams, raising a family alongside an extraordinarily demanding career, and what nearly four decades of winning and losing have taught him about the real meaning of success. What You'll Learn⬛ Why Stephen believes there has never been a better time to be in energy⬛ What he has learned from advising on more than $900 billion of energy transactions⬛ Why even the world's best investment bankers may lose 85–90% of the time⬛ What really happens behind the scenes of major energy M&A deals⬛ How a proposed acquisition offering a 45% premium still fell apart⬛ Why Stephen treats investment banking like a competitive sport⬛ Why he tells aspiring bankers: “This job is going to grind you”⬛ How to build, develop and lead high-performing teams⬛ Why trust, relationships and confidentiality matter at the highest levels of business⬛ The real price of success — and whether it's ultimately worth payingChapters[INSERT CHAPTERS]Follow Stephen Trauber & MoelisStephen Trauber: https://www.linkedin.com/in/emiliofaulmata/Moelis & Company: https://www.moelis.com/Follow Emilio and The Energy Executive 360Follow Emilio on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/EmilioFaulmataTEE360 Studio: https://www.emiliofaulmata.com#energy #oilandgas #investmentbanking #mergersandacquisitions #leadership #energytransition #naturalgas #LNG #privateequity #EnergyExecutive360

What's next for Venezuelan Oil & Gas? Former Oil CEO & Hostage Tells The True Story of the CITGO 6.

In this episode of The Energy Executive 360 Podcast, we sit down with José Ángel Pereira, former President of CITGO Petroleum, to explore an extraordinary journey through Venezuela’s oil industry, executive leadership, nearly five years of captivity, and ultimately, resilience and rebuilding. A fourth-generation oil & gas professional, José spent more than three decades in the industry, experiencing PDVSA’s golden era, its transformation under Hugo Chávez, and its eventual decline before moving to the United States and eventually becoming President of CITGO Petroleum. But in November 2017, everything changed. José travelled from Houston to Caracas with five colleagues for what was supposed to be a routine business meeting. After completing their presentation, the six executives were suddenly accused of being American spies, handcuffed and taken into captivity. José would spend the next 10 months in solitary confinement and nearly five years away from his family, at one point losing around 100 pounds. José shares how the six executives developed a survival plan built around discipline, exercise, food, faith and collective leadership; how his son spent four years helping provide the food and support that kept him alive; and how he secretly smuggled letters to his wife from captivity that would eventually become his memoir. We also discuss the moment José was finally told “put your civil clothes on so that you're free,” the prisoner swap that brought him home, meeting his grandson for the first time, and how the experience completely transformed his understanding of family, faith, gratitude and what truly matters in life. Finally, José takes us back inside the Venezuelan oil industry and shares his perspective on what went wrong at PDVSA and what could come next for one of the world's largest oil & gas resource holders—including why he believes smaller and mid-sized companies could help drive a new wave of investment and potentially rebuild production. What You'll Learn: ⬛ How a routine business meeting turned into nearly five years of captivity ⬛ What happened when José and five CITGO executives were accused of being American spies ⬛ What 10 months in solitary confinement did to his sense of time⬛ How six oil executives created a structured plan to survive captivity ⬛ Why José says his son effectively dedicated four years of his life to keeping him alive ⬛ How he secretly smuggled letters to his wife that eventually became his memoir ⬛ The moment José finally heard the words: “You're free” ⬛ How meeting his grandson for the first time changed him ⬛ What José witnessed during the golden era and decline of PDVSA ⬛ Why firing more than 20,000 experienced workers changed Venezuela's oil industry ⬛ Why José believes Venezuela could significantly increase oil production over the coming years ⬛ Why smaller and mid-sized companies could play a major role in Venezuela's next energy chapter ⬛ What captivity taught José about resilience, leadership, faith, family and gratitude ⬛ Why reaching the top of your career means very little if you lose balance in the rest of your life Follow Jose Angel Pereira Ruimwyk: José’s LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jose-angel-pereira/ José’s Book — From Hero to Villain: Follow Emilio and The Energy Executive 360 Follow Emilio on all platforms: https://linktr.ee/EmilioFaulmata TEE360 Studio: https://www.emiliofaulmata.com #JoséÁngelPereira #CITGO #CITGO6 #Venezuela #OilAndGas #EnergyIndustry #Leadership #Resilience #PDVSA #EnergyLeadership #CEO #Podcast #TheEnergyExecutive360 #FutureLeaders

Oil Explorer: 90% Of Oil Wells Fail! Why We Built An Oil Company During The Anti-Oil Era...

In this episode of The Energy Executive 360 Podcast, we sit down with Ian Cloke, Co-Founder & COO of Afentra, to explore his extraordinary career in global oil & gas exploration — from getting lost in the jungles of Borneo as a PhD student to discovering billion-barrel oil basins across Africa. With more than 30 years of experience spanning companies including Conoco, Mobil, and Tullow Oil, Ian shares the highs, failures, uncertainty, and resilience required to survive in one of the highest-risk industries in the world. He takes us inside the reality of exploration drilling: the sleepless nights before wells, the pressure of making billion-dollar decisions with incomplete information, and the emotional rollercoaster of going from “hero to zero” — and back again — within days. Ian also reflects on the journey of building Afentra during one of the toughest periods in modern energy history. Launching the company in 2020 at the peak of anti-oil sentiment and low oil prices, he explains why he and the team believed the world still needed pragmatic, balanced energy thinking — and why Africa remains one of the biggest long-term opportunities in global energy. What you’ll learn: ⬛ The emotional reality of oil & gas exploration and discovery ⬛ Why resilience is the most important skill in the energy industry ⬛ Lessons from discovering over 1 billion barrels of oil in Uganda ⬛ The story behind Kenya’s first oil discovery ⬛ How intuition, science, and experience combine in high-stakes decision-making ⬛ Why exploration geologists must become comfortable with uncertainty ⬛ The dangers of bad decision-making during high oil-price environments ⬛ Building Afentra during the 2020 “peak green” anti-oil climate ⬛ Why the best opportunities are often where nobody else is looking ⬛ The future of Africa’s role in global energy markets ⬛ Why the energy transition must be about “and,” not “or” ⬛ The importance of secure, affordable, and balanced energy systems Follow Ian Cloke & Afentra LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-cloke...
