The Killing of an Asian Child | Nayantara Ali (1994)

In November 1994, 11-year-old Nayantara Ali left her home in East London and set off for school. She never reached the school gates. 25 days later, her naked body was discovered just 20 yards from her family home — wrapped in a bedsheet, concealed inside a piece of carpet and buried beneath rubble and debris. Even more disturbingly, police had already searched the exact location where her body was eventually found. In this episode of **Crimes That Haunt Us**, we examine the disappearance and murder of Nayantara Ali, reconstructing the final known movements of an innocent 11-year-old girl and exploring the unanswered questions that have surrounded her case for more than three decades. What happened to Nayan between leaving home and disappearing? Where was she held before her death? How did her body end up so close to her family home? And why was she apparently missed during earlier searches of the area? We examine the evidence surrounding the distinctive pea-green fitted sheet and unusual circular piece of pink carpet used to conceal her body, the police investigation, the family's concerns about the initial response, the wider community reaction, and the possibility that whoever disposed of Nayan's body knew the local area. Despite the passage of more than 30 years, nobody has been publicly identified, arrested or convicted for Nayantara's murder. Her school uniform, PE kit, umbrella and distinctive Take That bag have never been publicly recovered. The Metropolitan Police continue to regard the case as an open investigation. **Nayantara was just 11 years old. She deserved to grow up. She deserved a future. Most importantly, she deserved justice.** If you have information about Nayantara Ali's disappearance or murder, please contact the Metropolitan Police or Crimestoppers. --- **Crimes That Haunt Us** explores unsolved murders, disappearances and the cases that continue to haunt families and communities decades later. The Wendy Sewell Murder: Did Police Convict the Wrong Man?

On 12 September 1973, 32-year-old Wendy Sewell walked into Bakewell Cemetery to meet a man. Minutes later, she was the victim of a savage attack that would become one of Britain's most controversial murder cases. Within hours, 17-year-old cemetery groundsman Stephen Downing had been detained. Convicted of Wendy's murder in 1974, he spent 27 years behind bars before his conviction was dramatically quashed by the Court of Appeal. But the case didn't end there. Anonymous letters, forgotten witnesses, disputed forensic evidence and claims that Wendy was seen alive with another man after Downing had left the cemetery have continued to fuel debate for decades. In this documentary, we examine the complete chronology of the Wendy Sewell murder—from the events of September 1973 through the investigation, trial, appeals, Operation Noble and the questions that remain unanswered more than fifty years later. Who killed Wendy Sewell?
