No Crying In Baseball

Voxtopica

When Patti and her potty-mouthed friend talk baseball, you'll know this is not a baseball podcast for lightweights. This is the real deal, from real fans. Because diamonds are a strong woman's best friend, and there's no crying in baseball.

    Because, Midwest

Lovely humans. Yes it’s our first episode from the Epic Baseball Road Trip: CLE, DET, CHI edition. We give you the NCiB takes on Progressive Field, Comerica Park, and Wrigley Field. What are pierogi nachos, really? Yes we care that the bathrooms are just that good. No, in fact “good” beer is NOT available everywhere in the park. How far will Patti travel to execute a visual Hello Kitty/Detroit Tigers joke? Yes every single person in the entire midwest is pretty nice and the people working guest services are the people that should be working guest services. With the notable exception of JJ Wetherholt and Ivan Herrera, our current bfs were not playing or not playing well in front of your hosts. We were a day early for an historic CLE win, and a day late for Joshua Baez’s historic debut, but we were there for Bradgley Rodriguez’s first save.. And we apparently are a jinx (curse?) on the home teams. Wow Jake, 4 teams in 21 days? We recommend cross-training at LeBron James’ Buckets restaurant in Akron, and we can’t wait to get to Springfield this week to check on the HR race between Kelsie and Denae. Next week we’ll report back on MIL, the WPBL, and KC. Join our Patreon for the Daily Diary. We say, “ Pottymouth layered noise-cancelling things,” “the songs you know all the words to, therefore you can’t do math in your head,” and “2 for 2 on food we didn’t even know would come in helmets.” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Please take a moment to subscribe to the show, and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to NCiB. Become a supporter at Patreon to help us keep doing what we do. We now have episode transcripts available!  They are available for free at our Patreon site. Say goodnight, Pottymouth.

    Tiny Cups of Tequila

It’s really the only way to cope with the trade deadline. Lots to cover in this super-sized episode, only partly fueled by very delicious (organic!) tequila. The big news was supposed to be Tarik Skubal, for which Patti doesn’t fault the LAD, she faults everyone else. The gut punch was once and forever Adley to BOS, which sets up all sorts of interesting co-host dynamics for AL East games to come. But the rest of baseball continues – Nasim can’t stop stealing bases and Kaz stole his first. Ivan has more bruises than you’d expect and Daylen needs a lecture on what “old-school’ really means. Salvy is just the best. You can now use “ultimate grand slam” with confidence, and explain WRC+ to friends and family. Patti is ready to defend scooters as a component of multimodal transportation and not a “sport” to the Giants if necessary. Pottymouth welcomes the start of the inaugural WPBL season. Please read this piece on Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve – problematic but an excellent conversation starter. And one of your hosts finds the idea of push-up sushi in a ballpark pretty compelling. We say, “Chahge ya cah in Bah Hahbah,” “You can’t just randomly stop paying me because I was out on a scooter at 2am,” and “Transphobic with a Barbie smile.” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. A Practical Thing to Knock on When the Knocking Gets Tough

Yeah, well, our teams killed each other’s streaks so we’re moving on to the trade deadline. While the Mead/Early trade got things kicked off, the big target is Skubal. Grady and the Rays set a record for a HS draft pick, but sometimes a water gun will do. Salvy sets a Royals franchise record, Kaz sets a Japanese rookie record, and Drake does his job. Pottymouth talks about Caleb like Patti talked PCA last year. José goes to Broadway, Pookie and Kiké did not go to the White House. Johan Sandoval talks about his very real ICE arrest because of paperwork. The US Women roll through the Women’s Baseball World Cup group round. And Tori Penso, one of six women referees in the just-concluded Men’s World Cup reminds girls and women to “‘Put your shoulders up. Take up space. Own the moment.’” We say, “He put his face on a can of beer and now I’m going to drink that can of beer.” “It’s already a little f*c&ed  an then it’ll be a lot f*c&ed,” and, “Nick Kurtz, Nick hurts, Nick not hurts?” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. We’ve got Hot and We’ve got Interesting

That described the two longest active winning streaks and coincidentally our two favorite teams, one of which was going down shortly after recording. More wood was knocked upon. Patti’s got two players of the week on her boyfriend roster, congrats to Drake and WIlyer. Several of our guys made their marks in some very lopsided games this weekend. Pottymouth learns that SDI is not what it was in our formative years but Caleb’s got a good one. We’ve got some All Star moments, including mathing out Cuban participation. Women’s World Cup Baseball group states are about to begin, coinciding with Baseball for All in Rockford. MLPBA and the league tell very different stories about the state of baseball as bargaining continues. SoFi stadium workers benefit from Men’s World Cup timing to gain protections against ICE. As predicted last week, Falklands/Malvinas are a thing, and a thing about which journalists are getting sloppy, and about which the Facist-in Chief is making more phone calls for all the wrong reasons. And we’re so happy for Jonah, the Very Good Dog, who did indeed get his dream day at loanDepot park. We say, “11 is purple,” “Where the women at?” and, ”Philly fans do not disappoint.” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. How Have You Not Knocked on Wood?

Everyone knows you can’t  just talk about a streak without following it up with a protective action. Sure, you all know how the Home Run Derby turned out but we recorded the day before so you get the joy of our terrible predictions. We have some do it for Venezuela, some home field advantage, and our thoughts on dads pitching. We ponder how ASG replacements actually work because it sure is not one for one. Willson and Ivan are in, Nick is out. JJ signs a monster contract extension, Kaz ties Shohei,. Pottymouth starts paying attention to Jonathan Aranda. Venezuelan Eduardo Valencia finally gets his call up but his thoughts are of home. The WPBL finally announces the names for the four inaugural teams, all based on women trailblazers from each city. While you were looking elsewhere, Johan Sandoval, Dominican college student and baseball player, was abducted by ICE. We’re almost done crosstraining with the Men’s World Cup but at least we get to mention Vikings. We say, “Pottymouths would have been a great team name,” “the whole Falklands/Malvinas thing,” and, “I wonder how many Erling Harlands are going to be in his kindergarten class?” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Is Throwing a Helmet Worse Than Throwing a Slur?

Pottymouth does not disappoint bringing you the Cavalli-Contreras rant you’ve been waiting for. Putting it firmly in the larger context of the devastating earthquake in Venezuela, Contreras’ home country, we walk through the “brush,” the slur that came awfully easily to Cavalli, and the ensuing fracas (not a picnic, not a brawl). There’s yet another teaching moment about an apology that really isn’t. And the inequitable aftermath. Back to that larger context, “baseball” is rallying around earthquake recovery, from team-level fundraising to actions by individual players, and smaller, incredibly heartfelt moments that mean everything. Congrats to current BFs Drake Baldwin and Nick Kurtz for being named starters at this year’s ASG, and to Sal Stewart and once and forever bf Adley Rutschman for making the reserves. Patti catches you up on collective bargaining with MLB owners moving money around in a smaller box and the MLBPA looking to eliminate shenanigans with stashing players in the minors to save a few bucks. We crosstrain with the Men’s World Cup and the infamous Red Card, and the fascist in chief’s inability to stay in his lane. And lastly we enjoy the irony of staff from “Guiness” (not that one) ruling on a world record glass of “beer” (It’s Bud so it starts in quotes) outside of Globe Life Field. Patti still wants to know what happened to the 600 gallons sitting in the Texas sun for hours… ARI celebrated with apple pie nachos, and WAS with a red white and blue Liberty shake, but all any other teams could manage was throwing words like “all american” and “firecracker” in front of standard concessions. But at least our homes shook during the midnight fireworks in your nation’s capital, as if we were under attack. We say, “Halle-f*!@n-luya,”Nothing says America 250 like a giant Budweiser,” and “cross-train with criticizing the government.” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com. Which Fans Don’t You Want?

That’s the question posed by Kurt Weaver, the Executive Director of You Can Play, regarding how Pride events are handled in sports.  Read more here, after the finger pointing, the absence of leadership, and the spin. The deadly earthquakes in Venezuela hit the baseball world hard. Venezuelan players in MLB played through the pain, and wore their hearts on their caps. Current and former players are rolling up their sleeves and organizing relief efforts to augment the donations from MLBPA Trust and individual teams. The LMBP season is suspended and Venezuelans just keep taking hits. The Men’s World Cup brings us an unlikely Pride Night with Egypt vs Iran where you can bring your own rainbow but not pre-revolutionary flags. Bosnia fans chant “Free Palestine” and we cheer for family making it through the immigration hoops. But FIFA is not political. In regularly scheduled MLB action, Pete gets to 500, Kyle gets to Pottymouth’s Posse, Jac gets back to Tampa, and Willson gets to hate on the Yankees. There is a Very Good Dog in Miami. We say “shirtless man aspect to Pride activities.” “I fought the wall and the wall won,” and “Even the bigots are saying you guys are wrong.” Fight the man, go see some live baseball, send your game balls to Meredith, and find us on Bluesky @ncibpodcast, on Facebook @nocryinginbball, Instagram @nocryinginbball and on the Interweb at nocryinginbball.com.
