ALLEY CAT w/ Venus Blacklaws: 26th June, 2026

Venus Blacklaws is a Tāmaki-based transdisciplinary artist working across painting, performance, costume design, sculpture, and installation, and is also a member of Tāmaki-based artist collective, The Killing. Blacklaws practice seeks to navigate ideas around the mutability of the body, and illusions of self. Drawing from surrealism and drag conventions to unravel and re-present narratives of sex, gender, mythology and transformation into a single embodied language.  Their current show at Plomacy, ALLEY CAT delves into Blacklaws' painting practice. Presenting a series of paintings that circulate notions of remembering through articulations of the feline and feral. Employing the feline as a vehicle for communication, in which its liminal body can exist and seep between these ephemeral spaces. Here, the feline is placed amongst these abstracted fields enriched in various painterly applications. Drips of paint running down the canvas, a building up of translucent layers meet with robust smears of paint. A lively vocabulary of paint that builds up into these alternative worlds that seep out into the gallery space itself. Expanding the confinements of the frame, while also navigating the fluxing dissolution of figure and field. Exploring these themes of displacement through archetypes of the stray, reimanging grief as something atmospheric and energetic.  Maya caught up with Venus about the show and their overall practice.
