Unlearning Beautiful

Kristina Bruce

For most of us, “beautiful” has meant thin, youthful, glowing, and effortlessly put-together — a look we’ve been taught to believe makes us valuable and worthy.  But what if beautiful isn’t about being thin or looking young — but a feeling you experience inside, and already are? Unlearning Beautiful is for women who are tired of worrying about their jean size, fighting the signs of aging, or trying to get everything “right” in the name of health — and are ready to feel genuinely well, at ease, and beautiful from the inside out. Through honest reflections, practical wisdom, and gentle guidance, host and certified coach Kristina Bruce helps you heal your relationship with your body, release appearance-based pressure, and reconnect to the deeper sense of worth that’s always been within you. Because the freedom you’re craving was never in how you look. Kristina Bruce is a Certified Change Coach with training in yoga and meditation, and education in health studies and sociology. Ep. 36 Why You Feel the Need to “Make Up” for Eating—and Punish Yourself

You eat more than you intended, and almost immediately your mind starts figuring out how you're going to “make up” for it. Maybe you'll eat less tomorrow. Skip breakfast. Exercise more. Be “good” for the rest of the week. But what's actually behind that urge to punish yourself? In this episode of Unlearning Beautiful, I explore the deeper belief underneath food guilt, restriction, and compensation: the idea that when we've done something “bad,” we need to punish ourselves to correct it and become “good” again. I look at how we learn this good/bad framework early in life, how we eventually internalize it, and how it gets applied to food, exercise, our bodies—and so many other areas of our lives. Because this isn't just about eating. The same pattern can show up when we feel we're not productive enough, we're not a good enough parent or partner, we've made a mistake, or we've somehow fallen short. What if instead of immediately turning to shame, guilt, and punishment, we became curious? What happened? What was going on? What were we feeling or needing? What can we understand and learn from this? I explores why understanding—not self-punishment—is what allows us to actually take responsibility, grow, and make different choices. And ultimately, this work isn't just about making peace with your body. It's about making peace with being human. Ep. 35 Why You Can't Stop Hating Your Body (and the 3 Steps That Change Everything)

Do you ever feel like criticizing your body happens automatically? You catch your reflection, see a photo of yourself, or put on a pair of jeans—and before you even realize it, your mind is telling you everything that's "wrong." What if those thoughts aren't the truth? What if they're simply a habit? In this episode, I explore why body hate can feel so automatic, where these thoughts come from, and why trying to replace them with positive thoughts often doesn't work. Instead, I'll walk you through three simple practices that help you loosen your attachment to these thoughts so they begin to lose their power. In this episode, you'll learn: Why negative body thoughts feel so convincingHow beauty standards become deeply conditioned beliefsThe difference between you and the thoughts you're experiencingThree practical steps to begin breaking the habit of body criticismWhy lasting body peace comes from changing your relationship to your thoughts—not forcing yourself to think positively If you're exhausted from the constant mental chatter about your appearance, this episode will offer a different perspective—one rooted in awareness, self-compassion, and freedom. 🕊️ Ready for personalized support? Ep. 34 Your Child's Body Image: The Most Important Thing You Can Do

Has your child ever said... "I'm fat." "I'm ugly." "I don't like my body." If you're like most parents, your first thought is probably: "What do I say?" But what if helping your child build a healthy relationship with their body has less to do with finding the perfect words... and more to do with healing your own relationship with yours? In this episode of the Unlearning Beautiful Podcast, we're talking about how your own body image, beliefs, and emotional reactions shape the way you show up for your child—and why becoming a safe place for them to explore their feelings may be far more powerful than having the "right" response. If this episode helps you realize that your own relationship with your body may be the greatest gift you can give your child, this is exactly the work I help women do: 🕊️ 1:1 Body Peace Coaching Personalized support to help you stop obsessing about your body and feel more peace, trust, and freedom.  https://www.kristinabruce.com/private-coaching 📕 Free Guide to Body Peace: For women done with "fixing" their bodies, and ready to feel free https://www.kristinabruce.com/guide In this episode, you'll learn:Why children aren't born hating their bodies—and where those beliefs come from. What to do when your child says, "I'm fat" or makes negative comments about their appearance. Why trying to reassure or "fix" your child can unintentionally shut down the conversation. The power of curiosity over correction. How your own relationship with your body influences your child's.Why your child doesn't need a perfect parent—they need a safe place to bring their questions. How healing your own body image can help break generational cycles of body shame. If you've been searching for ways to raise a body-confident child, support your child's self-esteem, or help them develop a healthier relationship with food and their body, I hope this episode reminds you that you don't have to do it perfectly. Ep. 32 Unscripted with Kristina & Stefanie #2: GLP-1s, Body Acceptance, and Choosing Our Path

Can you work toward body acceptance while considering a GLP-1 medication? What happens when you've spent years healing your relationship with food and your body, only to watch the world around you embrace weight loss again? In this second edition of Unscripted with Kristina & Stefanie, body image coaches Kristina Bruce of Unlearning Beautiful and Stefanie Michele of Full But Not Finished sit down with no notes, no agenda, and no script to explore one of the biggest conversations happening in the body image space today. Together, they discuss GLP-1 medications, body acceptance, intuitive eating, anti-diet thinking, weight loss, body image anxiety, and the fear of making the "wrong" choice. For people who have spent years trying to heal their relationship with food and their bodies, the decision isn't always simple. When people around you appear to be shrinking, does choosing not to pursue weight loss still feel aligned? Or does it begin to feel as though you may be turning away from an easier path? Kristina and Stefanie explore the pressure that exists on both sides of the GLP-1 conversation. They discuss what happens when dieting—or even anti-diet thinking—becomes a fixed belief system, why body trust can't be reduced to one universally correct decision, and how confusing self-care can become after years of equating it with self-control. They also explore what sits beneath the decision: our attachment to the body, identity, or future we imagined for ourselves, and what happens when certainty can no longer tell us which direction to take. Whether you're considering a GLP-1 medication, questioning your relationship with your body, or simply trying to find your own way through the noise, this conversation offers space for curiosity rather than certainty. Kristina and Stefanie both offer individualized coaching for people who feel consumed by body image, food, weight, control, or the pressure to make the "right" decision about their bodies. Ep. 31 What Grief Taught Me About Body Peace

Grief has a way of revealing what we're most attached to. In this episode, I share what a recent season of grief has been teaching me—not just about loss, but about the stories our minds create, the identities we cling to, and why these same patterns show up in our relationship with our bodies. As I move through my own grieving process, I realized something that changed the way I think about healing: grief itself isn't the same as suffering. More often than not, it's the stories we tell ourselves about what our loss means that create the deepest pain. In this episode, we explore: • Why grief is a natural and necessary part of letting go • The difference between grief and suffering • How the mind creates stories that keep us stuck • Why body changes can feel so painful • What it means to find body peace through presence, self-trust, and letting go If you've ever struggled with change—whether in your body or your life—I hope this conversation leaves you feeling a little more grounded, a little more present, and a little more at peace. 🕊️ Download my free Guide to Body Peace: For women done with "fixing" their bodies - and ready to feel free https://www.kristinabruce.com/guide Connect with me: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kristinabrucecoach Website: www.kristinabruce.com This podcast is for educational and informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical or mental health advice.

Ep. 29 What a Former Model Learned About Beauty, Validation & Self-Worth (with Bridgett Brown)

Former model and Beyond Beauty Project founder Bridgett Burrick joins me for a powerful conversation about beauty standards, body image, and what she learned from years spent inside the modeling industry. While Bridgett never entered modeling in pursuit of validation, her experience gave her a front-row seat to the pressures, expectations, and impossible standards that shape how many women relate to their bodies. Together, we explore the disconnect that can happen when appearance becomes the focus, why external beauty doesn't automatically create confidence, and how reconnecting with your body can transform the way you see yourself. In this episode, we discuss: • Bridgett's journey from international model to founder of the Beyond Beauty Project • What life inside the modeling industry is really like • The beauty standards that encourage women to view themselves from the outside in • Why appearance-focused living can create disconnection from the body • The difference between controlling your body and being in relationship with it • How grief, loss, and motherhood transformed Bridgett's perspective on beauty • Expanding our definition of beauty beyond appearance • Embodiment, self-trust, and learning to listen to your body's wisdom CONNECT WITH BRIDGETT: Website: https://www.beyondbeautyproject.com Substack: https://substack.com/@beyondbeautyproject Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beyond.beauty.project 1:1 Coaching: https://www.beyondbeautyproject.com/1-1-coaching Dear Body Collection: https://www.beyondbeautyproject.com/dear-body-collection  WORK WITH KRISTINA 🕊️ 1:1 Body Peace Coaching Personalized support to help you stop obsessing about your body and feel more peace, trust, and freedom.  👉https://www.kristinabruce.com/private-coaching OTHER RESOURCES 📕 Free Guide to Body Peace:  https://www.kristinabruce.com/guide 🌱Body Peace Video Series: https://www.kristinabruce.com/bodypeace-podcast  💗 Small Group Coaching:  https://kristina-bruce.kit.com/group-interest CONNECT WITH KRISTINA 🌐 Website: https://www.kristinabruce.com/ 📱 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kristinabrucecoach This podcast is for educational and informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical or mental health advice.
