    S1 EP2 - Mère Gabrielle | مير غبريال

“Can the fighting start already so school can close?” For children, school is meant to serve as a safe space, like a second home, where they go to learn, play and nurture friendships. A space that builds towards their future. But war changes everything. What was once a safe space, can no longer protect them. With education disrupted and their playgrounds destroyed, what does it mean to be a student in times of war? To have chaos and disorder crossover inside the boundaries of your own school? To see your friends carrying guns and grenades to class? To have your exam postponed many times over because of fighting? War forces people to improvise, to adapt quickly, and for these children, sometimes that meant dropping out of school and joining the fighting.Disclaimer: The story told from 17:10 to 17:58 did in fact take place in 2008 and has been included by mistake, though it does testify to the repeating cycle of violence.Maabar is a podcast created produced by Anthony Tawil and Cedric Kayem, in partnership with forumZFD.For the full list of credits, visit www.maabarpodcast.com/credit-------------------------------------------------------------------- All images are property of their owners and are used with permission. Classic Chats: Robert Harris on ‘Agrippa’

Mary and Charlotte talk to best-selling author Robert Harris about his new novel ‘Agrippa’. Robert Harris has published 16 novels, of which nine have been made into films, including The Ghost Writer, Enigma and the Oscar-winning papal thriller Conclave. Five of Robert’s novels are set in Ancient Rome: the Cicero Trilogy, Pompeii and Agrippa.  Robert discovered Agrippa while researching the Cicero Trilogy and became increasingly interested in this decisive, but largely forgotten figure, whose legacy is everywhere in Ancient Rome. He describes what interested him in the story: the friendship between the aristocratic Augustus and his plebeian sidekick, and the tension that inevitably developed between the two. He compares Augustus and Agrippa to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, only with higher stakes.  Further reading: We covered the history of this period in the last episode, with further reading in the shownotes. If you haven’t read Robert’s other Roman novels, they are all available in paperback: Pompeii (Arrow pb, 2009) (A younger Mary Beard “fact-checked for the hard-back version of this – though didn’t find many mistakes!) The Cicero Trilogy, Imperium, Lustrum and Dictator (Arrow pb, 2009, 2010, 2016) Aprippa is published in hardback by Hutchinson Heinemann, 27 August, 2026 @instaclassicpod for Insta, TikTok and YouTube@insta_classics for Xemail: instantclassicspod@gmail.com Instant Classics handmade by Vespucci Producer: Jonty Claypole  Video Editor: Jak Ford Theme music: Casey Gibson Learn more about your ad choices. Simon Sebag Montefiore: How the Modern Middle East Was Made

In this Conflicted Conversation, Simon Sebag Montefiore returns to the show, this time to talk about his new book The Cauldron: The Making of the Modern Middle East. Simon explains: How Britain and France tried — and often failed — to shape the post-Ottoman Middle East Why Sykes–Picot is a misleading shorthand for the region’s modern borders How Atatürk, Nasser and other Middle Eastern leaders remade the region through their own choices The violent shift from Ottoman pluralism to nationalist, more homogeneous states Why Nasser’s charisma produced a powerful Arab myth but a disastrous authoritarian model Why traditional monarchies in Morocco, Jordan and the Gulf often outlasted revolutionary republics How America became the Middle East’s dominant anti-imperial imperial power after Europe’s retreat Why militias, parastates and insurgencies make “total victory” in today’s Middle East so elusive Find Simon on X: x.com/simonmontefiore Visit Simon’s website: www.simonsebagmontefiore.com Join the Conflicted Community here: https://conflicted.supportingcast.fm/ Find us on X: https://x.com/MHconflicted And Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MHconflicted And Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/conflictedpod Learn more about your ad choices. And be sure to check us out on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/haviv.rettig.gur/) and TikTok (https://www.tiktok.com/@haviv.rettig.gur). -- Why does the West misunderstand the Middle East? Best-selling historian Simon Sebag Montefiore returns to the pod to discuss The Cauldron, his sweeping new history of the region, from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and the birth of its modern states to oil, Islamism, revolution and the Arab Spring. The book is a kind of prehistory of present-day Western stumbling in the Middle East. Western powers repeatedly arrive with grand political theories — imperialism, nationalism, socialism, liberal democracy — only to watch them change beyond recognition or collapse on contact with the region’s deeper identities, loyalties and social contracts. It is a conversation about the states that endured, the ones that failed, and why the Middle East remains so intensely debated in the West — and so poorly understood. -- This episode is sponsored by the Technion.

The Galloway Hoard

On today's show, we are chatting about three of my favourite things: Scotland, Vikings & Treasure! From the origins of Vikings in the British Isles to the discovery of the Galloway Hoard, which we were lucky enough to go and see first-hand, we're travelling through time today to look at the mix of cultures and religion which dominated Viking-era Scotland!  Thank you so much to the Australian National Maritime Museum for making this episode of Hot History possible - head to sea.museum for 10% off your tickets to see the Galloway Hoard while it's in Sydney until October 11. Shout out to our incredible researcher Grace McCamish for pulling this together, and to Inger Shiel for chatting with us.
