Why did it take so long for the U.S. to pick its national anthem?

It’s super common for a country to have a national anthem. That’s an official song that is sung at special events and is supposed to bring people together. The United States of America’s anthem is called The Star Spangled Banner. But it took a long time, and a lot of contests, to choose that song. Join Joy and co-host Freya as they learn the history of this famously hard to sing song. Plus they tackle an all new First Things First. Guest: Billy Coleman, Associate Director of the Kinder Institute, and historian who studies early American music and politics. Click here to read a transcript of this episode. Why do British people love tea? (from Here For The History)

Where exactly does the British love affair with tea begin? It all starts with a Portuguese princess… In this first episode of Here For The History, Alice Loxton and Ben Henderson explore the origin story of the British love of tea. Starting with the first appearance of tea in England in the 1600s and its popularisation in the English royal court, the story takes a dark turn as the British East India Company seeks to break China’s monopoly on tea production leading to the Opium Wars and corporate espionage. Here For The History is a new BBC Sounds podcast where every week historians Alice Loxton and Ben Henderson will shed light on the stereotypes, social norms, traditions and beliefs that fill our everyday life. From Britain’s stiff upper-lip, to Scottish tartan, the podcast will reveal the surprising roots of the customs and everyday objects that surround us. If you enjoy this episode, you can listen and subscribe to Here For The History on BBC Sounds. If you’re outside the UK, you can listen on BBC.com or wherever you get your podcasts. Fall Asleep as a WWII Radio Operator Crossing the Atlantic

Get early episodes & ad-free audio on Patreon: https://patreon.com/DrowsyHistorian Tonight, you leave the harbor behind and step into the warm glow of a merchant ship's radio room as you cross the Atlantic during World War II. Surrounded by vacuum tubes, logbooks, and the endless whisper of static, your job is simple but vital. You listen. Through long watches beneath blackout skies, through fog banks that swallow the horizon, and through storms that shake the steel hull beneath your feet, messages drift across the darkness from distant ships and unseen coastlines. This is the quieter side of the Battle of the Atlantic. Not the admirals, captains, or famous battles, but the radio operators who spent their nights listening for weather reports, convoy instructions, warnings, and the occasional distress signal emerging from the noise. Settle in for a slow and atmospheric journey across the ocean as routine, patience, and unseen connections carry you from one horizon to the next. 🛏️ Drowsy Historian’s Favorite Sleep Tools Looking to upgrade your nighttime routine? Blood

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss blood. For more than 1500 years popular imagination, western science and the Christian Church colluded in a belief that blood was the link between the human and the divine. The Greek physician, Galen, declared that it was blood that contained the force of life and linked the body to the soul, the Christian Church established The Eucharist – the taking of the body and blood of Christ. In our blood was our individuality, it was thought, our essence and our blood lines were special. Transfusion threatened all that and now itself is being questioned. Why is it that blood was used to define both man and messiah? And how has the tradition of blood in religious thought been affected by the progress of medicine? With Miri Rubin, Professor of European History at Queen Mary, University of London; Dr Anne Hardy, Reader in the History of Medicine at the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London; Jonathan Sawday, Professor of English Studies at the University of Strathclyde.
