  • Can You Turn What You Love Into a Real Business? (Krissy Cela, founder of Oner Active)

Can You Turn What You Love Into a Real Business? (Krissy Cela, founder of Oner Active)

Emma sits down with Krissy Cela, founder and creative director of Oner Active, for an honest conversation about building a bootstrapped business on track to generate close to $300 million this year. Before Oner, Krissy spent a decade building a fitness audience and business from a student laptop, long before either was considered a conventional career path. Today, she owns 50 percent of one of the fastest-growing brands in the category.  But what happens when your life asks you to become someone you don’t yet feel qualified to be, and people still look for reasons not to credit your success to you? This episode is about starting before you feel ready, letting go of the need to prove yourself, and growing into the leader your business requires. In this episode, Krissy shares: Why feeling underqualified should not stop you from building something bigHow she turned an online audience into a loyal customer communityThe early legal and partnership mistakes that shapes how she operates todayHow people-pleasing weakened her leadership, and what changed since she stoppedWhy the ones who doubt you are rarely the ones who end up matteringFor more, subscribe to our weekly newsletter at emmagrede.com.

#430 How to Write Ads That Sell

Claude Hopkins was the greatest copywriter of all time. His ideas were so valuable that when he wrote them down in a book the founder of his advertising firm locked the manuscript in a safe for 20 years. When the book was finally published it sold over 8 million copies. David Ogilvy said that nobody should work in advertising until they had read the book seven times. This episode is what I learned by reading Claude Hopkins' autobiography My Life In Advertising and his legendary book Scientific Advertising. Made possible by: Ramp: https://ramp.com Applovin: https://www.applovin.com Vanta: https://vanta.com/founders Some of my favorite quotes: 0:00 — "Any man who by a lifetime of excessive application learns more about anything than others owes a statement to his successors." 5:12 — "The man who works twice as long as his fellows is bound to go twice as far, especially in advertising." 5:30 — "If I have gone higher than others in advertising or done more, the fact is not due to exceptional ability but to exceptional hours." 6:48 — "To poverty I owe the fact that I never went to college. I spent those four years in the school of experience instead of the school of theory." 9:08 — "Which is work and which is play? If a thing is useful, they call it work. If it's useless, they call it play. But one is hard as the other. All the difference I see lies in the attitude of the mind." 9:32 — "I came to love work as other men love golf. I love it still. The love of work can be cultivated just like the love of play." 9:58 — "We do best what we like best." 13:05 — "A good product is its own best salesman. It is uphill work to sell goods without samples." 15:00 — "We must never judge humanity by ourselves. The things we want, the things we like may appeal to a small minority." 15:23 — "We must submit all things in advertising to the court of public opinion." 17:48 — "Some of the greatest successes I have ever known in advertising were ignorant men. One wrote copy which would induce a farmer to mortgage his barn to respond, but every sentence had to be edited for grammar." 20:23 — "John Powers created a new concept of advertising. He told the truth, but told it in a rugged and fascinating way." 25:47 — "Study salesmen, canvassers, and fakers if you want to know how to sell goods. No argument in the world can ever compare with one dramatic demonstration." 26:35 — "The average salesman seeks favors. He seeks profit for himself. His plea is, 'Buy my goods.' He makes a selfish appeal to selfish people, and of course, he meets resistance. I was selling service." 28:45 — "We must treat people in advertising as we treat them in person." 31:23 — "Others have never told this story. It will startle everyone in print. I gave purity a meaning." (On Schlitz Beer jumping from 5th to 1st.) 32:03 — "Tell the pains that you take to excel. The maker is too close to his product. He sees in his methods only the ordinary." 34:08 — "The greatest two faults in advertising lie in boasts and in selfishness. People will listen if you talk service to them. They will turn their backs when you seek to impress an advantage for yourself." 41:23 — "People will do anything to cure a trouble, but little to prevent it. Prevention offers slight appeal to humanity in general. They want to be told of rewards." 1:01:30 — "Genius is the art of taking pains. The advertising man who spares the midnight oil will never get very far. This is no lazy man's field."

Risk, Ego, and Identity: Why This 16-Year-Old Dropped Out to Build Two Businesses

In this powerful debut episode of Talk2B, we sit down with 16-year-old Australian entrepreneur Hew Caffin, a high school dropout who’s already building two businesses from the ground up. But this episode goes far deeper than just business. Hew opens up about the emotional and financial risks he’s taken—leaving school behind, quitting a $500/day construction job, and waking up at 4:45 AM to chase purpose. He shares how reading, writing, and carefully choosing the people around him have shaped his mindset at a young age. With unfiltered honesty, he challenges the definition of entrepreneurship, explores the role of ego in ambition, and reflects on why identity matters more than any one path to success. Join hosts Bach, Jennifer, and Michael as they uncover the raw truth behind what it really means to grow up fast, take risks early, and build a life that’s completely your own.

    400. Why your life is f*cked

Why your life feels stuck (and it's not what you think it is) If you're unhappy, broke, or stuck in a loop, there's usually one root cause. You've replaced real risk with proxies. A proxy is a substitute that gives you the feeling of something without any of the risk it takes to actually earn it. Video games are a proxy for a career. They give you rank, progress, competition, status. Everything a real career gives you, minus the risk. Streamers and YouTubers are a proxy for friendship. You feel connected to someone for five minutes with none of the risk that real friendship takes. Porn is a proxy for a relationship. Same dopamine hit, zero courage required. Here's the problem. None of it actually satisfies you, because your brain knows you took no risk to get it. And the things that make us feel fulfilled, a real career, a real relationship, real friends, only mean something because they're hard to get. I lived this. I was there at 17, 18, 19. I fixed it by removing the proxies and forcing myself to take the risks I'd been avoiding. That's the entire story of how I went from a f****d life to an unfair one. I break the whole thing down, including the practical steps to actually remove these proxies without your life falling apart in the process, in this video. Watch here - https://youtu.be/Lu0AbbMb668

Ralph Lauren CEO Patrice Louvet on magic, logic, and saying no

Patrice Louvet says Ralph Lauren left about $1 billion in revenue on the table as it pulled back from places where, “frankly, we weren’t proud of being.” When he became CEO in 2017, the company had stretched its brand too far. His challenge was to restore the brand without compromising the creative “magic” that made Ralph Lauren distinctive. After nearly three decades at Procter & Gamble, Louvet came from a world of data, structure and business logic. At Ralph Lauren, he had to learn when the numbers should lead and when they should follow the magic. Defining the company as being in the “dreams business” became the foundation for deciding where the brand belonged, what it should stop doing and how it could grow without losing what made it special. Today, Ralph Lauren has no shortage of opportunities to expand — including into hotels, Louvet says. The challenge is no longer finding new avenues for growth, but knowing which ones to pursue without repeating the gradual dilution that weakened the brand before. For Louvet, that comes down to a deceptively simple principle: knowing what you can do is not the same as knowing what you should do. About the Show The CEO Signal is Semafor's interview platform for conversations with the global CEOs whose decisions are shaping the future of the new world economy.
