Inside The Second International AI Safety Report with Writers Stephen Clare and Stephen Casper

The second International AI Safety Report, released on February 3, brings together insights from over 100 AI experts across 30 countries to assess the current state of frontier AI systems. The report examines advanced models' capabilities, the risks they pose, and the technical and governance measures needed to ensure their safe development and deployment.  In this episode of the AI Policy Podcast, Wadhwani AI Center senior adviser Gregory C. Allen is joined by lead writer Stephen Clare and MIT Ph.D. student Stephen Casper, who authored the section on technical safeguards. They discuss how the latest Safety Report compares to the first edition published last year, explore the Report’s findings on technical safeguards, and unpack the document’s key policy implications.

Jonathan Haidt, social psychologist: We're at a tipping point for kids and technology

"There is a public health disaster. There is an education disaster. It all can be traced to the same cause, which is the change technology has made in our kids' childhood." Amol Rajan speaks to the American social psychologist Jonathan Haidt. In 2024 his book The Anxious Generation sparked a fierce debate about the impact of social media and technology on young people. Haidt believes it's behind the soaring number of mental health problems but social media companies claim this oversimplifies a deeply complex issue. Now he says we are at a tipping point in our relationship with technology, with countries moving towards much greater regulation of social media use for children. Thank you to the Radical team for its help in making this programme. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The best interviews from the BBC, including episodes with Microsoft AI boss Mustafa Suleyman and Annika Wells, the minister in charge of Australia's social media ban for under-16s. You can listen on the BBC World Service on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 0800 GMT. Or you can listen to The Interview as a podcast, out three times a week on BBC Sounds or wherever you get your podcasts. Working together: Partnerships for Impact

In development, big wins come from working together — building trust, sharing expertise, and bringing the right partners to the table. In this episode of The Development Podcast, we explore why partnerships matter — from the teamwork and great duos we see in sport, to the coalitions needed to deliver results at scale. We look at potential from a partnership with Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University (AAMU) — a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) and an 1890 land-grant institution with a long tradition of practical, community-focused problem-solving — and how AAMU’s expertise can connect to global development priorities, including Mission 300 and AgriConnect. Join us as we hear from: Ambassador Roya Rahmani, Director, Global Engagement, World Bank Group; Dr. Daniel K. Wims, President, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University; Ajay Banga, President, World Bank Group; and S.L. Price, sports journalist and author of The American Game: History and Hope in the Country of Lacrosse. Everything Connected: Building Systems to Create Jobs

Job creation is the north star for the World Bank Group. But how can we go about it in a way that has a truly catalytic impact? Impact in the sense of generating large numbers of jobs in a sustained way. The answer is to build ecosystems, where all elements interact and support each other.   In this episode of The Development Podcast, we get into the nuts and bolts of building jobs ecosystems.  We unpack AgriConnect, a new initiative to transform small-scale farming into an engine of sustainable growth, jobs, and food security, and we discuss how technical innovations including “small-AI” can help make this vision a reality.  Join us as we hear from: Ajay Banga, President, World Bank Group; Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Nigeria; Rania Al-Mashat, Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, Egypt; Bhaskar Chakravorti, Dean of Global Business, Fletcher School, Tufts University; Nidhi Pant, Co-founder of S4S Technologies; Chege Kirundi, Chairman of Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) Holdings Ltd and Mufasa, poet, actor, writer and teaching artist from Kenya Timestamps[00:00] Building ecosystems around job creation [03:43] Creating jobs through tourism in Egypt [05:53] The role of connectivity in Nigeria [10:19] What is small AI and why does it matter? What Do Shifting Demographics Mean For Future Development?

The world's population growth tells two stories: in many countries populations are aging, while in others, populations are getting younger. Projections show most countries will likely see shrinking populations within the next 25 years due to historically low fertility rates. But the African continent is bucking this trend. It has the potential to benefit from a demographic dividend: an opportunity for rapid economic growth driven by a large, youthful population. But that is with the right combination of policies and technical support). In this episode of The Development Podcast, we get to grips with what the data tell us,  and what this means for development. Join us as we hear from: Craig Hammer, Manager, Office of the Chief Statistician & Development Data Group, World Bank Group, Sarah Hague, Regional Advisor Social Policy, East and Southern Africa, UNICEF, Juyoung Yang, Economist, Department of Macroeconomic and Financial Policies, Korea Development Institute, Katia Osei, Head of Environmental Justice, The Or Foundation, Ghana. CONTESTED GROUND: Maritime competition drives need for an Australian Coast Guard, with Jennifer Parker

In this episode of the Contested Ground podcast, special host Steve Kuper is joined by Jennifer Parker, expert associate at the National Security College, Australian National University and a former Navy officer, to discuss the growing need for an Australian Coast Guard. The pair discuss the mounting level of hybrid and grey zone warfare in the maritime commons and economic exclusion zones across the Indo-Pacific and Southeast Asia, which has prompted a radical shift among regional nations seeking to secure their maritime interests. The pair also discuss: The impact on the naval surface fleet as it is increasingly called upon to engage in maritime border patrol and security missions across Australia's vast maritime area of responsibility. The regional trend towards establishing a formalised Coast Guard to ease the burden on regional navies and a variety of models available for Australian consideration. The history of Australia's push towards developing a Coast Guard and the opportunity to provide an additional contributing capability for national security in the event of conflict in the region. Episode 18: Diplomacy on the High Wire: The Distinguished Career of Ambassador Christopher R. Hill

The Honorable Christopher R. Hill had a distinguished career at the U.S. Department of State, serving as a five-time ambassador and diplomat at the center of some of the most consequential challenges in American foreign policy. Over three decades in the Foreign Service, which he joined in 1977, Ambassador Hill's career propelled him into high-stakes negotiations with some of America’s most intractable adversaries, from helping lead negotiations in the 1990s that ended the war in Bosnia to serving as the senior U.S. negotiator to the Six Party Talks, which sought to end North Korea’s nuclear weapons program in the mid-2000s. In 2009 and 2010, Ambassador Hill led the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad as the United States wound down its combat mission in Iraq, and in March 2022, the Senate confirmed Ambassador Hill for a fifth time to a U.S. posting abroad, this time to serve as ambassador to Serbia mere weeks after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This followed a period when he served as Dean of the University of Denver’s Josef Korbel School of International Studies, where he wrote The Outpost: A Diplomat at Work. He joins The Debrief to reflect on his distinguished diplomatic career after delivering the 2025 convocation address at the U.S. Naval War College.
