What New CEOs Get Wrong About the Job

Becoming CEO can look like the culmination of a career. But the skills that help someone rise to the top job aren't necessarily the ones that make them successful once they get there. Nitin Nohria, former dean of Harvard Business School, has spent three decades studying CEOs and working with new leaders as they adjust to the demands of the role. He says one of the biggest surprises for new CEOs is realizing that they can't—and shouldn't—run the company themselves. Instead, their job is to create the conditions for their leadership team to run it well. He also explains how CEOs can stay connected to their organizations, build the right leadership team, manage their boards, focus their time, and decide which emerging issues—including AI—actually deserve their attention. Nohria is author of The CEO: The Role, the Reality, the Responsibility.

    328. Ask Matt Anything: Don’t Let Your Communication Fizzle at the Finish

“How you end something often can be as important, if not more important, than how you start.” What’s the best way to wrap up a presentation? How do you stop yourself from repeating the same point? And what can you do when strong emotions start taking over? Matt Abrahams tackles these questions and more in this Ask Matt Anything episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, recorded with members of the Learning Community. He shares why a strong ending deserves as much attention as a strong opening, along with practical advice for holding attention, getting better at small talk, breaking repetitive speaking patterns, and channeling emotion more effectively. Takeaways: A strong ending reinforces what matters most. Return to your goal by reminding your audience what you want them to know, how you want them to feel, and what you want them to do next.Engagement requires giving your audience something to do. Questions, physical participation, vivid language, and shared experiences can help capture attention and keep people involved in your message.Activity: Land the plane. Take the ending of an upcoming presentation or meeting and write one sentence for each part of your goal: what you want people to know, feel, and do. Use those three points to build a concise closing.Episode Reference Links: Think Fast Talk Smart Learning Community  Connect: Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedIn Chapters: (00:00) - Introduction (00:44) - Why Endings Matter (02:16) - Ending With Your Goal (03:38) - Bringing It Full Circle (04:19) - Ending With a Call to Action (06:22) - Breaking Repetitive Speaking Patterns (08:50) - Keeping Your Audience Engaged (12:08) - Building Confidence in Small Talk (15:18) - Communicating Strong Emotions (18:01) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost. The Science of Manifesting Your Dream Life (Even When It Feels Impossible)

#320: What if there’s less standing between you and your dream life than you think? If you've ever caught yourself thinking "that's too big of a dream," this episode is going to completely shift how you see what's possible for your life. Today I'm sitting down with Olivia Rose Thomas — manifestation coach, co-host of Inspired Delusions, and someone who went from being skeptical of the idea of manifesting to completely transforming her life through it. Olivia breaks down the neuroscience behind why getting your hopes up is the most powerful thing you can do, why your 95% subconscious mind might be sabotaging what you want, and how to rewire your brain to expect good things. This isn't just woo-woo talk — Olivia connects quantum physics, nervous system regulation, and brain science to explain why manifestation actually works. She shares how she manifested her dream apartment the day after putting it on her vision board, why being audacious about your goals gives your brain more dopamine and motivation, and the exact tools that help you feel safe enough to dream bigger than you ever thought possible. This episode is for you if: You're tired of playing it safe and ready to let yourself receive what you actually wantYou've tried manifesting before and felt like it didn't workYou want to understand the science behind why your thoughts literally shape your realityYou're ready to stop being realistic and start being audacious We talk about… The moment Olivia went from manifestation skeptic to believer — and manifested her exact dream living situationWhy getting your hopes up is actually less painful than believing nothing is possibleThe study that proves we only see what we're looking for (and how to use this to your advantage)What your subconscious mind really is and why 95% of your thoughts are working against you without you knowing itThe three R's formula: Recognize, Rewire, Regulate — and how to actually change your beliefsWhy EFT tapping calms your nervous system and clears the "clouds" blocking your natural state of worthinessHow to use subliminals safely (and why creating your own with your voice works faster)Why acting "as if" and changing your identity is more powerful than any manifestation ritualWhy being realistic is the fastest road to mediocrity — and what to do insteadHow to feel safe enough in your nervous system to actually let yourself hope for more Episode Links: Follow Olivia on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/oliviarosethomas_/Follow Olivia on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@oliviarosethomas?lang=enListen to Olivia’s podcast, Inspired Delusions: https://open.spotify.com/show/6ETFmbKuK8CU6vYU9wFRwu?si=c93d63ba996d4dd7Get your She’s So Lucky Merch: https://shop.dearmedia.com/collections/shes-so-lucky Sponsors: Nutrafol: For a limited time, Nutrafol is offering our listeners ten dollars off your first month’s subscription and free shipping when you go to nutrafol.com enter the promo code BALANCEDLES.Kendra Scott: Visit kendrascott.com/gifts and use code SSL20 at checkout for 20% off ONE full-priced jewelry item. Segment: Read The Fine Prints - Contracts Will Make or Break Your Career

What if the biggest difference between artists who build sustainable careers and those who flame out after a few hits isn't talent, passion, or even opportunity, but simply understanding that no matter how hungry you are for success, you must read the fine prints before signing anything because the music industry is show business and if you don't understand the business aspect you will work your whole life and realize there's nothing to show for it? In this raw and deeply personal episode of Konnected Minds, we sit down with an artist who reveals the uncomfortable truth about getting signed to a record label as an overexcited young man who never had to struggle for studio sessions because talented people always wanted to help, why he never mentioned his friend Senabaita's name in any interview until today but this was the guy at University of Ghana who had studio equipment and a home setup and would say come come when you want to record so paying for studio sessions was never even a thing in his mind because his reality was people were always ready to offer help whenever they heard him sing, and why going into the conversation about getting signed it never crossed his mind how others struggled to pay for studio time or get money because even though he had none money was still never a thing in his mind. He breaks down why if he could go back and make decisions differently today he would not have been an overexcited young man who just wanted to make music for passion alone because no matter how much passion you have it's show business and there's a business aspect of it, why you can make all the music and make all the love songs and make the world dance but if you don't read the fine prints you work your whole life and realize you've worked but there's nothing to show for it, why he doesn't own all of his masters and to go into detail about that conversation would require diving deep deep deep deep deep deep so he'll leave it at here but he wishes he read the fine prints and now he'll deal with the consequences of not reading them. But he also confronts the reality of what he tells young talented kids who get into his DMs asking for help. Why his advice is simple and powerful in one line: read the fine prints, why the music industry is a wild wild place and if he didn't have the passion for what he's doing he would have hung his mic and called it a day by year five, why sometimes you go into the deepest and deepest of lows where you ask yourself is all of this even worth it, all these late nights and being on sets for 12 hours and people insulting you, is it even worth what you're getting at the end of it, and why the answer is no it's not worth it but what is worth it is the passion. He reveals why he balances passion with business now because it's very important and you need to be able to survive and keep doing what you're doing by putting money back into your business, why no matter how hungry you are he wasn't hungry when he went into it but was just a kid that loved music who just wanted to sing and did not care what he sang, and why he doesn't wish to be diplomatic and political but for this specific conversation he recognizes there's depths and depths and depths that would need an actual conversation to delve deeper into so he doesn't want to say it and leave it shallow for interpretation. But he also shares the powerful realization that changed his perspective. Why he appreciates that regardless of what happened the path he took is what made him who he is today, why he's super super super grateful for the opportunities, why growing up he heard something means the truth is only one but as an adult he's realized that's false because two things can be true, why a situation might be negative but that situation also helped shape the person he's become, and why when people listen to his childhood story they might say what bro but he recognizes both the negative and the positive truth of it. He confronts the brutal reality of the music industry. Why anytime he speaks to artists about money stuff and hears conversations about artists selling their catalogs and not owning masters there's always a thought that somebody is trying to use somebody, why that's something you're going to have to learn the difficult way because everybody's using everybody, why one of the best things you're going to have to have is leverage because leverage is what allows people to not be used, and why leverage shows up in so many different ways from knowing what you have to knowing who you are to knowing what you bring to the table so that when you walk into any room nobody can bully you. But we also dive into why he stayed under record labels for so long. Why every year taught him something and a lot of what he learned started from year four or five, why he learned very early on that he was a man of his own with his own values vision thoughts and ideas about how he wanted life to be but was working with people who were...
