Christopher Allen: Fourth Wall Ensemble

The emerging Fourth Wall Ensemble, founded in 2023, has made a splash in its first year with a double album release, including Awake, with music by Samuel Siskind; and Ad Manus, with vocal selections by Caroline Shaw, Dietrich Buxtehude, Jeff Beal, Eric Whitacre, Morten Lauridsen, and Reena Esmail. Christopher Allen, the ensemble’s artistic and creative director, speaks with Mary Claire Murphy and highlights some of Fourth Wall Ensemble’s recent live performances, especially their appearance on the Death of Classical series that’s held in crypts and cemeteries in New York City.

Sarah Kirkland Snider: Mass for the Endangered

Composer Sarah Kirkland Snider joins us to talk about her new release, Mass for the Endangered. With an evocative libretto by poet Nathaniel Bellows, Mass for the Endangered is a new take on the traditional Catholic Mass – this time directing its call to nature, rather than God. String Orchestra of Brooklyn: Afterimage

The String Orchestra of Brooklyn has released their debut album, called afterimage. It features two exquisitely soulful works written for the orchestra by Christopher Cerrone and Jacob Cooper, both of which are in response to classic works by Niccolò Paganini and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (also included on the disc). Conductor Eli Spindel and composer Cerrone join us to preview the recording, which also features contributions from the Argus Quartet and vocal soloists Mellissa Hughes and Kate Maroney.

Ray Chen: Player 1

New York Polyphony: Lamentationes

The Grammy-nominated early music vocal quartet New York Polyphony has released an album of remarkable sacred works from the Spanish renaissance. Entitled Lamentatione (Lamentations), the recording shines light on four composers, including Francisco de Peñalosa and Pedro de Escobar – both of whom helped spark the flowering of polyphony in the 16th century. New York Polyphony's Craig Philips joins us to preview the disc.
