    JTG MINI: Steven Bradbury

    In 2002, five men were racing in the 1000 metre short-track speed-skating final at the winter olympics in Salt Lake City. The only Australian in the race - Steven Bradbury - was not considered a medal-contender. He spent most of the race in last place - far behind the four other skaters duking it out for the gold, silver and bronze. But then, with just 50 metres of the race to go, the four skaters in the lead all crashed out on the very last bend, and Steven Bradbury was so far behind them that he was able to avoid the pile-up and sail past them and across the finish line, to be awarded Australia’s first ever gold medal at a Winter Olympic Games, and bringing the term ‘doing a Bradbury’ - meaning being extremely lucky to unexpectedly come from behind and win because of someone else’s mistake - into everyday vernacular. BUT, what a lot of people don’t know, is that Steven Bradbury’s race wasn’t just about luck - he actually had a strategy that paid off in the end. More Beckham dramaaaaaaah, with Team Beckham sending Gordon Ramsey and LIL TINY BABY (she's 14 btw) Harper onto the frontlines. Vale James Van Der Beek, the People's Ugly Crier. Winter Olympics on Winter Olympics on Winter Olympics! Gold medal shoe-in Ilia Malinin didn't quite defy physics when he fell a bunch of times and didn't even make the podium (see how I talk like I'm an expert now?), and we wonder whether in all that intense Russian-style training, his parents forgot the 'mental strength' side of things. We watched Glitter and Gold on Netflix and are therefore now experts in, and obsessed with, the Ice Dancing Pairs competition at the Olympics in which the American Team were ROBBED by the dodgy French judge AND EVERYBODY KNOWS IT. The AUDACITY of the Norwegian biathlete who used his bronze-medal winning press conference to apologise to the girlfriend he'd cheated on, and the EYE-ROLL in her official response was all *chef's kiss* The Olympic village ran out of condoms in three days but we have questions about the condoms themselves ie is there official branding like at the White House? (I mean like the White House has official branding on things like mugs and pens but tbh probs also condoms maybe?) SIZZLER IS COMING BACK. But to the most random location! But we're still going to be there on OPENING DAY. (Does anyone have a contact as Sizzler so we can be there on opening day?) Other stuff! ...     Just The Gist of… Tyra Banks (and her history of bizarre business failures).

    With this week’s premiere of Netflix’s ‘Reality Check: America’s Next Top Model’, it seemed like a good time to take a look into the history of the Smize Queen herself: Tyra Banks.  You know her as the creator and host of America’s Next Top Model. You know her as a Victoria’s Secret Model. You know her as the woman who yelled, “WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ALL ROOTING FOR YOU!” But do you know Tyra Banks as the boss of several (failed) businesses? A Twilight-style Young Adult novel/movie/product empire called ‘Modelland’ that was cancelled after one book. A beauty line called ‘Tyra Beauty’ that was actually an MLM and folded in less than two years. A theme park based on… ‘models’ that she said was too hard to describe but was essentially just a place to get $1500 glamour shots (also no longer in business). And now, of course, we have Tyra’s ‘Hot Ice Cream’ at her ‘Smize and Dream’ ice cream store (which has already had some food regulation dramas).  .     On November 17, 2019, the world watched as Prince Andrew (since downgraded to regular person BUT WORSE), scored one of the biggest PR own-goals in history during a Newsnight interview with Emily Maitlis. Convinced the interview would be his chance to get rid of those pesky Jeffrey Epstein rumours once and for all, it became clear within minutes - to everyone but him - that things were not going to end up the way he planned.  By the time the 49-minute interview was over, all Andrew had proven to the world was that the only thing he lacked more than self-awareness was empathy, and the only thing he seemed to have in abundance was an astonishing sense of entitlement, that gave him an uncanny ability to prove that the Dunning Kruger effect very much exists.     Just The Gist of.... Biosphere 2

    In 1991, a billion-dollar experiment took place, designed to see if humans could survive in an artificial earth inside a giant glass dome that would eventually be built on other planets. Years was spent building Biosphere 2 in the USA, and inside was an ocean with actual tides and waves, a rainforest, a desert, vast wetlands, a farm with crops, animals, housing and laboratories. ‘Rain’ could even be switched on and off. Eight Humans lived inside it for TWO YEARS. So why has hardly anybody heard of it? Because it was a disaster, none of it worked, and they nearly died. Turns out, despite sounding impressive, this experiment wasn’t run by NASA or even scientists, it was run by a bunch of hippies from a cult-like experimental theatre group who had no clue what they were doing, but had duped a billionaire into giving them a lot of money. .     JTG MIN-EDIUM... John Allen Chau

    The Sentinelese people are one of the last remaining isolated Indigenous tribes on earth, continuing to live today as they have for thousands of years. Since 1956 they have been protected by laws that prohibit anyone approaching their home on North Sentinel Island. But the laws are also in place to protect any outsiders who try to go there, as the Sentinelese tribe have pretty much tried to to kill anyone who goes near them.  Despite this, in 2018, a 26-year-old evangelical Christian missionary named John Allen Chau decided that the Sentinelese people, who had been living peacefully on North Sentinel Island for thousands of years, were actually part of Satan’s Last Stronghold on earth, because they had not yet accepted Jesus into their hearts by being converted to Christianity. John Allen Chau decided to change that. John Allen Chau is now dead. This is just the gist of John Allen Chau. . (Obviously I will still watch but C'MON Tyra you can do better than that. Actually, I've tried your 'tastes like milk that's been left on the bench for 8 hours 'hot ice cream' so... maybe you can't.) I promise I didn't plan it this way - there was just a lot of interesting butt-related NOOZ this week and the Gisteners all send it to me because my brand is strong when it comes to butt stuff I guess. First: The guy who posted a video the night before getting his anus sewn together - I don't think I've ever had more people send me a video, but DALE WAS FIRST. Here's the guy's video. Next: The science behind, ahem, why we shart (it's actually super interesting! But then I always think that about butt stuff). Here's the video from Dr Karan Rajan. And: 'Fart Proud' vs 'Fart Shame' households - possibly the most formative decision in determining the kind of adult each of us will become. I actually had two more fart-related things on the list but we ran out of time. Next week! Watching 'Competency Porn' is keeping us all from having a nervous breakdown at the moment.
