Stretching vs. Pandiculation: Why Your Brain Needs an Update

Stretching vs. Pandiculation: Why Your Brain Needs an Update | Episode 300Is stretching really helping your tight muscles, or is your brain missing an important part of the conversation? If you experience chronic muscular tension, stiffness, restricted mobility or recurring discomfort, you may have been told to stretch more. But what if lasting improvements in movement require more than simply lengthening your muscles? Welcome to a very special 300th episode of The Total Somatics Show! Join Heidi Hadley as she celebrates 300 podcast episodes, 25 years in clinical practice and sharing Total Somatics® with people in over 40 countries. In this milestone episode, Heidi explores why traditional stretching has limitations and how pandiculation offers a different, sensory-motor approach to improving movement awareness, muscular control and overall wellbeing. Why Pandiculation Is Different From Stretching Your brain, nervous system, muscles and fascia work together as an interconnected neuromyofascial web. When habitual patterns of muscular tension develop, simply stretching a muscle may not address the way your nervous system coordinates that movement. Pandiculation involves gently contracting, slowly lengthening and consciously releasing muscles, allowing you to explore movement through greater sensory awareness and voluntary control. This process encourages sensory-motor learning and provides valuable proprioceptive feedback. The goal isn't simply to stretch further. It's to develop a more intelligent conversation between your brain and body. Discover 5 Benefits of Pandiculation In this episode, discover how pandiculation may help you: Reduce habitual muscular tension by improving awareness and control of muscle contraction and release.Enhance mobility and flexibility through gentle, controlled movements rather than forcing a stretch.Improve proprioception and brain-body communication by engaging your sensory-motor system.Support pain management and physical comfort by exploring more efficient, less effortful movement patterns.Enhance everyday movement and quality of life through greater body awareness, coordination and movement confidence. You'll also discover how Total Somatics® combines somatic movement education, pandiculation, mindfulness and nervous system awareness to support your whole-body wellbeing. 🎉 Celebrate 300 Episodes — Join Total Somatics Online! Your Body Knows: The Power of Neuroception & Pandiculation

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt that something wasn't quite right? Perhaps you experienced a sudden tightening in your chest, a knot in your stomach, a change in your breathing or an overwhelming urge to leave. What if your body was responding to something before your conscious mind had even registered it? In this fascinating episode of The Total Somatics Show, Heidi Hadley explores the powerful relationship between neuroception, fascia, emotional experiences, protective muscle patterns and pandiculation. Our nervous system is constantly processing information from our internal and external environments, influencing how we feel, move, breathe and respond to the world around us. This process is often described through the concept of neuroception, a term introduced by Dr Stephen Porges to explain how our nervous system evaluates cues of safety and potential danger outside conscious awareness. But what happens when protective responses become habitual? How can Clinical Somatic Movement help us develop greater awareness, movement variability and a sense of safety within our bodies? In this episode, you'll discover: - Your body's internal warning system: How neuroception influences physiological responses before conscious awareness. - The power of embodiment: Why developing somatic awareness helps you recognise subtle changes in your nervous system. - The relationship between emotions and fascia: How repeated emotional and physiological experiences can influence muscle tone, posture, breathing and fascial adaptation. - Why your body braces and protects: How stress, fear and uncertainty can activate protective movement patterns. - When protection becomes habit: How repeated muscular contractions and movement strategies can become automatic, even when the original circumstances have changed. - The role of pandiculation: How gentle, intentional contractions followed by slow, controlled releases can support sensorimotor awareness and help reduce habitual muscular tension. - Creating greater nervous system flexibility: Why recognising our internal sensations and developing movement choices are valuable lifelong skills. Are emotions really stored in fascia? Heidi also provides an important clarification about the expression "emotions are stored in fascia." Rather than suggesting that fascia literally stores emotions or emotional memories, Heidi explains how emotional experiences can become embodied through repeated patterns of nervous system activation. These patterns may be expressed through muscle tone, breathing, posture, movement behaviour and adaptations within the fascial network. Our bodies are continuously responding to our experiences, and over time, some protective responses can become deeply habitual. Understanding these relationships gives us an opportunity to explore how we move, respond and experience ourselves from the inside out. From unconscious protection to conscious awareness Your body is not working against you. Many of its responses are designed to protect you. However, a nervous system that has repeatedly responded to stress or perceived danger may continue to recruit familiar protective patterns, even when they are no longer necessary. Through Clinical Somatics, embodiment and pandiculation, we can begin exploring these habitual responses, improving sensorimotor awareness and developing greater freedom and choice in how we move. The more we learn to sense ourselves, the more opportunities we create to respond rather than simply react. Can Grief & Growth Exist Together? With Special Guest, Melanie Cool

Grief can touch every part of us, our thoughts, emotions, relationships and even how we experience ourselves in our bodies. Yet growth does not require us to deny our grief, rush through it or pretend everything is okay. Together, Heidi and Melanie explore how grief and growth can coexist and how, even during painful chapters of life, we can gradually rediscover meaning, connection, hope and possibility. In this episode, you’ll explore: • Why grief doesn’t follow a neat or predictable timeline  • Whether grief and personal growth can exist at the same time  • The difference between moving forward and “moving on”  • How difficult experiences can change the way we see ourselves and our lives  • The role of connection, community and support during grief  • What post-traumatic growth really means  • How we can honour what has been lost while still allowing ourselves to experience joy  • Practical ways to support yourself through periods of loss and change  • Why growth after adversity doesn’t mean the experience needed to happen—or that we have to be grateful for it This conversation is a beautiful reminder that healing is not about erasing the past. We can honour our grief while also creating space for something new to emerge. Grief and growth are not opposites. We can miss what was, honour what mattered, and still allow ourselves to become who we are becoming. The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change

Week 5 — The Compound Effect: Small Practices, Powerful Change What if changing how you feel in your body doesn’t require one enormous breakthrough? What if meaningful change begins with something much smaller? A moment of awareness. A gentler movement. A pause before reacting. A little more curiosity and a little less judgement. Welcome to the final episode of Somatic in September. Over the past few weeks, Heidi Hadley has taken us on a journey through the Australian landscape to explore the remarkable relationship between your brain, body and nervous system. We’ve stood beneath the ancient trees of the rainforest and explored resilience. We’ve travelled beneath the surface of the Great Barrier Reef to discover the importance of interconnection. We’ve encountered the crocodile and considered the protective wisdom of the nervous system. And we’ve stepped away from the noise to rediscover stillness, connection and presence. Now, in our final episode, we bring everything together with one powerful idea: Small practices, repeated consistently, can create powerful change. 🌱 The Power of Small Shifts When we want something to change, it’s easy to assume we need to do more. More effort. More stretching. More exercise. More discipline. But lasting change isn't always created through one dramatic action. Sometimes it begins quietly. Perhaps you notice tension a little earlier than you did before. Maybe you become curious about a sensation rather than immediately judging it. Perhaps you notice your breathing, soften unnecessary effort or spend a few quiet moments connecting with the world around you. Individually, these moments can seem insignificant. But repeated over time, they begin to accumulate. Like roots deepening quietly beneath the earth, small practices can create the foundations for powerful change. 🎧 In This Episode, You’ll Explore: Why meaningful change doesn’t always require dramatic actionHow small practices can accumulate over timeWhy consistency can be more powerful than intensityThe role of awareness and curiosity in Somatic MovementHow your brain, body and nervous system continually work togetherWhy noticing small changes mattersHow reducing self-judgement can change your relationship with your bodyThe importance of bringing somatic awareness into everyday lifeHow the lessons from Somatic in September connectHow to continue developing your somatic practice beyond this series🌿 Your Final Somatic in September Reflection Take a few moments to think back over the past month. Ask yourself: What has surprised me? What have I noticed about my body that I wasn't noticing before? Have there been moments when I’ve responded with curiosity rather than judgement? Have I noticed tension sooner? Have I experienced moments of greater ease, connection or presence? Don’t dismiss the small changes because they don’t feel dramatic enough. Notice them. Those moments matter. Because awareness itself is part of the practice. And rather than searching for one enormous breakthrough, consider what might happen if you continued giving your brain and nervous system small opportunities to experience something different. Small practice. Repeated consistently. Powerful change. 🌱 Continue Your Total Somatics Journey If Somatic in September has sparked your curiosity and you’d like to turn these ideas into a regular practice, you're invited to continue the journey inside the Total Somatics Membership. Inside the membership, you'll find: • Guided Somatic Movement practices • Mindfulness sessions • Masterclasses • Live Q&As • Ongoing education and support • A community exploring Somatics alongside you It’s a place to move beyond simply understanding these concepts and begin weaving them into everyday life. The conversation becomes a practice. And the practice becomes a way of living. 👉 Ready to continue your journey? Visit: https://TotalSomatics.com/Join-now Thank you for joining Heidi throughout Somatic in September. This may be the final episode of the series, but it doesn’t need to be the end of your exploration. Keep noticing. Keep moving with awareness. Keep asking questions. And above all, keep listening. Because your body has been speaking to you all along. And the more gently you listen, the more beautifully it responds. Until next time, be kind to yourself and stay curious. Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers

Week 3 — Before Your Body Shouts: Learn to Hear the Whispers What if your body isn’t fighting against you? What if it’s trying to protect you? Tight shoulders. A clenched jaw. Holding your breath. A body that seems unable to relax. We can easily become frustrated with these sensations and wonder, “Why won’t my body just let go?” But what happens when we ask a different question? “What might my body be trying to protect?” In Week 3 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley introduces us to one of Australia’s most ancient and misunderstood animals — the crocodile — to explore the remarkable protective intelligence of the human nervous system. Crocodiles have survived for millions of years because their systems are exceptionally good at one thing: survival. Your nervous system also has protection at its core. Moment by moment, it receives sensory information and responds to what is happening within and around you. When your system perceives a need for protection, that response can sometimes be experienced as muscular tension, bracing, restricted breathing or a feeling of being unable to completely let go. Rather than immediately treating those responses as something that needs to be fought or forced away, Somatic Movement invites us to become curious about them. Because your body may not be the enemy. It may be doing the best it can with the information it currently has. And when we begin providing new sensory information and movement possibilities, we can start developing a very different relationship with our body. 🐊 In This Episode, You’ll Explore: Why your nervous system is constantly working to protect youWhy muscular tension and bracing may be protective responsesWhat the crocodile can teach us about survival and adaptationWhy your body can sometimes find it difficult to “let go”The connection between stress, breathing and muscular tensionWhy forcing a tense body to relax may not always be the answerHow Somatic Movement can provide new sensory informationThe importance of noticing your body’s quieter signalsHow curiosity can change the way you experience tension and discomfortWhy working with your body can feel very different from fighting against it🌿 Your Somatic in September Practice This week, notice one moment when your body becomes tense. Perhaps your shoulders rise. Your jaw tightens. Your breathing changes. Your stomach contracts. Your hands grip. Or you notice yourself bracing somewhere in your body. Instead of immediately trying to make the tension disappear, pause for a moment. Notice it. And gently ask yourself: “What might my body be protecting right now?” You don’t need to find the perfect answer. The practice is simply about replacing frustration with curiosity. Notice what happens when, rather than demanding that your body change, you become interested in what it may be communicating. 🎧 Your Guided Somatic Practice You'll find a guided Somatic Movement practice accompanying this episode to support your exploration throughout the week. Approach the movements gently and with curiosity. Remember: You’re not trying to override your body. You’re offering it new options. Your nervous system has spent your entire life gathering information, adapting and trying to protect you. Learning to recognise its quieter signals may help you notice what your body is communicating before it has to shout for your attention. Next week, we complete our Somatic in September journey by stepping away from the noise and rediscovering something many of us have quietly lost: Connection. Stillness. Presence. Until then, remember: Your body has spent every moment of your life trying to protect you. The moment we stop seeing the body as the enemy and begin approaching it as a partner, our relationship with ourselves can start to change. Stay curious. Stay compassionate with your body. Your Body is Listening to Everything - Are You?

Week 2 — Your Body Is Listening to Everything — Are You? What if the tension in your neck isn’t just about your neck? What if your breathing, nervous system, fascia, muscles, thoughts and emotions are all part of a much bigger conversation happening throughout your body? In Week 2 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes us beneath the surface of Australia’s spectacular Great Barrier Reef to explore a powerful idea: Your body is not a collection of separate parts. It is an interconnected system. Just as a coral reef thrives through thousands of living relationships, your body relies on constant communication and adaptation. Your fascia, muscles, nervous system, breathing and sensory experiences don’t operate independently. They continually influence one another. And when we stop focusing solely on individual “problem areas” and begin paying attention to the relationships between the parts, something can shift. Perhaps wellbeing isn’t about achieving perfection. Perhaps it’s about improving connection. 🌊 In This Episode, You’ll Explore: Why your body is more interconnected than you may realiseWhat the Great Barrier Reef can teach us about the human bodyThe relationship between fascia, muscles and your nervous systemWhy focusing only on the area of discomfort can miss the bigger pictureHow breathing and sensory awareness influence your whole systemWhy diversity and adaptability can create resilienceHow thoughts and physical sensations continually influence our experienceWhy wellbeing doesn’t require every part of you to be “perfect”How simple observation can help develop greater body awarenessThe importance of curiosity when exploring patterns of tension and movement🌿 Your Somatic in September Practice Take five minutes this week to observe something in nature. Watch the waves. Notice clouds moving across the sky. Observe birds flying, trees moving in the breeze or water flowing. Rather than concentrating on one individual element, notice how everything works together. Then bring that same curiosity to your body. Notice your breathing. Notice your shoulders. Notice your jaw. Notice your eyes. Notice where you’re holding effort — and where you feel ease. There’s nothing you need to force or fix. Simply observe. Sometimes becoming aware of the relationships within our body can give our nervous system new information and new possibilities. 🎧 Your Guided Somatic Practice To accompany this episode, Heidi is sharing a 33-minute gentle movement practice designed to explore and release patterns of tension around the: • Neck • Shoulders • Ribs • Back https://TotalSomatics.com/gift Think of this practice not as forcing your body to change, but as offering your nervous system new sensory information and a different conversation. Next week, we meet one of Australia’s most misunderstood animals — the crocodile — and explore why the protective patterns we develop aren’t necessarily mistakes. They may be intelligent strategies your nervous system learned for survival. For now, remember: “The reef doesn’t thrive because of one single coral. It thrives because of relationships.” Your body may be much the same. Healing and wellbeing aren't only about one part. They're about the relationship between all the parts and the relationship you have with yourself. Resilience: How Your Body Learns to Adapt

Week 1 — Resilience: How Your Body Learns to Adapt What if resilience isn’t about staying strong, pushing through or never struggling? What if resilience is something your body is already learning — every single day? In Week 1 of Somatic in September, Heidi Hadley takes you into the ancient Daintree Rainforest to explore what nature can teach us about resilience, adaptation and the remarkable capacity of the human body to change. Ancient trees don’t survive because they avoid storms. They survive because they adapt. Your body does something remarkably similar. Throughout life, your nervous system continually responds to experience, while your fascia and neuromuscular system adapt to the demands placed upon them. Rather than seeing ourselves as permanently “stuck”, understanding this adaptability can offer a very different perspective: Change is possible. In this episode, Heidi explores: Why resilience doesn’t mean being calm all the time What ancient trees can teach us about adapting to change How your nervous system continually responds and learns from experience How fascia remodels throughout life Why patterns in the body don’t necessarily have to be permanent The difference between resilience and simply “pushing through” How curiosity can help us develop greater body awareness Why small, consistent experiences can create meaningful change over time 🌳 Your Somatic in September Practice This week, find a tree. It might be in your garden, your local park, along your morning walk, or even outside your office window. Take a moment to really notice it. Then ask yourself: What has helped this tree to grow? Consider its roots. The weather it has endured. The seasons it has experienced. The conditions that have shaped it. Then gently turn the question towards yourself: What has helped me to grow? No judgement. No need to fix anything. Just curiosity. Because perhaps resilience isn’t about avoiding the storms of life. Perhaps it’s about developing deeper roots, greater adaptability and the capacity to find our way back towards balance. 🎧 Free Regulation Practice Complement this episode with Heidi’s short guided eye movement and breathing practice: https://TotalSomatics.com/Regulate Next week, we journey from the rainforest to the Great Barrier Reef and explore how connection, interdependence and adaptability can create strength. “The strongest trees aren’t the ones that avoid the storm.
