About

Sherlock Holmes had a very rich history in radio, starting in the 1930s and continuing for decades. Here are some of the most notable classic Sherlock Holmes radio shows: 1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (American, 1930-1936) This was one of the earliest and most influential radio adaptations. It began airing on US radio networks in 1930. Scriptwriter Edith Meiser was instrumental in adapting Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories and even creating original material. Various actors played Holmes, including William Gillette (for the premiere), Clive Brook, Richard Gordon, and Louis Hector. Leigh Lovell consistently played Dr. Watson. 2. The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (American, 1939-1950) This is perhaps the most famous and longest-running American radio series featuring Holmes. It starred the iconic duo of Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, who also portrayed the characters in the popular film series of the same era. They starred in over 200 episodes. The series ran for 374 episodes in total, with various actors taking on the roles after Rathbone and Bruce departed. It was initially broadcast on the Blue Network and later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System.
