I have listened to these two for years, and recently started bingeing the podcast version to sleep. Sounds weird, right? Murder and crime for calm sleep? Nope. It makes sure my dreams stay normal, it’s more common that I dream about working, with Harlowe and Derrick being awesome in the background. Their attention to detail, fact based approach, care about the victim, and respect for families involved is so obvious and amazing. Their banter is natural and obvious their sibling style relationship makes the message enjoyable. They respect each other, regardless of also being able to tease each other.
More recently it also has been shown that they are, like us all- human. Harlowe has noted some difficulties in her personal life. She doesn’t shy from this, despite it increasing her anxiety (shout out for the panic disorders and ADHD folk) and the protective nature of their relationship has been incredibly tender and encouraging to experience. Their partnership remains strong, and their chosen cases seems to be influenced by her experiences, as she explores and exposes the narcissistic characteristics of perpetrators. Her ability to delve into the ‘why’ of their actions, and outlining how people are nothing but fuel has been enlightening. Derrick similarly explains the sometimes baffling actions of the different avenues of investigation and pursuit of justice. His context helps the audience realize that sometimes the laws that protect our rights also prevent the swift actions desired.
This duo is under-appreciated. Some podcast and YouTube channels dedicate to shorter stories because of the almighty algorithm, and this team is committed to telling the whole story, often taking multiple episodes of several hours to complete the canvas of the whole experience for us. And I am here for it. I want the real art they provide, not the sad photocopies that other channels present.
I didn’t get the day one merch, and I’m sad about it, but I am considering making myself some embroidered couch cushions, one side featuring an undercover pineapple, and the other declaring with pride ‘allegedly, in my opinion, don’t come for me’ (which I think Harlowe should really consider mixing back into her lexicon, it’s been a bit absent lately).
Bravo folks for the best continuous podcast I have found, keep it up, and ignore anyone who says otherwise. You two are masters.
