Listen, read and watch Twisted Minds now at twistedminds.com.au

They are the men and women tasked with getting inside the minds of Australia’s most hardened criminals. Whether it’s the forensic psychologists and psychiatrists who meet the crooks once they’ve caught, or, the criminal profilers tasked with trying to predict what’s driving an offender on the loose – this is high-stakes work.

If they stuff up, it’s our safety that’s placed at risk.

We’ll hear what it’s like to sit across from a serial killer or a violent sex offender and ask them what makes them tick, and why they do the things they do.

It’s their evidence that helps courts understand often unthinkable actions and gives parole boards insight into if - or when - they may strike again.

A blazing fire has decimated a backpackers hostel in the rural town of Childers, Queensland. Blackened bodies are strewn across the smoking premises. 15 young travellers have died and the race is on to find the perpetrator. As a criminal behaviourist, it’s your job to compile a psychological profile to help police catch the arsonist responsible  … hopefully before more people burn to death. The stakes were just as high when bombs went off across nightclubs in Bali and 88 Australians died. This was all in a day’s work for Steve Longford.

    Madness

    Madness

Dr Richard Furst has seen it all. He has sat down with Jessica Camilleri, the young woman who decapitated her mother, dropping her head in a neighbour’s frontyard. He also called Derek Barrett’s bluff, after he murdered his niece then stuffed her in a blowhole, and he’s one of the few to get inside the mind of school teacher Stephanie Scott’s killer, a depraved cleaner who simply took the opportunity to rape and murder when he spotted Stephanie alone at her desk.

    Murder

    Murder

Dr Claire Ferguson is an expert in concealed homicide. A trained forensic psychologist turned criminologist she works closely with Queensland police to help them investigate the most complex of cases, usually when a murder has been concealed as a suicide and when investigators must re-evaluate evidence. Dr Ferguson believes Gerard Baden-Clay represents a particular type of cruelty, unique to domestic violence murderers in which the perpetrator seeks to control the victim not only during the relationship but also after death. Baden-Clay did this through a “double barrel” concealment strategy but not even that could save him thanks to the astuteness of first responding officers
