Testosterone: Do We All Need a Boost?

We’re hearing a ton about the marvels of testosterone from influencers, celebrities, and even government officials. They say we should be thinking about our T levels, topping them off with extra if they’re too low. And we’re told that the benefits of testosterone are HUGE: that we’ll be stronger, sexier, and more energized. So is that true?? And if you do go for a testosterone bump, do you need to worry about possible side effects, like ’roid rage, infertility and other risks? We talk to endocrinologists Prof. Shalender Bhasin and Prof. Richard Auchus as well as social psychologist Dr. Justin Carré to find out.  Find our transcript here: https://tinyurl.com/ScienceVsTestosterone  Find Wendy's chat about Bigorexia here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsZEfTWuIqg In this episode, we cover: (00:00) We’re obsessed with testosterone (02:59) Will T make you bigger and stronger? (09:25) ‘Roid rage (18:04) Will T turn you into a horndog? (25:48) Will T put pep in your step?  (27:51) The risks of taking T (31:49) Why are we like this? This episode was produced by Rose Rimler, with help from Meryl Horn, Ekedi Fausther-Keeys, and Michelle Dang. We're edited by Blythe Terrell. Wendy Zukerman is the executive producer. Horror Neurobiology (WATCHING SCARY STUFF) with Austin Lim

Thrills. Chills. Hiding behind your hands. It’s officially SPOOKTOBER month with a huge, fascinating (and I promise, mellow) episode on why humans watch horror, and what’s happening in your brain. Not only do we have the author of “Horror on the Brain: the Neuroscience Behind Science Fiction,” neuroscientist Dr. Austin Lim, but this also features CUTS from other episodes to FLESH it all out. Enjoy the political sociology of zombies vs. vampires, feminist body horror, horror as anti-war art, liminal spaces, the best blood in the business, goosebumps and Goosebumps, evolutionary mismatches, why clowns unsettle you, and if horror is having its moment. (Note: it is.) Also, we had to cap this at 2+ hours so if we don’t cover *your* favorite movie or series and you yell at me about it, I will roll my eyes so hard that I will die and then I will haunt you by hiding your car keys. • 5 Things That Keep Us Whole: Staying Grounded in an Unraveling World | Frankly 163

    hace 2 días

5 Things That Keep Us Whole: Staying Grounded in an Unraveling World | Frankly 163

In the face of increasing chaos in our world, Nate turns inward in this week's Frankly to examine a more personal question: what allows an individual to remain grounded, authentic, and capable of contributing meaningfully in turbulent times? He draws on his own experience to identify five things that help him build personal resilience, taking care to not treat them as any sort of universal formula. Rather, Nate offers a systems-oriented perspective that recognizes that our capacity to engage with a complex world depends partly on the conditions that sustain us as human beings.  For Nate, those conditions begin with self-care and the knowledge that burning oneself out in service of an urgent – although perhaps just – cause undermines the work itself. He explores the need for both structured routines and slack that allows the mind and body to process experiences, rather than remain trapped in a constant state of simulation. He also discusses how time in nature and friendship help reconnect him to a deeper sense of belonging and self, and the importance of meaningful work that directs our time and energy toward the possibility of creating a better future than the default. Nate's five priorities form a sort of personal compass that allows him to navigate uncertainty without losing sight of what makes life worth living – he invites listeners to examine their own experiences in order to discover the conditions that help them show up more fully for themselves, their communities, and the future they hope to build.  What are five things from your own life that help you feel like your whole self? How might you redesign your daily life to create more space for the relationships, environments, and practices that sustain you? And if you had more of what genuinely grounds you, what meaningful work might you become capable of doing?  (Recorded October 21st, 2026)   Show Notes and More   Watch this video episode on YouTube   Want to learn the broad overview of The Great Simplification in 30 minutes?
