Laith Marouf | Why the West Fails to Understand Resistance

In episode 75 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Laith Marouf, a Syrian, Palestinian, Canadian journalist, political commentator, and the founder of Free Palestine TV. Laith’s work spans frontline journalism, political analysis, and independent media organizing, rooted in the Palestinian struggle for liberation and the broader politics of West Asian resistance. Born into a Syrian-Palestinian family and later based in Canada, his reporting and commentary have focused on imperialism, Zionist settler-colonialism, and the role of independent media in challenging mainstream narratives. We discuss how his Palestinian-Syrian heritage and lived experience as a diasporan journalist shaped his political consciousness, what led him to found Free Palestine TV as a platform for uncensored coverage and analysis, and how his time in Canada informs his understanding of Western media complicity. Laith reflects on the challenges of sustaining independent journalism under political and financial pressure, the importance of on-the-ground reporting from Palestine and Lebanon, and why media sovereignty is essential to anti-imperialist struggle. Mr Fong | Debunking Anti‑China Claims: But at what cost?

In episode 74 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Mr. Fong, a Netherlands‑based content creator known for his debunks of anti‑China propaganda and his work challenging Western narratives about Xinjiang, extremism, and China’s political system. His social‑media presence has grown across diasporic communities, from Malaysia to Europe, where his videos circulate widely among audiences seeking clarity beyond mainstream headlines. We discuss how his political understanding developed despite growing up in a depoliticised Chinese‑diaspora household, how studying history and encountering misinformation pushed him to “untangle” his own assumptions, and why he began creating content after witnessing rising harassment of Chinese people in the Netherlands. Fong reflects on learning about Xinjiang through personal encounters, researching ETIM and extremist violence, and tracing how misattributed images, recycled witnesses, and repetition‑based propaganda shaped global perceptions. He also explains how speaking publicly about these issues has led to an ongoing legal case in the Netherlands, raising questions about censorship, political pressure, and the limits of dissent in Europe. Francisco Dominguez | Stop Lecturing the Global South on How to Fight

In episode 73 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Dr. Francisco Domínguez, a Chilean academic, writer, and long‑standing analyst of Latin American politics. He has spent decades in the UK working in anti-imperialist solidarity movements, including senior roles within the Cuba Solidarity Campaign and the Venezuelan Solidarity Campaign, and is known for his work on sovereignty, political economy, and internationalism. We discuss how living through the Chilean coup and later arriving in the UK as a refugee shaped his political worldview, how studying political economy transformed his understanding of global power, and what decades of solidarity organising taught him about internationalism. Francisco reflects on the shifts in UK activism from the 1980s to today, the challenges of building movements in the Global North, and why humility, sovereignty, and clarity are essential for meaningful global solidarity. https://cuba-solidarity.org.uk https://www.venezuelasolidarity.co.uk/ Follow Ileana Chan: Instagram/X/TikTok: @ileanacforpeace One-time donation to support our work: https://buymeacoffee.com/empirewatch https://gofund.me/2cd9de43 Subscribe and Follow Empire Watch: YouTube: @EmpireWatch Instagram: @EmpireWatchMedia TikTok: @EmpireWatchMedia X: @EmpireWatchX AUDIO released EVERY WEDNESDAY The Global Majority for Peace podcast brings you in-depth interviews every TUESDAY in video and WEDNESDAY in audio to discuss our mission of building a global movement towards a multipolar world. Abla Kandalaft | Storytelling as Resistance

In episode 72 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Abla Kandalaft, a London‑based journalist, researcher, and film programmer. She is a media consultant and writer for The Canary, serves as Chair of the Independent Media Association, is part of the team behind Mydylarama (an outlet dedicated to global cinema and cultural commentary), and a programmer and curator at the Garden Cinema in London and other venues and festivals. We discuss storytelling as resistance, Hollywood's role as an arm of US empire, and how Iran is winning the meme war by turning America's own cultural tools against it. Abla explains how growing up in a Lebanese-Syrian household in the UK shaped her anti-imperialist worldview, why sovereignty is the core of all genuine resistance, and how the US and Israel are actively trying to foment civil war in Lebanon. Later, she breaks down the battle over media and culture, from Iranian embassies going viral with "hunk of the month" Abbas Araghchi, to the Films of Resistance database platforming Palestinian, Lebanese and Sudanese cinema, to why Hollywood blockbusters like Independence Day would flop if made today. Anna Malindog-Uy | US Sacrificial Pawn: Philippines Energy Collapse

In episode 71 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Professor Anna Malindog‑Uy, researcher-writer, academic, consultant and a regular columnist in the Manila Times. Anna explains why the Philippines became the first country to declare a national energy emergency, how its dependence on imported oil and lack of reserves make it extremely vulnerable, and how the crisis is hitting ordinary Filipinos, from jeepney drivers losing income to fisherfolk unable to work. She also breaks down the Marcos Jr. administration’s mixed signals on China and how this policy confusion affects long‑term energy security. Finally, she situates the crisis within a shifting global order shaped by U.S. decline, Middle East instability, and China’s growing role, and how these changes are influencing Filipino views on sovereignty and imperialism. Professor Anna Malindog Uy is a researcher-writer, academic, consultant and a regular columnist in the Manila Times. Alex Gordon | Why the West CANNOT COMPUTE China's Socialist Success

In episode 70 of Global Majority for Peace, Ileana Chan is joined by Alex Gordon, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Britain  @CommunistParty  former president of the RMT rail and seafarers’ union, and long‑time anti‑war organizer. Alex breaks down why U.S. imperialism is in clear decline and what replaces it, whether communism has a viable future inside the imperial core, and how the British ruling class switches between courting and smearing China. He also discusses the real labor gains China has made, including the largest collective bargaining agreement in history, and explains why British trade unionists need direct delegation trips to China, now visa‑free. He also offers practical advice on how to identify the "compatible left" that serves imperialism versus genuine anti‑imperialist forces. Alex Gordon is the former President of the rail workers and seafarers’ trade union RMT, the Chair of the Marx Memorial Library and Workers’ School and the recently elected General Secretary of the Communist Party of Britain (CPB). Mikaela Erskog and Gisela Cernadas | The US Is a Drowning Empire

This week we have two of the researchers, editors, coordinators and co authors of Tricontinental Research Institute’s, “Hyper-Imperialism: A Dangerous Decadent New Stage”, Gisela Cernadas and Mika Nhondo Erskog. In episode 69 of Global Majority for Peace, economist and researcher, Gisela Cernadas and researcher and editor at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research, Mika Nhondo Erskog join Ileana Chan to break down their landmark study "Hyperimperialism: A Dangerous, Decadent New Stage", and answer a critical question: why does the US spend nearly $2 trillion on its military yet continue to lose ground? Gisela and Mika explain the shift from US productive hegemony to coercive dominance, how China's rise fundamentally changes global power, and why this moment can be described as "the imperialism of a drowning billionaire who firmly believes he ought to be in the yacht." They walk through the study's findings, from 750 to 900 US military bases worldwide to sanctions affecting a third of all countries, and offer a sober assessment of where the anti-imperialist movement stands today. They also unpack the study's categorization of Global South and Global North, explain why hyperimperialism is a distinct stage from earlier theories of imperialism, and discuss the growing resistance in Africa's Sahel region, the shifting alliances of the Global South, and the central contradiction of our time: a declining US-led imperialism versus an emergent China-led socialism. Read the study: https://thetricontinental.org/studies-on-contemporary-dilemmas-4-hyper-imperialism/ Read the updated newsletter: https://thetricontinental.org/newsletterissue/hyper-imperialism-hyper-drive/ Gisela Cernadas is an Argentine economist, independent researcher and member of the No Cold War collective. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Political Economy at the National University of San Martin in Argentina. Mika Nhondo Erskog is a researcher and editor at Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research and co-cordinator of the regional Pan-Africa office of Tricontinental. She is also part of Pan Africanism Today Secretariat, which coordinates the regional articulation of the International People's Assembly, and a coordinator of No Cold War, an international peace platform. She is based in Shanghai, currently pursuing her PhD in the School of International Relations and Public Affairs at Fudan University. David Hundeyin | Pan‑Africanism vs Empire: Nigeria, the AES, and the Fight for Africa’s Future

In episode 68 of Global Majority for Peace, Nigerian investigative journalist David Hundeyin, founder of West Africa Weekly and The Spearhead joins Ileana Chan to discuss his journey from award-winning journalism to political exile and the brutal reality of U.S. imperialism in Africa. David traces his political awakening to his father's preventable death, which launched him into a confrontation with the Nigerian establishment and a career of full-contact investigative journalism. He details his explosive exposé of Nigeria's current president as a convicted U.S. drug dealer and CIA asset, the subsequent lawsuit against the CIA, FBI, and DEA, and how he was placed on a no-fly list after the 2020 Lekki massacre before fleeing into exile. Together, Ileana and David explore what it truly means to be a politically conscious journalist in an age of empire, the revolutionary potential of the Alliance of Sahel States, and whether the multipolar world offers the Global South a genuine path out of dependency. David Hundeyin is a Nigerian investigative journalist, author, and founder of West Africa Weekly and The Spearhead. He won the People Journalism Prize for Africa in 2020, and he was named one of the 100 Most Influential Africans of 2022 by New African Magazine. His sophomore nonfiction book titled ‘Breaking Point’ won the 2025 ANA Prize for Nonfiction. Hundeyin currently lives under political asylum protection in Ghana where he is working on his third book.
