    The Planet Will Survive… But Will We? 🌍 | An Oceanographer on Our Changing Oceans

    In this episode of Cardiff Voices, we sit down with Mélinda Martins, an oceanographer and PhD researcher at Cardiff University whose story brings together science, climate, culture, sport and life in Wales. We explore what is actually happening beneath the surface of our oceans from rising temperatures and ocean acidification to plastic pollution, carbon and the changing marine ecosystem and ask a question that affects all of us: what happens if we fail to act quickly enough? And this conversation is particularly relevant here in Wales. The Welsh Government has committed to the 30by30 target protecting and effectively managing 30% of Wales's land, freshwater and sea for nature by 2030. Wales is also working to strengthen its Marine Protected Area network and restore important coastal habitats such as seagrass and saltmarsh, which can support biodiversity and help coastal areas adapt to climate change. There are plans to explore a “marine net benefit” approach so that marine development can leave biodiversity in a better state, while the Welsh National Marine Plan provides the wider framework for balancing environmental protection with the sustainable use and development of Welsh seas. And in 2026, the conversation has moved even further: work has begun on Wales's first Climate and Nature Action Plan, designed to tackle climate change and nature loss as one connected challenge. But what do all these policies mean when you're actually studying what is happening in our oceans? Mélinda helps us bring the science back to everyday life.
