The Future of the Collective Human Organism | Jon Mills, EP 445

Do you have a coincidence story to tell? Please go to The Coincidence Project website to share your story!https://thecoincidenceproject.net/share/Is humanity heading toward collapse—or toward transformation? In this thought-provoking episode of Connecting with Coincidence, psychiatrist and synchronicity researcher Bernard Beitman speaks with philosopher and psychoanalyst Jon Mills, author of The End of the World: Civilization and Its Fate. They explore one of the most urgent questions of our time: why do human beings clearly see global dangers—climate disruption, war, inequality—yet struggle to act? Mills describes a powerful psychological pattern he calls collective bystander disorder, where humanity watches its own crisis unfold while assuming someone else will solve it.But the conversation turns toward hope. Bernard introduces the idea of humanity developing a collective self-observer—the capacity to see our own behavior as a species the way a person learns self-awareness in therapy. Conflict, they suggest, may even generate new possibilities for growth. If humanity can learn to see itself clearly, a different future may still be possible.Jon Mills is a Canadian philosopher, psychoanalyst, and retired clinical psychologist whose work bridges continental philosophy, depth psychology, and cultural criticism. He is an Honorary Professor at the University of Essex and has held faculty positions at Adelphi University’s Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology, the New School for Existential Psychoanalysis, and Adler Graduate Professional School in Toronto, where he taught for over two decades. A Fulbright Scholar and author or editor of more than thirty books, his work explores the psychological and philosophical forces shaping human experience. His latest book is End of the World: Civilization and Its Fate.Dr. Bernard Beitman, MD, is a Yale- and Stanford-trained psychiatrist and the founder of The Coincidence Project. He previously served as Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia and has spent decades researching synchronicity and meaningful coincidences. Through his writing, teaching, and podcast, Connecting with Coincidence, he continues to explore how these experiences can deepen our understanding of connection, purpose, and human consciousness.

Uncertainty Rules the Future of Humanity | Rick Tarnas, EP 444

Like synchronicity on a broader scale, astrology shows Humanity the loving care of the Universe. Synchronicity offers a way to understand astrology without pretending the planets cause events in a mechanical sense. Rick frames synchronicity as the broader phenomenon: meaningful correlations between inner states and outer events that appear patterned rather than random. Astrology, in that frame, becomes a powerful subset—an “astrological synchronicity”—because the movements of planets and the rhythms of human affairs line up with striking regularity. The key move is interpretive: the planets function more like a clock than an engine. A clock doesn’t cause 11:30—it indicates the time. In the same way, planetary cycles “point to” archetypal fields—Saturnian limits and maturation, Plutonic death-rebirth dynamics, Uranian liberation and upheaval—within which human lives and history unfold. That’s where free will enters. Astrology is archetypally predictive, not concretely fated: it illuminates the score, while people still choose the melody.Richard Tarnas, PhD, is Professor Emeritus at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, where he was the founding director of the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness department. During his thirty years there he taught courses in the history of ideas, depth psychology, archetypal cosmology, cultural history, and the evolution of consciousness. He has also frequently lectured on archetypal studies and depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, and was formerly the director of programs and education at Esalen Institute in Big Sur. He is the author of The Passion of the Western Mind, a narrative history of the Western world view from the ancient Greek to the postmodern that is widely used in universities. His second book, Cosmos and Psyche, received the Book of the Year Prize from the Scientific and Medical Network. He is a past president of the International Transpersonal Association and was a long-time member of the Board of Governors for the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco.
