Learn How Technology Keeps Seniors Happy and Safe at Home

As a caregiver for his wife, David Walsh found purpose and meaning. As a business owner he’s carrying that purpose forward supporting seniors to live safely in their own homes. David’s wife Beatrice faced the end of her life with courage, and asked David to do the same as her caregiver. They had been partners for 30 years when Beatrice was told she had only four weeks to live during the Covid pandemic. While he acknowledged how difficult the caregiving was , David viewed his caregiving experience as an honor.   Recalling this grievous experience, David remembers what a joy it was to spend the last year of Beatrice’s life in her own home. It was one of Beatrice’s end of life wishes, and they were able to honor that. David understands how much support people need as they age. He also knows how valuable it is for older adults to age in their own space. His work reflects what he learned during his wife’s illness. Halo Care provides a safety net for older adults living alone. They believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live independently at home but when that time is getting more difficult, HaloCare provides additional help. Supported by innovative technology and passionate, caring people, HaloCare utilizes remote monitoring to empower people to live quality, independent lives in their own homes. Always respectful of dignity and privacy, there are no video cameras used in Halo Care’s systems and the technology is backed up by compassionate, real humans.  Connect with Halo Care at halocaregroup.com Learn about the support Halo Care offers to senior adults, those living with disabilities, and people who have just been discharged from the hospital here. 2. Back to Basics: What to Know About General Inpatient Care

Back to Basics: What to Know About General Inpatient Care

We're getting back to the basics of hospice care, taking a deep dive into hospice General Inpatient Care. Patients (and providers!) need to know the what/when/where of the GIP level of care inside hospice care. Here are some highlights of this episode: • General Inpatient Care is used for crisis symptom management that can't be done in the patient's home. • GIP is provided in a Medicare-certified facility (so there's 24/7 nursing care). • Medicare does not consider actively dying a crisis. • Every Medicare-certified hospice agency is required to furnish GIP care when it's needed. • Hospice team members (nurse, social worker, chaplain) continue to see the patient while they’re in GIP care. Documenting the Final Journey of Hospice Nurse Allyson

What happens when the hospice nurse who has long stood at the bedside of the dying becomes the patient herself? A Butterfly Has Been Released is a death-positive documentary film that follows Allyson from her terminal brain tumor diagnosis to her final breath—revealing courage, love, and the raw realities of letting go.  Filmmakers Jason Zamer and Barry Koch capture Allyson’s journey in an intimate way that bears witness to the reflections of Allyson, her family, and friends during her last 39 days.  They only spent 12 days filming with Allyson, but the experience impacted them deeply.  When you watch the film, you’ll feel the same.   Connect with Jason and Barry at TG Beyond: Website - tgbeyond.com Documentary rental, community screenings, and CE class available through a Partnership with Hospice Foundation of America on their website. 4. What You Need to Know About Meditative Heartbeat Therapy

    FEB 13

What You Need to Know About Meditative Heartbeat Therapy

Hospice chaplain and end of life doula Daniel DeLoma is devoted to the sacred task of helping others die well, with dignity, presence, and the steady rhythm of the heart as their guide. His work has purpose. From the very start of Daniel’s work in end of life care, he knew the importance of working with the dying. Daniel’s chaplain work made him realize that presence and prayer were not enough to meet the spiritual needs of his patients and caregivers. The development of meditative heartbeat therapy grew organically through his practice. The therapy connects people with their own heartbeat and is easily utilized by anyone. Using simple techniques, heartbeat therapy has a calming effect, reducing anxiety and pain perception. The therapy can be implemented to help patients fall asleep. Using a special stethoscope (like a Littman or Eko stethoscope) enables recording the heartbeat for playback for both the patient and the family. Hearing a loved one’s heartbeat can be a source of comfort after a death.     Connect with Chaplain Daniel DeLoma and Meditative Heartbeat Therapy: Website:https://www.heartbeattherapy.com/ Purchase a copy of Daniel’s book Meditative Heartbeat Therapy: A Contemplative Guide to Presence, Rhythm, and Care at End-of-Life here Find all of Barbara Karnes’ products and resources at bkbooks.com.
