    331: Situational Awareness at Night

Ten seconds after you walk out of a lit store into a dark parking lot, you can see less than at any other point in your day, and your eyes need twenty minutes or more to get back what those lights took. In this Day 12 episode of National Preparedness Month, I cover situational awareness at night, starting with the part almost nobody in preparedness talks about: how your eyes actually work in the dark. I walk through rods and cones, why staring straight at a dim shape makes it harder to see, and why deep red light protects the night vision that white light wipes out. I explain what changes when the sun goes down, from fewer people around to notice anything to the warning distance that shrinks to whatever the lights reach, and I get into what my years as a paramedic taught me about who comes out after dark. Then I cover the adjustments: resetting your baseline before you step outside, the cues that should raise your alert level, picking a route with light and foot traffic, parking for the walk back, phone and headphone discipline, parking lots and rideshares, what to do if you need to pull attention to yourself after the store door is locked, driving after dark and what NHTSA's 2023 pedestrian data shows, your own property, and a ten-second drill you can run tonight before you open the car door. It's practical prepping and survival thinking for the hours most content skips, whether you're a new prepper or you've been at this for years.
